@MrKickyourbutt hahaha i love that pronunciation. when i listened to this as a toddler (and had no idea what apartheid is) i just assumed it was apart-tights and that everybody in the crowd really liked them.
are ranked with your band as #22 all time by Rolling Stone, #24 best guitarist of all time, have 8 songs in The Top 500 All Time, have a record ranked #26 All Time, sold 150 million records, are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and done everything else that U2 has done! BAM!
All you Edge critics, go away and come back when you've won 22 Grammys, 8 BRIT Awards, 6 MTV Video Music Awards, 10 Q Awards, 12 Pollstar Awards, 3 Juno Awards, a Billboard Music Award, an American Music Award, 15 Meteor Ireland Music Awards, 3 NME Awards, a Las Vegas Film Critics Society award, a Golden Globe, 2 People's Choice Awards, 2 World Music Awards... (cont. on next post)
@mattblack196 Just to clarify, when Bono tells Edge to "play the blues" he's not confusing his technical musical genres (e.g., "Edge, please play the pentatonic minor scale in increments of 8-bars"); since the song is about people who's lives were a living hell under apartheid, he's using it a lot more like the phrase "sing the blues" (only asking The Edge to do so with his guitar).
Music is not supposed to be hard god dammit, all guitarist have their own style, The Edge loves experimenting with diffrent sounds and he have gotten far by that like yngwie malmsteen has came far by playing lots of arpeggios and scales fast. Music is supposed to be fun its not a contest.
Haha he cant play blues?? That was cool but the edge has the playing skill of a 6 year old..the fact that he hasnt changed or grown as a musician in all this time is crazy, he's an embarrassment
Then why was THE Edge selected to be on the documentary, "It Might Get Loud" with the Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds' guitarist, Jimmy Page?!
THE Edge has grown over the period of 33 years or so, it's a different technique that portrays a sound differently than usual guitarists. Jack White, you could say sounds nasty but that's another version of the Blues.
@cookmoore ya it is cz jack white plays blues scales!! this is something totally differet although maybe its bonos fault for the confusion...i like this, i think it sounds good but from a technical standpoint its sooooo basic, its just tracked with tonns of delay and reverb witch is a cheap trick to make everything sound epic, he takes adventage of the fact that most people havent a clue how the music is created..thats all
I think people get a bit hooked up on 'who's the best?'. He doesn't want to be the best he wants to make good music, and I think this solo and him are great for that reason, they sound good, and expressive.
play the blues? =P I honestly dont think david evans could play a good blues solo/ guitar solo to save his life....if he can, i have yet to see it anyway
OK, just to clear things up, Edge was not playing the blues. It sounded nothing like the blues and if anyone starts arguing, he or she doesn't know anything about the blues.
I think his "fuck the revolution" speech in Boston was more inspiring. It took a lot of balls for an Irishman to publicly tell the IRA and their US sponsers to go fuck themselves at that point in history.
Hey tony, you are one of those ignorant fools who knows nothing about guitar and believe a guitarist can only be great if he shreds, you have no taste for originality,a solo doesnt have to be random notes thrown together, which isnt even a solo, its just noise,a solo can be anything as long as its played with emotion, meaning, and personality,I despise U2but i think the edge is truly a guitar genius (P.S. i dont think shredding is noise, only when done without emotion, but people like you ruin music)
actually I don't know why you think I listen to shred guitar, it's probably because you're a complete moron my comments had nothing to do with shredding just as edge's solo had nothing to do with the blues. I listen to the blues, classic rock and jazz, none of which have anything to do with shredding, now that that's out of the way, I think the edge is a terrible guitarist, that lacks technical skill, phrasing, and just to shut you up - emotion.
Ya you see, one thing i hate is when people say a guitarist lacks emotion, that doesnt make any sense, EVERY guitarist uses emotion, it is literally impossible to not put emotion into playing, what people MEAN to say when they say that is that the guitarist doesnt try to be different than everyone, which in this case is completely idiotic, since the edge is one of the most origional out there, but hey your entitled to your opinion
Your comment, sevenbb7, doesn't actually make sense. It is completely possible for a guitarist to lack emotion in their playing. Of course, every human FEELS EMOTION, but it does not follow that every guitarist is able to TRANSLATE this emotion into their playing. What you're suggesting is that any 12-year-old who picks up a guitar for the first time is able to play with just as much emotion as Jimi Hendrix. That's absurd. I found The Edge's 'solo' bland and emotionless, but to each their own!
Hmmm......How could U2 possibly be considered one of the greatest rock bands ever with a terrible guitarist. Just doesn't make sense to me. and this solo wasn't supposed to be bluesy, Bono just said it because they were talking about something sad. And no terrible guitarist is going to be making what the Edge makes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To you ignorant U2 "fans:" please don't post any more comments because you obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about. The Edge didn't play "the blues" and the bass part is mediocre at best. The guitar solo was poor and the world can do without Bono's pretentious, self-righteous garbage.
the edge is possibly the most underappreciated guitarists in the world. Hes as good as slash, but of course no one pays attention to him cause hes not in guitar hero. People today dont know any of the real rock legends. Keith richards, Angus Young, Edge, George Harrison, Joe Perry, etc etc etc.
Nobody pays attention to him because he's nothing more than a rhythm guitarist. I am yet to see him play anything decent. Does he not believe in bends, vibrato or anything without a tonne of delay and reverb?
I happen to think "bends and vibrato" and all that stuff sound corny, campy, mock-fake-emotional, and just about anything else bad you could throw in, and would only distract from the song here. I can do alot of that stuff, prolly more than edge, but he does a little of it on some demos from their early years. Never on a recording, thank god. But I think it would be ridiculus in almost any U2 song. He's a musician, not a face-maker finger-wiggler.
I've never heard him play anything APPROACHING the complexity of Slash, and even SLASH isn't a particularly great guitarist. Where on earth did you get the idea he's 'as good as Slash'? I'm not being harsh - I'm honestly intrigued.
He's better than Slash because his music sounds good, and Slash's sounds crappy. It has nothing to do with wiggling fingers fast, or complexity. And if he uses technology, so what? Sounds good, bottom line.
Look, part of what makes a good guitarist is how it sounds. These are instruments, remember that. Slash is better in some respects, he's more dramatic player. Edge has a much different vibe, its more fluttering-ambient. Not as a dramatic. I prefer The Edge.
not the bottom line, anyone who vaguely knows their way round a fretboard could play his fucking shit solos drenched in effects, their just so boring. real guitarists rely on their skills of playing with little to no effects and have done for years and years, could edge do that ? no fucking way
what u are failing to understand is - OF COURSE anyone can play this, its very simple. But could you creat it from scratch. NOT A CHANCE BRO!!! That is what makes edge so great - he can hear what sounds good...create it....add effects to it (because he knows more about effects than anyone) and then make people fall in love with it. I hate how everyone keeps shitting on Edge's skills - he doesn't need to be the greatest guitarist of all time to be considered one of the greats.
he should drop the title "lead guitarist" (and he's pathetiic name actually) and just play fucking keyboard because thats what hes bollocks solos sound like. Oh and yes I can create an "edge solo" with a drenching bit of chorus and three notes played in an embarassing low-key way.
" Yep, silver and gold... This song was written in a hotel room in New York city 'round about the time a friend or ours, little Steven, was puting together a record of artists against apartheid. This is a song written about a man in a shanty town outside of Johannesburg. A man who's sick of looking down the barrel of white South Africa. A man who is at the point where he is ready to take up arms against his oppressor.
A man who has lost faith in the peacemakers of the west while they argue and while they fail to support a man like bishop Tutu and his request for economic sanctions against South Africa.
Hey asshole, his band donates a shitload of their own money to different charities on a annual basis. He's not like some of these dumb fucking rappers or rock stars showing off his houses and cars and their jewelery on MTV cribs or other entertainment shows...in fact he keeps his family life private.
