It depends on the power source, if it was plutonium 238 its not so bad. That gives off alpha radiation that does not even penetrate a piece of paper. That same stuff was used in some deep space probes, it generates considerable heat.
Only when ingested it becomes a hazzard, it settles in your bones and screws up the body.
@kvni1965 You ought to be proud of him, too! I'm a Submarine Sailor myself, and we don't talk about many ships nearly as much as the Nautilus - both the sip and her crew are famous! Hooyah!
my grandfather was the cheif of the boat on the nautilus at one point :O he was one of the three men with the key to "The Button" and you needed all three to unlock it
@LostandFound03 if by "The Button" you mean the missile launch system, you got the wrong boat, SSN- 571 wasn't fitted to carry missiles or rockets, her only weapons were the 6 torpedo tubes in her bow, after all Nautilus was only a transitional technology, breaching the barrier between diesel boats and modern subs.
Even though it's a nuclear submarine, doesn't mean it's radioactive. The reactors have been shut down since it was decommed. Even if it was still running the reactors don't put out enough radioactivity to harm anything.
I don't like how everything is behind glass. It makes it feel too much like a damn museum. When i toured the Blue Black. it was all open, We could sit in the the "pilot's" chairs, look through the parascope, sit at the galley. Lay on the bunks, etc. Go where ever we wanted (just don't touch anything, because it was still a submarine, and likewise still works lol)
Wow, for me this is amazing. Back in the 70s, as a kid, I read about her famous voyage. I even put together a scale model of this boat. I'm not mistaken, her sister ship was the USS Seawolf (?) which had a similar body style but the sail/conning tower looked like a chunk of it was missing, by design..
my grandfather was part of the first crew on this boat

As far as submarine history goes, I'm beginning to think that even the turtle had that white tile on its decking. probably still had to wax it too.

@cutdeamon Nautilus SSN 571 wasn't in WW2, it wasn't built until 1954, but there were a couple boats before her called Nautilus

@BlakeKilbourne you are a submarine sailor and you called the Nautilus a ship? Everyone knows that Submarines are boats.

@Robkat3751 Granted... I'm also a nub.

There are parts of the Nautilus that are still hot.
cochranexyz 2 years ago 3
still hot as in radio active? Or still hot as in still functional?
salemcripple 2 years ago
Radioactive.
cochranexyz 2 years ago
well yeah, i figured that. But those places should be off limits anyway. A thin sheet of glass isn't going to stop radiation i would think.
salemcripple 2 years ago
Really? I can't believe I went in a radioactive ship, wow!
taleseduardolima 2 years ago
I beleive USS was the first Nuclear Submarine.......and radiation usually takes...I think 54 years to cool down.....but Icould always be wrong...

Reminds me of the 1978 disaster film "Gray Lady Down", where they also used a SSN-571 type sub, modelled just like Nautilus.
