This is brilliant! I was looking for a similar solution. I have a Zoom H4n and a pair of Golden Age R1 Active ribbon mics. If I plug them into the H4n directly, I have to raise the recording level up to 70 and that makes for significant hiss. I was wondering if using the FMR RNP as a preamp between the ribbons and the H4n would lower the noise floor. I noticed that you have kept the H4n input level at 10 and that must have made a big difference.
@biopter I don´t think that using the FMR RNP will lower the noisefloor significally. The GA R1 Active is pretty Sensitivy (-42 dB) for a ribbonmic and the Seltnoise (< 18 dB) is not to bad, but the RNP will still have to be cranked pretty hard, so it will also hiss. The RNP will give a better soundquality though, seperat PSU, isolation from digital signals, better made preamp and so on. Some noise reduction will be needed.
I use some post recording noise reducing (20-25 db). I start by making a noice profile, wich is a recording with exactly the same recording ajustments, as the original recording, but without any signal = a recording of the noise only. When noise is isolated it can be extraced from the original recording. Checkout Your audio software helpfiles.
My soundclip "Small Forreststream" is recorded without the RNP preamp. The NT 1A´s direct into Zoom H4n input level 80, and the noise reduction as above.
@TheSoundclip This recording is also very clean. I don't know if it's the source, but it does sound a bit thinner to me, compared to "Morning at the beach".
@biopter You´r right the Small Forreststream sounds thinner than Morning at the beach. I can´t pinpoint exactly why, i have used the same setting for HighPassFilter, which is the only thing done too the raw take, exept the Noise Reduction. The sound from the stream itself hasn´t as much low frequensy energy, as the sound from the wave action has, so that could explain it . . . . . But the birds also sounds fuller and rithcer at the M a b I think it is because the RNP, but i can´t prove it.
I've got the NT2-A, if I get the RNP, will it hiss if I crank it? Does it give enough headroom in the mix? Using an old Emu 1820, and these preamps don't give enough gain without distortion. I either get low output or distortion.
You can get the RNP to hiss when u crank it a lot. You can get preamps with better S/N ratio than RNP, but owerall soundquality is good/exellent. I use the RNP because of its portability.
@TheSoundclip I'm very interested in this-- what kind of 12 volt battery pack were you using? Sounds like you've got a great field recording rig! I'm interested in it. I'd like to get into field recording as well and the H4n seems like a nice alternative to the FR2LE (fostex). I appreciate it!
@morrissteven Batterypack is just a standard batterypack of 10 pcs AA NiMh cells. If You have the FOSTEX FR-2 LE recorder, then start by using that, it has all You need to get going, exept some sensitive mics. My rig is OK and the NT-1a´s are sensitive, high output and very low noise, but not too easy to use in the field, the sound quallity though, is not to be beaten.
May i know, how do u denoise? i was recording some stuffs such as acoustic guitar at my own home, i was hearing zero noise. but when i recorded and play it back after mastering and all kind of stuff i can hear LOUD white noise. whereas u are recording the nature with no such thing as room treatment but in this recording u have zero white noise. i would really appreciate if u can help me solve my noise problem. it has been bugging me more than 2 years and i cant solve it
@TJmusical Have the same problem. Condenser mics pick up EVERYTHING... including the sound of your computer's fans whirring in the background. My Dell is too loud to record in the same room as a mic.
@seanmuse i recommend the TheSoundclip to assist you, he has been a great help for me. i always contacted him if i came across unsolvable recording issue =) kudos to the SoudClip

I just bought this mic yesterday, It's awesome! Now I can use this track to go to the beach anytime! haha

How did you get 48 volt phantom power to the beach?
linuxguy2009 2 years ago
Easy ;-)
The mic preamp RNP (Really Nice Preamp by FMR Audio) supply the phantom power. RNP is battery operated (12 volt batterypack).
