  • I agree with John Piper except for his invitation to Rick Warren to speak. Bad move I think.

  • The hypocrisy is enough to shame a pharisee. John Piper tells regular men that retirement is bad, but it's okay if he takes an 8 month leave of absence from work just because he and the elders say it is?

  • First of all, when in retirement you don't have to be retired, you can still invest in people's lives and bring in souls to Jesus Christ.

Second of all, we should not be slaves to jobs, because no job is more important than the lord, your job should coordinate with him, and I know some don't have this liberty because they have gotten jobs or studied certain career paths before becoming saved, but everything should be the lord's our time our money our work. The lord will provide

  • Both these men are self absorbed idiots. Why aren't they concerned with Jesus command to clothe the naked and feed the hungry. Hypocrites!

  • Are you nuts or just woefully ignorant? Christians as a group do more to feed the hungry and clothe the naked than do any other group. Conservatives out give liberals almost 2-1. We unlike liberals have to tell the Truth as you live in a cloud uninformed and unconcerned with facts.

  • @Sweeper1964 Your stupidity is jaw-dropping/ These clowns don't care about feeding the hungry or clothing the naked. They're interested in their own profit and nothing else. Stop your self -delusional B.S. and volunteer in a soup kitchen.

  • It's frightens me any time I see hero worship(idol worship for another human being.

As far as this man being descriptive...it actually being very critical of others.

I am a Christian who is fed up with "Christians" being overly judgemental and critical of others. Talking about someones skin , etc... is personal attacks.

Stick to the word and keep our opinions ourselves.

  • I can not wait to get a summer home in Wyoming/ Montana. It is going to be so beautiful and amazing. Get away from hectic cities and enjoy what the Almighty has created.

  • My fave part, is when he said, " if you are healthy from 85 to 65, dream another dream!"

  • John says the truth, but people, especially in the US are afraid of the truth..they prefer to get comfy in their oblivious society..on the other hand there is so much awareness coming out of this great country through people such as John and others..

  • Piper is the man!!!

  • People think that somehow this world will become perfect again which is lie satan has destroyed our life we must turn to GOD and stop living for this life as though it was eternal rather than temperal.

  • People are trusting in the power and intellegence of Man and not God they don't believe God has any influence or power over them.

    They're looking backwards.

  • People don't know what eternity is because they've haven't heard it in such along time no biblical words from a preacher they've looked at this temperal life as eternal life because God is so far away from us in culture today.

  • I drink my coffee in thanks to GOD and I'm more than willing to live for GOD.

What bothers me is people are hording their life to the point of death while they're hording everything they've accumulated their soul is dieing it's being pulled into hell.

  • People think they're invincible that this life is built to last they rely SO MUCH on the so-called knowledge of men, the 'power' of men and hand their souls to satan while living in isolation from GOD AMAZING!!??

  • I don't understand how people can just live for this life they think it is forever and yet it's passing away!! O_O

  • eat drink be merry (PAST)

    eat drink be lazy (NOW).

  • before it used to be said that "Don't lie, cheat, or steal in our culture and now it's like more and more the world is dumbing down people are lieing cheating stealing.

instead of going futher towards maturity people are slowly but steadly becoming like little kids.

  • GOD says in his word "Do not be surprized if the world hates you because of me".

  • It's amazing man chooses to laugh at life even though it's crumbling right from under them.

  • The Brothers Martin is the background song! Wow, I had no idea that anyone else listened to them hahaha! Thanks :)

  • 2004 we sold everything in America and moved to Thailand as missionaries. We are Living Life to the Full, God has given us our Daily Bread and it is an Amazing Journey trusting in God to direct our steps. It is not easy but it is Amazing !!

Love in His PASSION, Doc. ;-)

  • the best plan for the future is faith. Faith is the only thing that is going to get you through the future we face. Invest that faith in others.

  • in the uk women retire 5 years earlier than men, i fcking hate my country and am proud to say so

  • it is biblically wise according to proverbs to plan for the future. Sometimes John Piper gets a little overboard by making sweeping generalities

  • But planning for the future doesn't need to mean planning for retirement. It could, but it doesn't necessarily. And there's a difference between making sure you can live when you're older and making a point to be COMFORTABLE and lazy when you're older.

  • thanks for you comment:

There is nothing wrong biblically with being comfortable, but it is sin to be lazy. I don't think it is right to equate retirement with being lazy. There is nothing wrong with desiring a comfortable quite life in Christ (I thess 4:11, 1 Tim 2:2).

  • a person can retire and still not be lazy, a good example is when God commanded the Levites to retire from service at the age of 50. (numbers 8:24-25). They helped and served a little, but they stepped back and let the next generation come up. I believe there is plenty of scriptural evidence for the concept of retirement. The problem is the way people define retirement. Godly children taking care of their parents is a God ordained means of retirement as well I think.

  • Exactly. Hopefully by the time people are ready to retire they have much more free time to enter some kind of ministry such as teaching the Bible,....(provided they have spent their time and money wisely in investing in good books to learn the Bible and Christian doctrine).

  • That is not what he is saying I don't think. What he is talking about is motivations, desires, getting our priorities in their right order......don't just settle down into the "retire" mindset Americans work all of their working years to enter into.

  • OK, great.........but this country is facing the prospect of a massive slide into poverty after 40 years of regressive economic and social policy.

Forget the widescreen tv, we need to make sure people have some sense of dignity in their elder years.

  • Translation: Don't save your money in retirement plans, give it to my church, make me rich.

  • guess you missed the whole point of the video

  • I'm opened mined enough to let you explain what you believe that I missed. Please do.

  • TheArchAngel90650,

It seems to me that he is saying that rather than padding our own accounts, we should be constantly finding people who are in need and invest in their lives & tell them that is your love of Jesus Christ that moved you 2 help them through their crisis. I also see him talking about putting more focus on doing the things that makes Christ happy so that our retirement will lead us 2 the ultimate place after death.

Too few people do 4 others if there is nothing in it 4 them.

  • Please pray for my grandmother as she can still get up and move around but refuses to do so and spends most of her time watching tv. I worry about her spirit and perhaps past wounds that are going unhealed due to her tv addiction between her and my parents and me and my siblings as well...

  • Spot on.

  • I'm really skeptical of people who think that spreading Christianity is something that you can do from the comfort of your own home. America is the richest country the world has ever seen. John Piper would be counted as rich by 99.9% of people who have ever walked the earth. Your average world citizen would notice John Pipers clean water, comfy house, low-crime area, and plentiful food. They would not notice John Pipers old blazer unless he pointed it out.

  • What they might notice is the liberty with which Piper gives away his resources - his sermons (nearly 30 years worth) for free on his website, along with PDFs of most of his books for free. Not too many christian ministries are that free with their materials.

The evidences of salvation in the way people live would indicate that America is a place still in need of regeneration, and is still a good missionary ground. There are better targets for prosperity preaching than piper.

  • What are you trying to point out? Are you judging God for using John Piper's ministry in America? Yes, he has money just like every other American but have you taken a look at how he spends his money? Is he responsible and wise, not wasting his money away? Don't condemn John for the blessings he has, but take a look at his character and how he uses those blessings.

  • "Don't condemn John for the blessings he has, but take a look at his character and how he uses those blessings. "

How he using those blessing is entirely my point! John Piper has the blessing not only to have HEARD the gospel, but also the means to TRAVEL to anywhere in the world where people have not heard the gospel, yet he comfortably stays where is.

  • Like I said, missions is not his ministry although he does support it. He is a theologian, writer, and pastor.

  • Hey, when God says, "move." I believe he would move. He is a pastor and needs to take care of his flock. We are all guilty of overanalyzing people. That is what we have been taught by the world. But, we need to match what he is doing compared to the Holy Scriptures. I'm sure he prays before he plans to travel. Christ has him where he wants him for now.

    Christ's Blessings

  • Beautiful, Dr. Piper.

  • John Piper asks people for money his entire life, and then tells them they can't retire? The front page of his web site is how to "support his ministry" (Wouldn't you think a warning about hell might be more important on the front page?) When John Piper doesn't need to ask people for money, and he's actually worked a day in their shoes, THEN he can tell them how to spend their older years.

  • You haven't really studied under Piper ha, this would explain your ignorant comment.

  • Ohh man.. soooo wrong.. the pipe beast doesnt run heat in the winter so they can support more missionaries throughout the year.. he's worn the same blazer while preaching for 20 some odd years.. Money is the last thing he wants, phil 4:17, its just necessary to further the kingdom. Research him, he's a beast. Matthew 6:21, where is your treasure..?

  • MarySmith, you're one of those people that will find fault with anything, aren't you.

  • lol what?

  • no such thing as retirement for the Christian really. seems to be a worldly phenomenon. labor for that which perisheth not.

  • great point!

  • Thank you Lord for the faithful men of God.

  • He really is saying somethign he knows about. We can see in his eyes the terror of retiring for himself.

  • he really has an straight foward and truthful perspective on the gospel. i really dig john piper. i have been reading stuff by him lately and he really gets wat jesus says and doesnt try to dement it like most of us do. but can someone please explain why he mentioned the blind black guy? i didnt quite understand why he threw that in.

  • Nice video.

  • Amen to that. John Piper is truly one of the great preachers of our generation.

  • you remind me how I used to be. I thought the same things you did regarding religion, God and Christianity etc... it's ok, I respect that. Each to their own. Maybe you too will find God one day.

  • Well , if God had any sense he would probably be found on a beach in Australia somewhere , sipping a tinny and watching the waves roll in. Bad people get sent to England when they die ,to drive around London in the rain. Repent !

  • Go read a Bible and be blown away!!!

  • amen :)

  • amen

  • "and get a tan on your old leathery 70 year old skin so you look like a shammy... those old knarled legs..." LOL

I have to admit, I really crack up when no one is around when Pastor John Piper gets really descriptive, I love it. I'm an artist and I can tell if God didn't call him to pastorialship, he would definitely be a journalist or somewhere in the journalism field (well he has written many books, but my point is)...

  • Everything out of this man's mouth is like gold.... he's got such a handle on all of this.

  • I'm grateful brother Piper is my pastor. He lives what He preaches. My favorite line is: We are on this planet to make much of Jesus Christ! Amen!

  • hey i have a question since you know john piper .. do you know if he knows Paul washer?

  • I heard a sermon from Paul Washer talking highly of John Piper, but I'm not sure if they know each other.

  • I love JOhn pipers compassion, sincerity, purity, earnesty and simplicity that he preaches with.

  • I really enjoy John piper. I think many of us plan for financial security because of our lack of trusting in GOD to supply our needs. Therefore we attempt to supply them ourselves which leads to greed, narcisissm, selfishness, and false security.

  • I agree completely, Tymere. Take care.

  • I certainly save and have retirement funds. however I realize that my security and provision does not come from it. Ultimately it belongs to GOD and I am only a steward over it. You take care too Lane, stay strong in the LORD, love with the love of GOD my christian friend.

  • good preaching against the idol of comfort and entertainment...we as a society here in the west are being entertained to death as it were, this is not the average american message being proclaimed here...which is why these messages deserve our attention, thought, consideration, time and effort. you won't hear joel osteen or other word of faith or "positive, don't want to offend or scare anyone away" "preachers" say. these are not preachers in the sense of what it means to be a preacher

  • eh, Matthew 6:6: "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."

We should take that very seriously.

  • can you explain what you mean by that?
