The court heated up due to the heat and it created air bubbles in the court so when the ball hit it didn't bounce off the air pocket. Happens pretty frequently actually
There was air under the field, wich absorbed the whole energy of the ball and made it stop instant. They just drilled thru and released the air and filled the hole.
@Pundit2k I'm not quite sure, but I think an air pocket gets trapped under the surface causing the dead spot. I've seen these before where officials literally drill holes into the court to fix the problem.
@mrgrant888 But can an air pocket under the surface stop the ball dead like that? I mean, the ball is made of rubber, so shouldn't it bounce off anything solid.
@Pundit2k I've done some reading. Apparently, the foundation of the court is usually an asphalt or concrete, then a layer of cushioned material is placed over it, and finally coated with the gritty paint for traction. When excessive heat builds up on the court from the beaming sun, like during the Australian Open, it causes bubbles to form beneath the cushion surface (called "plexicushion") and separates it from the hard undersurface. No hard surface means no bounce.
You guys are over thinking this...obviously, the ball's atomic structure and particles during impact to the point where the backspin rotated 728.70986 %, allowing for an instant stop of molecular structure, bonding with the abrasive surface of the court...Some people...
@yourmumsdreams no, there was a pocket of air under the court caused by the heat preventing any rebound whatsoever that had to be drilled through and popped. sometimes it is not so simple.
Who snuck a hacky sack out onto the court?
