Although I agree with you, I wasn't commenting on their skill. I literally meant that this martial art/sport is not judo, it's Shuai Jiao, a chinese folk wrestling style.
@ronin954 There is no such thing as kodokan black belt judo tournament. The only torunament held for people who take Judo classes from Kodokan is the Red-White Tournament held in Spring and Autumn every year, which is mainly for the Dan promotion purpose. Serious Judo students have already got to Dan level when they are in Senior High School, and they always go to universities such as Tokai (東海) and Kokushikan (国士舘) in Kanto and Tenri (天理) in Kansai.
@ronin954 How do you judge them to be San-Kyu level? As a Roku-Dan I say they are Ichi-Dan level and these two youngsters have great skills. In Judo Shiai the match finishes once an Ippon is scored, whereas in Shuaijiao the match lasts for 5 minutes no matter how many clean 'Ippon' throw you score, so the tactics are completely different.
these aren't sacrifice throws: first one was li dao gou counter...second one is called tang dao...and is ok if your knee doesn't touch the ground before execution.third was a counter and not a sacrifice technique...the throw was countered by hooking the leg with the foot, holding on and keeping weight on the opponents lower back and hips forcing the thrower down first.
A sacrifice throw is any throw in which you intentionally go to the ground and sacrifice your position. There are two types. A back sacrifice when you drop to the ground first to pull your opponant over you or a top sacrifice when you drive your weight into and down on your opponant. All of those were sacrifice throws.
Regardless of what ever you call them when I competed you had to remain standing in order to score your throw.I was just asking when they began allowing those techniques.
The rules for Xiao Dehe changed in 2007.Now,if you attempt it and fail you lose points.
Prior to 1953 these throws were still practiced and common in competition but they were scored as"ping jiao" even if you smashed the snot out of your opponent.
These throws have been scored since 1953.55 years already.
Prior to that they were common in competition but were scored "ping jiao" or even... even if you smashed the snot out of your opponent.
We have a different definition of "sacrifice throw" today.
Btw, in 2007 the rules regarding Xiao Dehe changed: Now, if you attempt Xiao Dehe and fail you lose points. Reason: a 3rd point - 3rd part of your body - touched the ground which is the essence of SJ scoring today.
Not that old. I've done shuai chiao since 1975and I was in china in 88 and 90. With the exception of the lower inner hooking throw they weren't scoring stuff like that. Do the rules vary between the different types of Shuai chiao?
Yep, and I suppose when you said bohk you refer to the style exist in Eastern Inner Mongolia like Inner Wu banner which is next to Hebei. These 4 regions are traditional home grounds for Shuaijiao.
"styles" is a term popularized in Wushu circles that is misleading when used in Shuaijiao.
Please don't think of "styles" of Shuaijiao as you might "styles" of Wushu... think of it more as "styles" of boxing: Cuban, Russian, Mexican, New York, etc...
They all compete evenly and fairly on the same platform, and all the techniques used are known to everyone.
Art of War is exactly why this kind of Chinese Martial Art will be revived in China. AoW is the perfect platform to showcase kickass throwing skills...case in point: Aotegen Bateer: Shuaijiao mate! Karo is not the only dude who can throw now...watch out!
I dont mean that the throws and the art of Shuaijiao will have no room... I mean that this form of competition seems very dull now. And I think it will loose a lot of spectators and practitioners to AoW and the like.
there is room in China and the world for more than MMA... people still watch wrestling in the US, they still watch the mundials in Brazil, they still watch Judo in Japan.
Thanks Mate, I wanted to see who I have that I could match either one of them with.....They both are very very good Shuai Chiao players. They set the bar high for anyone wishing to compete with either! Again thanks for posting this stuff.
Ha! That reversal starting at 1:27 was great! I couldn't believe it when he came out on his feet and regained his stance, but then to reverse it so smoothly was slick as anything.. Nice.
how is this scored? How do you win a shuai jiao fight?'

different types of shuaijiao?
if you were competing in Boke then yes the rules are different, but Shuaijiao rules are standardized nationally.
ashwix 3 years ago
Yeah, there are four main styles of shuai chiao as well as several minor ones. The main ones are Bao ding kuai chiao, Bejing, Tien tsin and bohk.
