I got to speak with some of the demo team right afterwards, and that is where they wanted it to fall. They had a buncha dirt berms around to keep the debris in.  It got demolished because it was starting to fall apart and become a major safety hazard.

Nothing went wrong with the demolition. What are you talking about? It went exactly as planned right in the spot they planned to put it.

Typically, when demolishing things, they want to put it right down into itself, not sideways, since that causes more damage

are they not taking down the whole building? just the shaft? that would explain it
