lol Linux is so forgotten and incompatilbe with so many things people now take for granted int he computer world, it seems it's mac the one that's been rising more and more instead of it. Windows still stays king, hated the days when I used ubunto after being a windows user, no games, had to download lots of drivers all the time, lotta programs I was used to using forget about'em.
Actually I dont, I used to be quite the linux freak until a few years ago. Linux is only well respected and operated in the server world, but then again, which Server OS isn't :)
It has little to do with linux though, compatiblity is on the shoulders of companies and because not so many people use Linux we get less support then any other. Not to mention there are to many distros but thats okay to an extent.
Really if we had the numbers of say Mac on market share then we would get support too. But for now we must make our own content/fixes.
IT's also a little different on machines like a Linux EEE. All the hardware will work with it, and for the most part most printers shouldn't be so hard to get working.
Safe is only because Linux and each of its distros have so little market share that no one codes viruses or malware for it.
Don't you realize it's booting from an SDHC of Class 6? It only transfers 6 megabytes per second. THAT'S WHY IT'S SLOW.
Asus EEE is a really marvellous machine if you use it for the right uses: what it's designed for, not other silly things. For example, why install Vista in the EEE, if this simply destroys all the philosophy about this CHEAP subnotebook. Use Linux: the Xandros version installed (kiddy interface) can be modified to show up on it's real glory
Xandros even in advanced mode is pretty crippled. Ubuntu boot up from SDHC is slow, but after that running off the card is fine. FireFox, Gimp, OpenOffice, even Compiz all work great running off of a SDHC card. If you don't mind the boot time, installing Ubuntu in this way is a good alternative.
"The right uses" is in the eye of the beholder, installing Vista does not "destroy" anything. I run WinXP and Ubuntu on mine and have no complaints. Don't be so negative.
LOL, how would you able to run vista on this notebook in which it has only a limited HDD capacity, and i think the minimum space requirement for vista is about 7 to 10 GB of diskspace and this has only about 2gb capacity. . .
where can i get Ubuntu "hard" sticker to put on my Laptop internal skin? It will be really cool if i can put that sticker beside the intel sticker other than the lame Vista sticker. :P
so.. should I buy the 2g EEE with a big SDHC card or buy the 4G Eee PC without? I'm on a major budget here :) It'd be actually $30 cheaper for me to get the 2G Eee with a 8GB SDHC... :?
Linux kernel can be reduced, customized, to only load data specific to YOUR hardware setup. Vista loads its default kernel stack and is hardly customizable. In the right hands, Ubuntu outperforms significantly Vista.
It onlt has a 4-8gb hdd and the graphics suck, and the prosessor isnt good either so vista may work but their wouldnt be any real point of geting it unless you just want to own a brick that can not do anything but load its own OS

yes, it should, since less cpu-power is needed. But i don't know if you will get the function-keys/the screenbrightness-settings to work. If you run a basic terminal without X at a high screen brightness it will still soak up your battery...

also if you have the cd but it won't boot at all when u put it in, u have to change ur bios settings. When ur computer manufacturer scrn shows, press delete or some other key until u see a blue screen. Change the boot from hard drive to cd drive or dvd drive.
Ok, I just want to know how to put Ubuntu onto the SD card? I have a 4g surf, and want to put XP for the ssd card and Ubuntu with Beryl (if possible) onto a 16gb sd. So, anyone have a step by step for SD installation? Thanks.
When will someone make a slightly smaller version of Ubuntu for the EEE PC? When I meant "stripped down" I didn't mean Xubuntu, I meant Ubuntu FOR the EEE.
It only really took just over a minute to get from boot (wasn't on until 30s in!) to login screen. It also isn't running off the laptop's (solid state) hard drive which would make it much faster. 7.10 is newer than Vista people, try booting Vista that fast (you cant at all actually) off a SD card!
wow okay thanks alot! if i installed ubuntu on my desktop (windows xp), would it erase all my files? like my pics, movies, songs, etc... ? ty for your help!

The Eee PC comes with a Celeron 630MHz CPU with 4GB SSD (no hard drive) and 512MB RAM. It is light weight and compact. It is smaller than a B5 size laptop.
If it runs from SSD, it should be much faster.
I tweaked the bootup and shutdown process. The bootup and Gnome launch time is within 1min 42sec. (I type my username and password very slowly). It is faster than this video clip :-)
It's uClinux. Frankly, it's more of a proof of concept. Moreover, a kid wrote that and it's obvious he doesn't know how to weigh power versus portability, if you pardon me saying so.
No that's wrong. The Battery is a lithium battery - lithium batteries don't depend on the usage but depend on the time. The life time of a lithium battery before it starts to loose it's running time is 1.5 to 2 years. If you really want to save your battery, wrap it in a freezer bag and put it into the refridgerator when not using it.
The longer launch time is due to activating Compiz Fusion. When I disabled the Compiz Fusion, the launch time is much faster. The loading time for Firefox is as fast as running under a Celeron 630MHz CPU. The overall speed of the device is acceptable.
The space of my device occupied about 3 to 3.5GB as I installed some programs to it.

Hi everybody,
I have a band (5 musicians)
I would like to install Ubuntu Studio on the new ASUS eeePC900 that will soon be released.
My goal is to record 10 audio tracks simultaneously and a virtual soft synth with an USB2 Audio interface (like Edirol or EMU,...)
I used to do that with an old Dell Inspiron 8100 from 2002 (Pentium 3, 850Mhz, 512 Mo Ram, 40 Go HD, ...)
So i think it will be easily possible...
If not i won't buy this marvelous small computer !

3. does ubuntu come with a ton of advertisements and sample programs that slow things way down?

1) Yes, for sure. It's a great consumer laptop at a price that can't be beat (cliche phrase, but true.)
2) Yeah, you could. The EEE ships with it's own version of Linux that you can put back onto the EEE or you could put Windows on it.
3) Hahaha, no. Ubuntu and Linux in general are open source, i.e. not for profit. There are absolutely no pieces of bloatware on the EEE.

Linux on your PSP? Didn't know they created a kernal for the PSP yet.

It's uClinux. Frankly, it's more of a proof of concept. Moreover, a kid wrote that and it's obvious he doesn't know how to weigh power versus portability, if you pardon me saying so.

I noticed you have taken the battery off of the laptop, is this to preserve the life of the battery? I think this is a good idea.

Hi SakuraUK,
Yes, you are right. I think that to remove the battery is good for the life of the battery when using AC power.

It works when it is closed. You can also set it at the power management option.

little over a minute plus login time. the xp build is way faster = /
how much space is ubuntu taking up there?
..and how fast does firefox load?
shedridge 4 years ago
Hi shedridge,
The longer launch time is due to activating Compiz Fusion. When I disabled the Compiz Fusion, the launch time is much faster. The loading time for Firefox is as fast as running under a Celeron 630MHz CPU. The overall speed of the device is acceptable.
The space of my device occupied about 3 to 3.5GB as I installed some programs to it.
