One of the unsung guitar/musical geniuses ... The first time I heard Lenny Breau was his recording of 5 O'clock Bells. Every jazz guitarist knows of Lenny Breau.
LIes all Lies lenny breau is promoted a lot listen professional muscisians talk about that dude. Is it paid off cant trust it to that point smoke a joint
@JypesRypeSnipes I think people mean he wasn't promoted when he was alive. Besides since when does a professional musician talking about the dude mean he's being promoted? Promotion comes from a record label. That's how it works, or didn't you get that far in school?
For someone who "had everything going for him" in the guitar world
It is a shame and a crime that no one took him under their wing and
promoted him. Tal Farlow tried to help, but it takes someone with the
music connections in the business. I often wonder what would have happened if his life had not been cut short. There are many incredible musicians that because of the lack of support for their art, have given up, never to rise to the heights they deserve. I know one.
i am a guitar fanatic, my fave is rhoads, van halen, george lynch, tony mcalpine, vinnie moore, yngwie, but to this day, after i heard lenny, he blew my mind, being a musician i appreciate the talent this guy had, and nobody has come close to what he did on the guitar, and never will, a genius
@vanhalen515084 that is my exact scenario too. Had I known Lenny was around back in the day, I would've taken a different path musically speaking. But you're probably like me, any guitar vrtuosity is appreciated. I'm glad you've now met Lenny. Now go buy John Knowels book he wrote on Lenny style. It's an awesome introduction to Lenny style.
@Juriswindow I think it's great when rockers end up playing jazz....It says a great deal about the genre. You hear rockers and it's fans belittling jazz at times, out of pure ignorance...So when their rock royalty demonstrate what they really dig; how much they respect the jazz pioneers, in their heart of hearts...it makes for a powerful response. Andy must have a sensitive ear to have loved Lenny as much as he did. I kinda dig his album of Monk tunes.
@softandgroovy Keith Richards refers to Rock and Roll as just being "jazz with a strong back-beat." Randy Bachman (who was fanatical for Lenny Breau) wrote all of his songs as jazz and then 'translated' them into rock songs. When you listen closely, you can hear the influence.
Fact: Pardon me, if posted already...a funny story.... Lenny moved to Winnipeg when he was young. Every day, Randy Bachman went to school in the morning, then at lunch went straight to Lenny's house and took guitar lessons - for TWO YEARS. Randy has been a champion of Lenny for years. "Boy Wonder" is a great CD of Lenny's music, put out by Randy and it helps the Breau family financially.
just watch him, what a touch, he is just flowing, he knew how to mix stuff together, different styles, i didn't think there was a player this good from canada, simply amazing, thats all i can say
I'm a Lenny Breau fanatic, I'm in love with the guy, I started a therapy group for people like me...... Lenny was so hot...I'd be equally honoured if you joined the group and shared some of your personal feelings on Lenny for those who are equally warped and deranged.
just the greatest guitar player ever. had couple of his albums in the seventies but they're gone like him. thanks for these posts so others can find out about this genius that left for other places a little too soon for me
well andy summers doesn't really live in the rock world.....he's quite the jazz player himself and his stuff with the police is wonderful no doubt but not quite representative of his style as a guitarist
I never knew Lenny Breau.I heard him today , boy could he play! Excellent video and Id like to thank Canada for some of the greatest song writers who ever lived .
Listen to Cohen .. "a mess" ... I am going to say he's either referring to his personal life off camera, or Cohen's jealous. A mess? He was fantastic!!!!!
Its a commonly used expression, not derogatory in nature. It simply means he was "something else" or it can be used to suggest he was a silly guy. Nothing bad
yes but it is a term of endearment, particularly in the south and midwest USA. To say someone is a mess, to is to say they are incorigable or a scamp, or unpredictable. Basically, interesting all the time.
Yeah, Lenny was a mess a lot of the time due to drug abuse. That stuff is gone into throughout the documentary. He was an original voice of great accomplishment on the guitar and music in general. His drug problem was nothing original. Except the escape from pain, the journey into deeper realms, alienation, etc. all play a part in why drugs show up in art.
Emotionally he was a mess; he didnt have the best hand of cards dealt to him. As musician hes in the upper echelon. His personal life is totally tragic. He suffered like Vincent Van Gogh.
Hey guys! I just discovered Lenny Breau! What a megnificient musician! He sounds like a perfect mix of Charlie Christian, Charlie Byrd and Eddie Lang!
his biggest influences were Chet Atkins, Bill Evans, Tal Farlow and Carlos Montoya, he invented things no one else had thought of basically he played a piano music on guitar.
Right. Real good music never sells, especially these days. It goes over the kids heads. They just want to see someone who is quirky to look at and is sleeping with the current flavor of the month movie star. That's what sells. Most people don't know what actually makes good music.
@m9mdc underrated is the most overrated word! he is known far and wide as a brilliant guitarist, has been for some time ! maybe not in your cabin but every where else!
I met Lenny once when I was about five or six back in like 72 or 73. I remember it was just he and I in the living room and I gave him a piece of gum. I remember he did not chew it long and he said I can't chew gum for very long an dhe spit it out. My father was his first teacher that played in Lenny's fathers band. Lone Pine and Betty Cody.
every so often you get an artist who seems to be able to take an art form into another dimension, breau was such a person, his command of the guitar. choice of notes and melody, connected to musicians and non musicians, in a way that very few musicians have ever been able to do. I think thats why lenny breau is held in such high regard.
He obviously could make ANY guitar sound like that. His daughter says he was not successful, but he certainly was successful at being the best player around. That is real success.
You masterminds have obviously concluded that it is impossible to enjoy and appreciate Parker and Breau, BOTH masters in their own right. Happy hating=-).
Ever heard of Charlie Parker? Do you even know what bebop is? To say it's not memorable or singable is just ludicrous. Lenny had a lot of bebop in his playing, as well as just about every other type of music... 0:41 to 0:43 is a prime example of a bebop cliche. Pretty memorable to my ears...
Lenny will remain one of the rarest guitar players ever on the planet.....
