While growing up, everytime this commercial would come on the TV, a call would go throughout the house and me and all my siblings would come running to the TV room. It would would take the rest of the evening for my parents to get us calmed down. My brother did a great imitation ot the chimp rubbing his head.
My wife just bought a box of Red Rose for the first time. I asked, "you remember the commercial with the chimps?" she thought I was crazy! Youtube rocks...
Oh my God! My girlfriend and I would call each other on the phone when we were in junior high and just laugh hysterically until our stomachs hurt! I am so so happy I found this on You Tube! I just called my girlfriend and played this for her and we ended up laughing hysterically like we used to back in the 60s. Warms my heart!
Does anyone know if any of the other commercials are available for viewing? I especially remember the one in which the chimps portray elegant ladies having a tea party.
Thanks, I lived in St. Clair Shores, Michigan in the 60's and have a lot of memories of the Red Rose Tea monkey commercials. Your post is the first time I have been able to find any of them on-line.
I remember a Red Rose Tea commercial similar to this. As I recall, the differences were that the other commercial was shot in color, and the lead singer sounded a lot like Louis Armstrong.
The chimp rubbing and smacking his head must have been really pissed off because that's the only time they do that. If they do that then you better keep your hands away because they'll bite before you can pull your hand back!
@elc1960 This may be true for chimps in the wild but it isn't for chimps born and trained in captivity. These chimps were trained to do these actions. I know this because my father was the owner/trainer of the chimps and they lived with us at home. They were like brothers and sisters with us and were not violent or angry.
I'm not sure when this came out, but I'm 50 and remember seeing it on TV back in the very early '60s. I remember that there was a promotional tie-in with a hand puppet of one of the chimps (either the drummer or the singer). Thank you, oh THANK YOU for posting this treasure!
I first saw this by following a link from Yes Detroit forums. I'm way past 50 and remember that my brother, sister and I would go crazy when this came on TV!
Excellent! I loved that commercial! I even tracked down the 45RPM record of that song. When my kids were little I'd put the song on and dance around like the monkeys- my kids thought I was nuts!
We talked about this silly commercial for YEARS! A friend always does the EEEEE-AH-AH-AH-AH-OH-OH-OH-OH the one monkey does and makes us laugh all the time! Thanks for posting it!!!
OMG...I was just at Thanksgiving dinner and my brother brought this commercial up and we were hysterical just talking about it...I had to come home and find it on youtube and laughed uncontrollably!!!! This is sooo funny, esp @ :31-40.... Thanks for posting!
Thank you for this! It was one of my favorite commercials growing up and I always wished it would comeback. I'm from downriver Detroit, and watched Soupy every morning.....wondering if there are any clips of sargent sackto???
I told buddies in college in Texas about this ad back in the early 80's and they were cracking up and singing it WITHOUT EVER SEEING IT ! I'm 50 and I have never forgotten seeing this as a kid ! Thanks for digging this up !
LOL... Terrific posting! A Pittsburgh radio DJ edited the music track about 3 times so that the song would stretch about three minutes long. If the ad agency had been smart & released the tune on a 45, they would've made a bundle! And Red Rose still makes great tea today.
No, it wasn't Porky, the "Daddio of the Radio". It was the late R.D. Summers, who hosted the 3WS "Oldies Diner" -- until his untimely Feb. 15th passing. The station is still hunting his replacement. They're now playing general oldies in R.D.'s timeslot from an automated computer system... that just don't cut it.
We are really getting older. Because a lot of WWSW's oldies are 80's music. Ican still remember old d.js Chuck Brinkman, Jack Armstrong and old groovy qvey Jim Quinn.
It seems radio programmers don't really understand what "oldies" are. The term originated in the late 50's during the heyday of Top-40 radio for songs that were no longer on the station's survey, but were still popular with the listening audience. Top-40 radio existed until the mid-70's with the arrival of disco, Talk-radio & MTV. Sorry folks, but IMO any song since the mid-70's is NOT an "oldie"; stations who include this recent music are purely targetting for a younger age demographic.
According to the Detroitkidshow website, DJ Zeke Johnson of WAMO was the one that edited the music and it WAS released on 45 (complete with a picture of the record on the webpage)
The first time I heard 3 Dog Night's "Joy To The World" played on an OLDIES station, I said "Oh no! It's official! I'm old!" (released in 1971 while I was in 7th grade)
The Pittsburgh dj was Mad Mike Metro, WZUM. He used to how the commercial on a screen at the dances he did at West View Dance Land. He passed away 31, Oct. 2000.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I loved this ad as a kid growing up in Massachusetts. All my friends remembered it too. Please don't ever take this one down.
I just loved it! What a joy! My sis sent it to me and all my bros & sis'(8 of us...the way it used to be), a lot of fun memories! Thanks for having it "out there".
i remember this from mid sixties,i would run on sunday nites just before 11pm news..i was just a kid but would stay up just to see it...it has to be the greatest ad ever
Maybe some one can dig up an old Thom Mccan commercial where it shows a man showing the inside of a shoe that he was in. At the end of the commercial a foot is going in the shoe with the little guy still in it hollering Stop! Stop!
What a great memory from my carefree childhood days! Seeing this between my favorite tv shows in the 1960's was always a delight. Love the drummer wearing the shades.
Greatest TV commercial EVER! When it comes to pure entertainment value, pound for pound, you can't beat chimps! I have been searching for this for YEARS!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!

Oh man! I couldn't have been more than 5 years old when this was on. I'm 50 now! But I still remember the music and monkeys. Thanks for the great memory!
I know, huh? There's like 2 or three more of these somewhere. I like the "red red red red red rose" version. Something about the clock strikes 4 in most English homes, and that means its tea time. If anyone can find this one and the others please post, such memories.
I remember seeing this ad on television in New York State (USA) over WHEN Channel 5 in Syracuse (now WTVH). I was eight years old at the time. LMAO then, and still do now! I'd been searching for this video on the web for years!
Wow, what a coincidence...me, too...and just to prove it to you, WHEN was Channel 8 at the time...remember? Only 3 (WSYR-NBC) and 8 (CBS) until 9 (ABC) came, and they moved 8 to 5. How's that for CNY geezer trivia?
(formerly "whoowndachiefs") I somehow remember seeing this ad play before the soaps on CBS (around noon) on TV 5 back in '64.
And you are right about Channel 8 -- I did a little research and found out that the FCC forced WROC in Rochester and WHEN in Syracuse to switch frequencies for some crazy reason. To this very day, WROC is still Channel 8. Both stations made the switch back in 1961 by order of the FCC. Even the FCC "monkeys around" sometimes (LOL)!
Someone's had too much cocaine.

There was another Red Rose TV ad shown in Canada about the same time--late 50s early 60s, featuring the Marquee Chimps swinging on chandeliers, etc.
Perhaps someone could track down that one and post it here?
Thanks.
