I really don't speak French but for some reason I know the French for 'vagina'... and 'touch' O_o
I'm the driver of the Smart, and trust me; you could put any driver in the car and the stupid Mercedes traction control and tiptronic gearbox would cause the event to be just as boring. :)
i love the smart roadster , i've heard it is slow acceleration , is this true ? and also is that the brabus ? or the regular versoin ? P.S THAT LOOKED WELL FUN ! ;)
Hi! Mine wasn't the Brabus but it was tuned by Smarts'R'Us in Nottingham with a 35mm drop, Evil Twin remap, induction kit and Twin Exhaust. Was kickin out about 120bhp so more powerful than a Brabus.
If ur pulling off on a steep hill, the thing DOESN'T MOVE! :D
The mix of a slow tiptronic 'box and turbo lag on a 700cc engine means it just sits there revvin it's tiny nuts off! But then the turbo kicks in and u shoot off (usually just before a car's about to side-swipe you). Amazing fun though. :D
@redstarfish666 hey man! what mpg do u get? i have a roadster with similar setup, but red dot stage 2 remap. i get around 40 mpg at 70 mph motorway cruising. i think its not so good. also i get excessive oil use. my car hasn't covert too many miles and it has a new turbo too. the compression is also fine in all cylinder.
Hi, I no longer have the Smart. I used to get about 40mpg too. It used to keep up with much more powerful cars (on the right roads) and so if you compare the mpg figures to something like a 1.8 Astra Coupe that gets around 35mpg, it's not so bad.
Mine had no problems with oil but it went through 2 clutches in less than 30k miles. With a good gearbox, the Roadster would have been an outstanding car. Still the best car I've owned to this day.
@danandkaila no i have an accord wit a fully built h22 turbo at 22psi making over 450hp....low compression pistons, eagle rods, stage 3 clutch 2855lbs........stock weight
It really doesn't. Would be amazing if it did! Smart made a couple of prototype twin-engined Roadster Coupe's (which looked a lot like mine) and they had just over 200bhp. They were never sold though. The commercially available Brabus only had around 120bhp. Still good fun in such a light car though.
@supercrossmatt13 I've toyed with that idea. Something I might do in a couple of years and then keep it as a toy. Would have to get rid of the stupid gearbox though. It's far too slow and clunky for a Gixxer lump.
no the smart roadster and roadster coupe as well as the first gen for2 are all very small gasoline turbo engine. The new gen for2 went to a larger NA gasoline engine from mitsubishi
It's mid-engine RWD, hence why I thought it would be fun in the snow. However, the Mercedes safety devices are really intrusive and stop you enjoying it so much.
Only now do I know (now I've sold the car) that there are tricks you can use to disable them.
The video was done with the ESP 'switched off', but not fully disabled. The only method I know about is the paper clip bent to join two pins of the ECU connecter socket in the drivers' footwell.
No idea which two to join but there's bound to be info online somewhere.
Get it turned off and have some fun. If you video it, put a link as a comment on this video. Would be cool to see it. Still love the Smart Roadsters. :)
i have the same car(soft-top),same colour but i painted that the colour of ferrari because red of mercedes sucks...yours is very goodlooking though...let me believe that it's not possible to have 120 hp on your wheels...what says the dynamometer??
if that is really full power, then that car must have a REALLY intrusive traction control system. coming from mercedes, i wouldnt doubt they packed the smart roadster choc full of merc safety assists.
The traction control was 'turned off'. I don't know why they give you the option to turn it off if it's just going to stay in the background anyway. I really did have my foot to the floor at times but it just made the traction control kick in even more. Still had fun though. :)
very nice looking car guys but you gotta kick it more sideways like i do its alot of fun when you get a good long drift going but nice video insightful and pretty cool looking car if i may say so looks better then the little smart cars
I'm afraid Smart Gmbh have stopped making the Roadster now mate.
The last one was made last year and now they've sold the design rights to some independent company who keep promising to bring it back under the AC badge. They're calling it Project Kimber but it's been quiet for far too long.
The reason Smart stopped producing them was due to a lack of sales (too expensive).
It was never released in America due to the US having stricter safety laws.
i really like the smart roadtser and thought about buying a brabus fpr me. But the gearbox is the fucking lamest thing on earth so i took a bmw roadster :)
Erm, if you actually look at the title screen at the start of the video, you will realise that it does say smart roadster coupe, and that is exactly what it is... i think the owner would know :p
they didn't say it sucks. they said the only thing wrong with it is the gearbox is laggy. and it would only suck if your trying to go fast, cause this car doesn't achieve that very well
They are very light (700kg), have a tiny engine (700cc) with a massive turbo and are stupidly fun to drive. They handle just like a go-kart! They have removable body panels (the red bits on my car) so you can change the colour of your Smart. The best thing about smarts is that you get the buzz of going fast without having to risk your life!
My last car was a 3litre twin turbo Supra- Very quick but nowhere near as much fun to drive as the Smart.
see when you say massive turbo.... it's tiny :-) And they weigh nearer 800kg but who's counting lol looks like you were having fun there. Had you disabled all the esp properly? (the cheat way with the paperclip?) ;-)
:) I had no idea you could use a paperclip to disable the esp. It would have made things a lot more fun. My Roadster had a much bigger turbo fitted. It filled the one side of the engine bay completely. I sold it not too long ago and have now moved on to Jap performance. Still crave the Smart though. :)
my fun has had one of these Smart Roadster in Australia for the past 3years. and even now she still says its the best car she has ever owned (the most expensive being a new BMW M3 back in 2001)
700cc + 6 seqential gears + 700kg = feels like your birthday every time you get a red light, coz taking off again never stops being fun ^^
i have the 42, practicaly the same, engine in the back, 700kg, just the abense of boot & bonnet, gotta love the french... sometimes ;)
Yeah I know. the damn thing kept changing gear as I'd get into a drift. If only it had a real gearbox rather than a manual. Plus, even though the traction control was turned off, the ABS kept kicking in and stopping it from sliding. Very hard. Also, there are a lot of fences, trees, kerbs and a massive resevoir around the edges and I didn't fancy killing my car.

There's a button to switch the traction control off but Mercedes made sure it still stays on for safety (just not as much). :/
And you don't have to worry about removing the comment. :D
I just felt like responding to a comment the way most people do. ^_^
