Well, IMO, many US American academicians fall into that above mentioned category of American liberal extremism. Then again, they could have just liked Germany and saw no pressing reason to return. I regret moving back to the USA so soon not because I think its terrible here, but I enjoyed living in Italy so damn much! Also, its not like the situation magically changed once Obama was elected or sworn in. Its still bad
But I agree and as I often crassly put it: there are assholes everywhere.
American extreme liberalism would equal center-left positions in Europe, so your Academics are more European than most other Americans...maybe that's why they like it here.
Of course the states did not change overnight with a change of the president, but I think that you're on a better way now.
Aren't there places like Italy in the US? I thought you had almost everything (seriously). One of your states even has an italian language state motto (MA?)....
I doubt there's any place like Italy in the USA, culturally or historically. I believe most immigrants come from the south of Italy. I lived in the North and perferred it much more, there.
That being said, I could live pretty much anywhere. Being a military brat has forced me to adapt to a new environment every 3 - 6 years.
Not sure about the state motto of MA, but its nothing Google wouldn't solve.

So I'm sure you know that Americans have shortcomings, too - like every other country. Just let me clarify that I really like the USA, and - although it's hard to admit - the world would probably be a worse place without them.

My friend in Bad Endorf told me a story about an American ex-pat who left the USA because she hated it and moved to Germany and loved it and the lifestyle. He then asked if I was so frustrated with my country, why didn't I leave for someplace I enjoyed living more, like Italy. I responded, "What kind of America would we have if all the good Americans left?"
Its frustrating, but I love my country. You have to try and fight the good fight for yourself and everybody! Same for any other country.
If that's what you think, it's very noble. But didn't a lot of good Americans leave when Bush was elected? I don't mean to become political now, but if there are only a few good people in a sea of ignorants, they might fit in better elsewhere. But I understand you - we have a problem in the German army that most of them are right-extreme, because almost anyone non-militaristic goes for the civilian way of conscription, as did I back then. But people with your attitude are sure more responsible.
