i love the 3 f350 on aback of a boat but with about 2,900 pounds just in moters and about 100 gal an hour to run full speed. i would have to go with a 2300cc keywest with a f 250 with fly by wire for the shifter
Four strokes do better on fuel than two strokes, and suzuki gets the best mileage of ALL of these. You could run FOUR Suzuki 300's and only be a couple pounds heavier than the three Yamaha's. I've done the math!
If you're in the market for triple 350's, is cost THAT big of an issue? Each motor costs $ 20,000 or more; what is a couple grand difference going to matter? I could understand if we were talking about a single 115 on an 18' skiff, but these are big money boats. They're not "Cost focused". However, my point was when you're talking about a triple-screw, 36 footer, an extra 600 pounds IS a big issue when you want your boat to be the first one to the fishin' hole.
@dslandrey Oh, and one more thing... If you got the 300 yamaha, you would save about 238 pounds per motor over the V-8 350... And I'm sure it costs a bit less than the V-8, too.
can someone give me a honest answer on how these guys shift? I have heard horror stories about shifting and steering whine? but i kinda want em, so give me a reason to...... These or Verado 300s?
ive seen a charter boat at the harbor where i live with triple 350s. i was amazed cuz at the time i didnt know they made 350s. ive never seen it run though.
@largemouthbassrigs Yamaha's are good engines period. Whether it's fresh water or salt. They make dang good fresh water engines as well. Specially since everyone is going 4 stroke.
man i just ordered my first 4 stroke,, a 115 suzuki,, i saw these V8s at the boat show,, and they are HUGE,,, they DWARF me, and im 6 foot, 185lbs,, they made me look like i was 12 years old,, nice rigs,, but they are heavy,,
you're just a mercury fanboy... actually the verado sci is weighing aroun 681lbs to the yamaha's 801lbs.. verados are still not as efficient as yamahas
Actually I'm a certified marine technician, not a "mercury fanboy." And by your numbers, the Verado still weighs 120 lbs less than that mooring anchor Yamaha.
Here's two identical boats. One with twin 350 Yamahas, the other with twin 300 Verados.
Dispite the Yamaha's 100 horsepower advantage, look what happens. More efficient my ass. Not to mention the Yamaha shifts like SHIT.
referring to comment #505197. Some people have a little info and think they know a lot. MOST people know about HP to weight ratio and it's impact on performance. This guy obviously didn't read that brochure. Also, I spoke with Merc representative at the Atlantic City Boat Show, he states the new optimax is cleaner the the 4 strokes, and if your talking about weight vs. efficiecy, I believe it. ALL 4 strokes are MUCH heavier then 2 strokes, so you really have to look at the big picture.
Hey 505, you're obviously misinformed. Two strokes aren't going anywhere. The Mercury Opti Max gets excellent fuel economy and puts out very little in the way of pollutants. I'll stick with my twin 2 stroke mercury Pro Maxes. They'll run circles around anything four stroke that is out there.
Two strokes are polluting slobbering pos design , I've always been amaized they run frankly LOL . I had a short stint for a year workin on OMC during the Ficht insanity . Dumbass 2 stroker mechanics seemed to think they were workin on the most sophisicated engines on earth , what a hoot . Fourstroker for ever , damn 2 litre Honda 2000 makes 240 Hp , and probably would use half the fuel .
Hey canoepaddler , I know more about engines then you ever will , two strokes made some power , but where the hell are they now ? I shudder to think of what the BSFC is on one , and I've dynoed my share of outboards . I'vew seen big custom injection Mercs on Allison hulls blister the water , and what a friggin waste of time and money , how the hell can you get 20 grand into a power head , no cam no valves no springs , just pistons and flap valves , real high tech there for ya
By the way it's Canoetaco, and how is it you know more about engines than I ever will? That statement itself is as idiotic as your previous post, but for someone of your vast knowledge on engines why waste my time trying to explain shit to you, you probably would not be able to comprehend.
we got off to a bad start . I own a shop and am 57 , still own three stock cars , two dirt , have a couple of bikes , build racing heads and carbs . Auto elec and diag is the bidness . Look at the Busa engine , 1400CC and about 190 hp , not a large engine , probably lighter then the V6 2 stroke add a turbo and it's about 275 , small light package . Rotory is 2strk , tiny package , suprised no one is doing one , a 3 rotor stack and what an engine it'd make . not as efficent as 4 stk , too bad
Sorry chaps a 5.3 litre V8 that puts out 350 HP best check the 327 CID Chev V8 or even the 4 Litre OMC 2 strokes. This things ways a tonne. Dont forget the .5 lbs of fuel per HP hour. The OMC Cross Flow 115/140 V4's in the mid/late 80's did beat this. Best remember also the Turbo Compound R3350's and the Turbo supercharged R 4360"s frpm yhe mid 1950's for low fuel consumption.
I am a Scarab dealer. We just had our annual dealer meeting in Sarasota, Florida. They had a Scarab 35 Sport with twin F350's on the back. HOLY SHIT! How lucky for me my clients were there to physically splash the boat. I will consult all of my clients to forget trip Yama's and go bigger with twin F350's. Great technology.
i dont think so 4 strokes have alot more moving parts such as belts pulls camshafte ect.2 strokes have noun of that.If thoes parts arent there they just cant break down
Yeah for the comment OMC V8's where magnificent. Perhaps with a Stratocruiser full o cash BRP will revive and put the heavilyu modified Ficht system on. Luv my looper 225, prefer my crossflow 235.

Yamaha 350hp V-8 804 lbs.X3 = 2412 lbs.
Mercury Verado 350hp I-6 667 lbs.X3 = 2001 lbs.
Suzuki 300hp V-6 604 lbs.X3 = 1812 lbs.
Evinrude E-Tec 300hp V-6 528 lbs.X3 = 1584 lbs.
