Course you won't solve anything with hate. But self defence is necessary when someone is wrongfully trying to kill you, and you have two choices:
1. Do nothing. You'll die, they'll live.
2. Kick them in the stomach where they've left themselves open, then run. Both of you'll probably live, just a bruised perhaps.
1. Someone dies
2. Nobody dies
"Thou shalt not kill". You reduce the death by 1. Of course #2 could kill, but with much less chance of death.
