  • maan, this robot voice is fuckin annoying

  • I never knew the music to Advance Guardian Heroes was this great, despite the technology.

  • What's the name of the game in 02:18

  • beat em ups are the best games if you ask me and its kinda sad that technos aka million arent making more games as much as these days we need them around on the newer consoles i feel beat em up fans deserve more then what we have gotten in the last years please do some more history on beat em ups

  • Before Treasure, Data East created what influenced parts of Treasure: The Cliffhanger - Edward Randy. Treasure's character artist HAN was such a big fan of the game that he named two characters in Guardian Heroes, Edward and Randy (a.k.a. Nando), in homage. Not only that, but the fight against Orange in Gunstar Heroes was modeled after the final battle against the general known as the Dark Ogre in Edward Randy.

Although similar to The Last Crusade, it did better than the film's games then.

  • @MHMemeDoubleYourFun You know your history. That is good trivia.

  • nice man..i want the bare robo-vocal to pinch for a tune!!!

  • Where's Renegade (aka Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun)? That was the game that started the beat 'em up genre. Double Dragon was the follow up to that game and introduced 2 player co-op.

  • @Soukyugurentai Yes Renegade is great grandpa of all beat'em ups. Double Dragon simply captured a lot of attention that turned Beat'em ups into a craze with it's obvious catering toward westerners. Double Dragon is in deed the sequel to Renegade and Renegade deserves credit for the birth of Beat'em ups in arcades. very well said.

  • @TreasureChannel Double Dragon borrows some elements from the 1984 Karate Champ arcade, which was the very first fighting game that became successful and popularized the genre. Both games were developed by Technos Japan, a company founded by former Data East employees.

Speaking of Data East and Technos Japan, did you know the red car from Road Blaster and the helicopter from Thunder Storm appear in the first parts of Double Dragon 1&2?

  • @Soukyugurentai Actually, Irem's 1984 Spartan X arcade (later released outside of Japan as Kung-Fu Master) was the founder of the beat 'em up genre, but the effects of the 1983-1984 North American Video Game Crash made it less successful outside of Japan, and later became better known for its NES port known outside of Japan simply as "Kung Fu", because of the NES popularity boom.

Read my other comment about Double Dragon.

  • Guardian heroes really should get ported to psn & xbl

  • What is this, a commercial for Advance Guardian Heroes? Interesting...

  • Advance Guardian Heroes is a great game but not in par with the original on the Sega Saturn.

  • You got some of your facts wrong. Advance Guardian Heroes wasn't the first beat 'em up Treasure made. Also, I don't get your evolution chart. Double Dragon started it, River City Ransom evolved it, and most of the later beat 'em ups were devolutions of RCR (with a few expections, like those D&D arcade games)...

  • @anupsanju One thing at a time smarty pants jr. What is the first Arcade style beat'em up from Treasure?

  • Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn...

  • @anupsanju I believe that game is aunique beat of it's own. It is not like Golden Axe and TMNT, as far as tradition is concerned. It resembles Fatal Fury, if Fatal Fury had an adventure mode. We do understand why Guardian Heroes Saturn gets Grouped with all Beatem ups, but can you see why Advance Guardian Heroes more resembles TMNT and Golden AXE and Double Dragon?

  • @TreasureChannel

the thing that makes it lean more into traditional beat em ups is the lack of 3 plane mechanics & it's lack of depth in comparison. that facet of gh on saturn imo was a necessary evolution to facilitate combat that should have become a standard. even in recent reviews of scott pilgrim i see lack of depth perception is an annoyance for most players who just 'get used to it'. GH on the saturn is in a class of it's own, if not genre, & only castle crashers has ever come close.

  • guardian heroes is pure genius. The original on the Saturn is awesome by having 16 player brawls on the screen at one time.

  • @WillyLee23 Guardian Heroes on Saturn is genius. But 16 player is more than we remember, is that a typo? must be. Although the GBA Guardian Heroes Advance only has 4 player VS, it really is a lot of fun even on 1 player Story mode seeing as 19 playable characters are unlock-able by collecting lots of Gems and investing in a lot of Research during the game.

  • my favs&more:alien vs predator the one with the robots,3kingdoms old type witht he life bars, cadallacs vs dinosaurs, etc

  • Capcom is another company that seems to have lost their staff members for beatem'ups. All Capcom seems to do now is Resident Evil, and some scattered randomness, no multi player beatem'ups, unless you count Spyborgs! HAHA! Konami and Capcom, what did you do to scare off your people!? Oh well, Treasure is releasing a new game through Nintendo Wii, Sin and Punishment 2...Should be epic. I'd like to see another beatem'up by Treasure though.

  • Who are are you? You posses an incredibly informed opinion of Treasure...HAHA. Yeah, Guardian Heroes Advanced is awesome and it does feel more like ninja turtles arcade or the simpsons arcade than Guardian Heroes for Saturn. In that light, it is probably one of the most miss-understood games ever made. You could actually miss-out on enjoying this game simply by stumbling over it not being a standard carbon-copy type sequel.

  • That Guardian Heroes Advanced looks pretty damn fun. I think I'll see if I can find it, because I haven't played a bad Treasure game yet.

  • @BlitzTiger

Sadly, AGH is not a very good game. I love the original GH, but AGH was a mess. The GBA couldn't handle the intensity (or the game was badly programmed), controls were very awkward, the learning curve and difficulty was inconsistant at best, and level design left much to be desired. It's a shame they didn't wait to make it on the DS instead. As it stands, the Bleach DS games are far more fun, and more faithful to the original GH.

  • Somewhat bizarre that this starts off as a sort-of history of beat-em-ups before becoming a pro GHA video. For those who haven't played Guardian Heroes Advance, I'd take the comments with a pinch of salt as even most Treasure fans have pointed out GHA is far from a great game.

  • 3:57

    Penis lasers! El oh el.

  • While this video is very informative and all, I find the robot voice extremely annoying.

  • I can't wait till they release Sin and Punishment 2 and the 360 shooter. They need to make another beat em up as well.

  • Will you be making another one? this was very enjoyable. And I have AGH on my GBA and knowing that their are more charaters for me to unlock will make me want to play it again now.

  • Very nice.

  • Wow, i've watched this "documentary" thousands of times and I am still expecting Treasure's run n' guns or treasure's shoot em ups.... PLEASE do them :D . U'll make a fan happy.

  • Fascinating! I had no idea the two were connected.

It's kind of weird, really - Konami beat'em ups are known for their fantastic presentation and ability to capture the essence of licensed properties, but not really for depth of gameplay...and Treasure games are known for unique IP's and hugely deep gameplay.

Also, I have to say: AGH *needs* an upgraded release over XBLA/PSN/Wii Ware. Amazing and super deep game, but it was unfortunately hampered by the system it was on IMO.

  • Konami contracted Treasure for Gradius V.Castlevania V and Contra V would go nicely with that trend.A new Guardian Heroes with Production values ALA "Wario Land Shake It," would be fun, but it would depend on GBA Guadian Heroes.Look at this evidence:Sin and Punishment 1(N64) was released on Wii VC,it was received well, now a sequal on Wii.However,Saturn games aren't on Wii VC or XBLA(TMK).Since GBA games don't play on DSi, perhaps GBA is moving to Wii VC. I'd support Advance GH VC, for a sequal.

  • Because Wario Land Shake It looked so great...I'd rather have something that looked good, like Metal Slug.

  • Are you saying you would rather have Metal Slug, over Advance Guardian Heroes, on Wii VC?

  • Well, actually, it is on VC. Anyways, I was just saying that if they remaked the graphics on Advance Guardian Heroes, I'd want it to look good, like Metal Slug, rather than like the Wario Land Shake It game. An Advance Guardian Heroes remake would be pretty awesome.

  • @anupsanju It is true that Advanced Guardian Heroes' weakest point is the Graphic plunge, however the Idea of going Metal Slug (Pixelated) over Wario Land Shake It (Smooth Cell art) is a little odd considering that the intro for Guardian Heroes Saturn clearly displays the Characters in Cell Theatrical Anime Art. While the Art Style of Mosaic Pixel is awesome, we can't help but feel that the painterly nature of Guardian Heroes' Background art fits more comfortably with Painterly Characters.

  • @TreasureChannel

    he was just being sarcastic

  • Yeah GHA for GBA was a BIG letdown. I thought I was finally going to enjoy the sequal to one of sega saturn's best games.

  • The Saturn original is a beast of it's own. GBA GH is a straight up beat'em up like Streets of Rage and TMNT.If we did get another Guardian Heroes, it wouldn't be like either, but I would hope they lean toward "Arcade Beat'em up 4 player" because no one else knows how to do them the way I like, but Treasure.

  • Well that's no exscuse to make GHA so awful! I mean com'on the game is broke. Maybe Treasure will release GH for xbla!

  • First, can you explain what you think is broken about it, because we like the controls a lot...Also, they are two different games, Guardian hereos for Saturn, plays like Fatal Fury, Guardian heroes Advanced plays like Golden Axe. Other than the Similar Graphics and character names, there as different as Smash brothers and Mario Galaxy.
