  • Good instructional video. However, recall the part where she says, 'The backhand clear is used to get you out of trouble,' roughly at 0:14; typically, the backhand clear will do precisely the opposite and put you in danger. You're probably better off playing the cross-court drop, but the clear is still a very nice shot.

  • what is backhand overhead grip..........

  • @TheNitinkhanna The Bevel Grip :)

  • What is a 'Backhand Overhead Grip' referred to in this video. Can somebody please explain the position of thumb for this shot. I am very confused. Will be very thankful.

  • @ansarmeerza The Bevel Grip i think.

  • Same. I need to improve my backhand shots with more comfortable equipment and more power x.x I cant hit it high and far enough and it ends up being easy for the other team to smash it. And when i try the back hand clears i mess up the timing.

  • it took years. for me T.T

  • everytime i do this, i lose a point :/

  • I find that the footwork for me is very essential in oorder to play a good backhand clear. Often i am too slow and i hit the shuttle too late so that it flies too short. Positioning yourself to the shuttle is a in import aspect to look at when training the backhand clear

  • How dare you make me dance

  • @ gregsPCs...... You are obviously not a singles player. You need to be really comfortable with your backhand or you'll soon run out of steam!

  • Damn .. . so hard

  • If you don't have the power to do a full backhand clear, "borrow" some energy from your body by pivoting ur upper body. Increase racket head speed too.

  • you did make me dance

  • im not a good backhand player but i think we need to go through the flow

  • wish to be a pro player someday....im nly 11 years old

  • Very nice explaination

  • i love badminton,especialy namibian badminton

  • i will never dance

  • where i practise they say that to shoot longer, when you hit the ball your racket goes back like a spring

  • @dannu677 1:49 . "Supinate the forearm and hit with a REBOUND action". But I´m glad you confirm it because I wasn´t very confident about that point.

  • Is it just me or Nathan Robertson looks a lot like Russell Brand?

  • what about the grip?

  • hopefully it will help me for tomorrows game !=)

  • I really wish people would calm down about the Tauifk backhand smash; yes, it's impressive, but it can't compete with forehand smashes, practically.

  • 1:07 he's sexy hahahaha :D

  • i believe if i play single with robinson,i am the winner

  • yur videos are great i will immediately follow your style only its good

  • we can make you lose, we can make you lose.

  • Ok, wen i play badminton, i hav this problem of going straight into my regular tennis forehands, then awkward slice backhands... is there any way 2 reduce this habit? Even my serve eventually bcomes a tennis slice serve...

  • @FF18Cloud dude your problem is genuine . to be honest you have to choose whether to play badminton or tennis bcz yur body will get confuse if you play both seriously

  • @FF18Cloud lol i know what you mean, i play badminton tennis and pping pong .___.

I can tell you it does really mess with your head. ( I did a ping pong serve throw while playing badminton ) ;D i am feel dumb when i do that LOL

  • These videos are great for my badminton class.

  • what is a backhand overhead grip?

  • Back hand clears are always impressive but pretty poor choice of shot. Fitness is 10x as important in singles because you need to run round the shot to play with your forehand. Opens your choice of shots up and gives you more control. The main reason I would say that you shouldn't rely on it is that it turns you away from your opponents and makes it harder for you to get back to the base position to return a smash.

Better option is to practise a backhand straight or cross court dropshot.

  • Some of your statement there I agree and some arent. If you give backhand to net seldomly, your opponent will now your next shot and theyll be ready for kill

  • There more of a get out of a tricky situation shot. Always playing backhand drops can lead to your opponent being at the net and then attacking you very fast. Whereas a smash from the back is a little slower so you may recover.

  • @GregsPCs Do you have an opinion on its use in doubles?

  • @TheJamesTrain

Avoid it like the plague. The back hand is weaker than the forehand to the point where you lose points because of it. You can avoid using it, you just need to be faster, work on foot work, positioning and team work. The only time it is justified is when its the only shot you can play and you've been caught off guard. In conclusion, its a last ditch attempt at saving the point.

  • @GregsPCs OR overheads.

  • good vid good technique please accept my technique backhand 1 min

  • "slightly bent elbow to protect the joint" - i wonder if this works for forehand clear since most people say "you have to strengthen the arm" .

  • is nathan robertson using a bevel grip or basic grip??

  • haha how about taufik hidayat backhand smash

  • I love the one tracy does at 0:36 it's perfect. Relaxed and with her back to it.

  • her name is gail

  • It's Tracy Hallam. The vo is by Gail Emms.

  • i totally agree i tried this shot quite a few times and its great to force the opposition to play it deep but when they can't , you can smash it when it drops short.

  • These videos have helped me quite a lot. My dad showed this to me. . ., it hard to hit a good backhand.

  • Well~I finally do it. But I still can't get the way of how the power is "flew" in this shot, the longestest distance I can hit is about 70% length of the court. Maybe what I need is more and more practice? Or this video have mentioned that but I just can't hear? If so, plz type me the things related, since I am not very good at english.Thz~

  • Yes, practice is the key to mastering this shot, get the timing right! Its more about technique than power!

  • although i can't really do a good backhand clear either, what i heard from the video is that u've to get your arm relaxed in order to generate power. and also try using the strength of your entire body. hope it helps :)

  • I often drop my racket while I am doing it =.='

  • Are you holding it correctly? And how do you go at hitting it? Do you relax too much and don't grip at the moment of impact? Because I've never dropped my racket doing it before.

  • er...I don't think I hit it in a right way while I am trying to do clear. However, i can do a drop when using back hand, I don't know why~

  • Well, for me I'm much better at the backhand drop which explains why you would drop ur racket. When you use a drop your grip is more relaxed and if you only practice that then you will have more problems with learning that you must use a more wide and flowing movement where you must "rush" the birdie or to put it in simpler terms, to relax then tighten ur muslces to generate power. If you are too used to backhand drops it will be more difficult adjusting.

  • Then I should have been working on clear before drop? Or should I learn how to aim while using backhand? Cause I found it really hard to see and hit the shuttle when it fly overhead.~

  • Well, I'm not a professional on this, but I think you just have to learn that for a backhand clear, instead of holding the racket above your head waiting and softly dropping. You have to hold it, aim then bring the racket down and create momentum to hit it at its highest point. Just like for a forehand clear but for your backhand instead.

  • When you finish playing the shot, the racket should be parallel to the net. Hit the shuttle as high as possible

  • aw 3rd poster xD

  • it always hurts my wrist when i try to hit a backhand really hard ~

  • ; )
