  • I once rented a car somewhere in the Amsterdam canal zone. My friend, that brought me there on his bike, was back half an hour earlier than I, over a distance of 5 kilometers. And then you ask why so many people ride a bike there???

  • At first I was really surprised seeing the comments on this movie. Everybody is so thrilled about riding bikes to work etc. For me, as a dutchman it's the most common thing there is. I ride my bike every day, to school, downtown, friends, family. Would go mental if I had to sit in a car everyday. Must admit that Holland is very bike-friendly having special strips on EVERY street except highways etc. Only problem is that you're breathing that dirty exhaust from them filthy cars when biking :(

  • traffic is annoying for real.

  • @Matt2779 Holland are the provinces of the Netherlands Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland combined

Holland literally translated is cone-caved-Land :P

And both those province would be flooded with water if the dikes would be breached.

  • Dutch or from holland? Actually its Denmark not Holland.

  • @Matt2779 Denmark???

  • Love the video, nice thought, but....I've been stuck on the 405 living in Long Beach and working in L.A. To make this work....one has to create bike lanes and not those narrow one feet wide so called bike lanes, with cars flying by going 50+ miles. I would love to ride my bike to work, but I also want to arrive alive there and back!

  • i want live there.....

  • awesome!

  • all praises to the world's greatest machine : the bicycle

  • Kankerduiven o.0

    great trailer btw

  • 10% of all bikes in Amsterdam are stranded in the water xD (grachten hea :P)

  • Sorry, I meant all of SF to be like Amsterdam! =)

  • Great trailer! I started biking when I move to SF. Besides taking the company bus to work, everything else is done on a bike. I wish all of SF is not Amsterdam!

  • fuck the dutch :)

  • is it me or are all those bikes fixed gears? I couldn't survive the hills here in the west of England...

  • @paudjinn Some have fixed gears some don't. It kinda depends on where you live and how rich you are. Poor students for example can't afford expensive bikes. People who live in larger cities don't want to buy expensive bikes because they're likely to be stolen (I know double lock my €50,- bycicle)

  • I cycle everyday! It sucks when it's cold and snowy but when it's good weather i love it!

  • do not even try to classify this as a film

    just some guy bored

  • Heh, for me its pretty normal. It only sucks hard when its bad weather.. which is alot :P

  • Positive!

  • MichaelWBauch I would love to see your Film, Is there anyway to see your Film in Holland? (I'm dying to see your views on the society I was born and raised in).

  • Love the concept. But good luck getting from Venice to Downtown on a bike. Amsterdam is half the size of LA. The problem with LA is it's incredibly spread out. It's a city built for the automobile, unfortunately.

  • @abo46n2 Amsterdam is also amazing big which takes to long to bycicle from nort to south, but almost everyone uses the train or bus instead of the car.

  • did you guys know that there are more bikes in the netherlands than there are people?

  • I just spent about a week in Amsterdam and the bicycle way of life there is a beautiful beautiful thing.

JamesBondSV, I feel you dude... me too... meee toooo...

  • my bike got stolen today and i watched this and started crying....it's true how much you can get attached to your bike. I miss mine so much :(

  • yea. we rule.

    dutch ftw.

  • Have a Dutch friend who said to me "it only takes ten minutes to ride into town" and I was pretty amazed. I haven't rode a bike in years. I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that the Netherlands is flat and they have designed the cities in a way that allows people to ride bicycles more, this isn't the case here in Australia where cities are sprawled out and busy roads are the arteries of the city.

  • wish i lived there! we sould be more the that in UK!

  • what a great film. i love amsterdam

  • superb. I wish I live there :D

  • When will this be playing again??? I just spent 2 weeks in the Netherlands and it completely renewed my love for biking! I plan on moving there as soon as I can. Needless to say, I really want to see this movie!

  • I cant wait to be living in Amsterdam for collage :)))

  • it's a date: june 10th / 7pm / art theater / long beach / california / usa

    (come meet wallstreet bob)

  • Haha, it still amazes me how such a normal thing as riding a bike to school, work, stores etc. is such a big deal to foreigners. But that's probably 'cause I'm a Dutchie myelf ;)

It still is the easiest, environmental friendliest, parking-hassle-free, most fun, healthiest way of getting around. Sucks when it rains though ;)

Oh, and I hear they have lots of bikes in the far east as well (China, India). It may be time to do a sequel :D

  • Whens the movie out?

That looks like heaven, lets get rid of car culture, bike riding is so much better!

  • sucks to bike in bad weather .. and I doubt Holland has the best weather year round.. except maybe in the summer.

  • @mobspeak The Dutch are hardy sorts, they just accept the cold and dress to suit the weather, its a bit like their approach to pain, they accept it mostly and don't medicate all the time.

  • That's part of the reason why people in the Netherlands are like 3 times less obese than people in the USA according to OECD Health Data 2005.

  • Haha, I am actually writing my bachelors thesis on the popularity of bikes in the netherlands.. this video was useful procastination, thank you!

  • Wow beautiful video!!! I'm from the Netherlands but moved to the US... and I definitely miss this! Such a great movie, gives me goose bumps! Thanks for creating this!

  • Nice ,i'm a Dutchie and it's true.

We have all kind of bikes .You should see the differences between .

Ofcourse it is sportif , but for more lazy people there are bikes where you can lay down.Or with little and quiet motorcycle wich you can put on or off and all you wish.

It's the perfect way for transportation in a city or enjoy the nature.

    Anyway nice article

    Grtz

  • Excellent film, thanks for posting.

  • Am a foreigner that having priviledge to bike in Holland too as part of daily routine (if weather allows). biking is truly a good quality of life. Something that many countries should adopt from Dutch. Also to be environmental conscious too! Agree that one should be more proud of their bike instead of the car. Now i love my bike more than my car in home country. Very much appreciate this biking culture of Dutch people. One should not feel shy to ride on the bicycle even if wearing business suit.

  • This made me cry a little.

Tears of happiness and joy :)

  • Thanks for viewing my movie. I am glad you enjoyed it. It still makes me cry sometimes too!

  • Looks like heaven to me. If you can't bicycle commute, at least keep a bicycle at your office and use it for local trips during the day.

  • Thanks for viewing my film. It is like a slice of heaven there. Yes, you are right about keeping a bike at the office if possible. Keep in mind that most urban trips in the US are two miles or less - easy biking distance for most people

  • Lived in the Netherlands for 2 years rode a bike every day I was there and loved it.

I try to bike as much as possible but it is hard now in AZ during the summer to choose a bike over a A/C car.

  • Thanks for viewing my film. I'm glad you got a chance to experience biking in the Netherlands for 2 years. The more people on bikes in the US the better.

    All the Best,

    Mike

  • Been riding my Bike to work for 15 months w/no car. Sold my motorcycle 6 months ago, didn't need that either. I have a car share account I've only used once in 15 months. You really don't need a car. Try it.

  • Thanks for viewing my film. I am glad that you are enjoying your bike as transportation too. I've been using mine for local trips for years too. Keep it up!

  • I don't know what's wrong with that other Zane. I've been living in SoCal with a bike and no car for 15 years on and off. It's flat and the weather is awesome. If we got rid of all the cars, it'd be safe, pleasant, and breathable too! A guy can dream!

  • Thanks for your input. We need more bike riders like you on the road. Thanks for taking the time to view my movie.

  • here in LA people drive 40 miles to go shopping to save $2 on a shirt thats on sale !!

  • I appreciate the comment, but this is no joke. People tell me all the time that distances are so big here in the US compared to Holland and Europe. This in nothing new. The fact is that 40% of all car trips are 2 miles or less in the US and most people don't realize this. Here is where anyone can ditch the car for the bike. You don't have to be Lance Armstrong to ride 2 miles.

Mike - Director of "Riding Bikes with the Dutch"

  • This is a joke!! They're comparing apples to oranges. L.A. County and San Diego County are both twice as large as the whole country of Holland, and Southern California is nearly 30 times larger than Holland!!! There is no comparison!

  • Of course Amsterdam and LA are different. But 2 miles is still 2 miles, no matter where you are. That 40% of all car trips are 2 miles or less seems pretty pathetic (East Coaster here...we walk in our cities). Also, doesn't LA have the self-proclaimed best weather in the world, while it rains more days than not in Amsterdam? Apples and oranges, indeed.

  • A American minister said that "Bicycles are not a way of transportation" i wish you all the luck :)
