The samurai were warriors - they understood a effective weapon when they saw it. The popular katana traces it's origin to a time of relative peace after the warring states era, it's a weapon for personal defense and a status symbol - not a weapon of war.
@tjakal The katana is very much a weapon of war and has been used for hundreds of years in Japan. The katana you are talking about during the Tokugawa era shrunk a bit and became more of a finess weapon when armor was not as heavily used.

And even then heavier, larger swords more suitable to take on armored combatants where mostly used, called 'tachi' in modern literature. Mainstay battlefield weapons for armored samurai was large pole-arms, like the Yari and the more unusual but well known naginata - not something you'd bring to a civilian tea ceremony.

Samurai knew even plain iron armour would stop a katana, which is why they aimed for vulnerable points - check out "Way of the Warrior - Way of the Samurai [2/4]" by Akab6 on Youtube. Yoroi-toshi daggers, sankaku yari spears etc all suggest specialist methods were needed to penetrate armour.
Imported namban armours were worn by wealthy samurai as well, suggesting western armour was not inferior.
@mklpa123 I never get why people believe samurai would be more skilled. Knights began their training from childhood as well, and if you actually look at medieval swordsmanship (or grappling, or dagger work, or pollaxe) the techniques were just as sophisticated.

I really just based my opinion on weaponry vs armor. iron plated armor, on top of chain mail is probably going to stop the majority of blows from a well made katana or naginata. where as a claymore/poleaxe/hammer/mace/flail/hammer etc is going to inflict some massive damage to a samurais armor, since they are blunt crushing weapons. and thats not even taking a well made shield into account.

Samurai did have a few anti-armour weapons like yoroi-toshi (a type of dagger), tetsubo (staff/mace) or sankaku yari (triangle spear/estoc), but generally a pollaxe would have an advantage.
