@psyfertech ... no he would not have made it - in the slow motion (@.42) you can see the trestle move b/c the truck hit it, too. The trestle had to be inspected after this. The crash beam is exactly 11 feet and 10.8 inches above the crest of the road, so well over 2 inches to spare over the posted clearance. A crash like this could nudge the tracks out of alignment and shut down a busy track. Or cause a disaster ...
Here in the UK you'll get crucified if you hit a railway bridge with a truck. a lot of the bridges are victorian structures that will need major safety inspections following a collision, the railway line will have to be shut, and you'll be up in court and looking at very, very heavy fine and costs.
Maybe the city ought to ban trucks from using that road.Build a bypass or make trucks use an alternate route. If that many trucks are really hitting this bridge one would think someone on the city planning commission or roads and highway works would go Hmmm this isnt working out, maybe we should do something about it.Putting in a crash bar isnt going to help if you have drivers incapable of seeing height limit signs and flashing warning lights.
Amazing! So how many trucks have hit the bridge before they either raise the it or lower the road? Maybe somebody have to die. I really hope this gets fixed before the worse happens.
there is a reason that everybody hits that fucking bridge. they could hang chains about 1/8 mile before the bridge vehicles that would hit the bridge will hit the chains first.
its ten times funnier now that i see its really easy to avoid going under the bridge, if any of these trucks made a left before the bridge and then a quick right they would be across the tracks with no problem
@BananaJSSI what a hit, thats like one of those MacNutt trucks we have on SSI, these videos are crazy and funny all at the same time. The hay trucks are good, as well as Two Men, a Truck, and a Bridge video.
They should add a traffic camera that's triggered by impact alone! At least that way they could capture some of the idiots that just drive on like nothing happened!
After watching all these crashes you would have though someone i.e. the railroad company or even local government would do something other than build a huge metal truck killer.
Chains before you get to the bridge or even going one step further and lowering the road rather than constantly risking the bridge.
My solution: Install a camera that captures the license plates of the offenders. Then charge those who leave with failing to remain at the scene of a crash. In Alberta the fine for that is around $2,000.
They should build trucks so the top of the driver's cabin is at the same height as the rest of the vehicle. After the first few dozen decapitations, maybe drivers would be a little more attentive to those signs.
what is that truck carrying? it looks like a large garbage compactor. whatever it is it sure is heavy to bend that i-beam. did the driver eventually stop?
When truck drivers disregard the signs and lights and hit the beam, are you aware if they are issued citations or charged the clean up costs? Do they ever turn to you for copies of tape to help find the truckers? Or do you get o stay out of it?
@dyanthis - I asked a cop and he said that they don't usually issue a citation if there is no property damage other than the truck itself.. The Police asked me for recordings of a car break in and an accident, but not so far of any truck crashes. Only when Big John has to come and get the truck out from under the trestle do the drivers get charged with cleanup cost. Getting a truck pulled out and towed can cost well over $1,000.
I love the person crossing the street. The truck hits the beam and he/she flinches and then keeps walking like it happens all the time! Which it does.
hope they find out who it was and send them the bill for the damage to fix the crash barrier and the cost for the crews to check on the bridge not to mention the thousands of dollars in late fees for the trains
That's likely going to be the THIRD beam replaced at the same location. Signs would go but the common sense logic is out of the window... no one pays attention to signs.
BTW - all that debris flying around did not come from that truck. That was debris that had collected on top of the crash beam from previous crashes. This crash just knocked it all down!
From a structural engineering perspective that is very serious, they probably had to close the line to trains while it was inspected. You can see the whole bridge wobble up and down from the impact.
They should install a frame 20 or 30 feet from the bridge with chains hanging down at the height of the bride, seems to work well in other places.
@nucleochemist If the driver just kept on going after hitting the beam and the bridge itself, I don't think that some hanging chains would stop him anytime soon.
maybe they could do a little digging & make it 12' even & there would be "LESS" crashes

Neat if you had a high speed HD camera. Once you regular camera detects the yellow flashing lights, HD mode gets ready for action.

Slo-mo clearly shows the bridge flexing when it was hit. Given its age and history of allisions, it may be compromised.
