This camera sounds great from a high ISO and color/dynamic range perspective, but the Canon 7D is much better as far as ergonomics and menus. On the 7D everything can easily be done while keeping your eye in the viewfinder, including changing the Autofocus issue you mentioned. Picture quality is better on the D7000, ergonomics are better on the 7D. For portrait photography the D7000 wins, for action, outdoor and unexpected scenes, the 7D wins.
lol. i had the same problem with the focus thing you had on the end in the video :P I have the camera for a week or 2, and still didn't found it till i search for it on the internet :P
Peter, a video very well done. I have been seriously considering this camera but when you said you actually had to look at the owner's manual, it was the deal breaker for me. Real men never read instruction manuals. Joking, of course. I'm just an photo enthusiast and almost never do videos. The built in intervalometer is an important feature for me because I love to dabble in time lapse shots.
hey peter, it´s more than a year since you upload this videos. how good has the camera been since then? I´m really interested in buying that but read somewhere about some focusing issues, specially when using third part lenses. can you please tell me stg about it?
thank u man , that was a nice review ,i have this great cam and i love it but i have a question when i put the on camera flash using the manual settings ,the metering still want me to slow down the shutter speed to get the right exposure any suggestions for a good indoor shooting like portraits or weddings ,and what lens works the best with this camera ? thank u so much
The peski secret button for changing auto focus pattern doesn't need to be held in. The function holds for about 3 secs or until one finishes using the command dial to change settings. to Hold it in is infact difficult when a heavy lense attached.
You are doing a great job, but you have spent way to much time repeating the microphone plug story. It's half the video. glasses on glasses off, repeat
@JediMichael2003 High shutter speed or capturing high-speed objects? It CAN capture high-speed video, but it can look like it's skipping around and it still has noticeable rolling shutter. If you are looking for a camera for video I'd direct you towards the new Nikon D5100 or a Canon DSLR. I believe there are some Canon mid-grade DSLR's that can capture up to 60fps. One downfall: Nikon camera movie modes can last as long as 20 minutes whereas I believe Canons are limited to 12-15 minutes.
I appreciate this review, I think it would be more practical for me as a student photographer to get this camera and go with Nikon. I've been juggling whether or not I should pay the extra price for a canon 7D but understanding the price of electronics and how the numbers go down and how new models come out then this would be best. I'm getting this camera because I want a picture/photo specific camera that can do it all that is also cost efficient.
I've had the same problem with other adapters being too large and have fixed the "problem" by trimming the rubber/plastic with a pocket knife. Just take it slow, dont vut yourself and it can be cured.
First time seeing your vids, excellent job man. You're real, I'm real, it's all works. The one thing you might have forgot to mention is the lack of a swiveling screen. For that reason alone I was considering the Canon 60D. For me, the static screen is a HUGE negative as far as flexibility is concerned. Your video did however help me to feel a lot better about my decision.
Hello I love your videos I wanted to ask do no where to get a Nikon D7000 real cheap I looked everywhere but no luck :( ples help I just don't have 1199$ all of my money just go to my rent I'm saving up I have about 600$ srry I think I'm just going to quit life is so hard I'm make like 7.46 H it's just so hard :..(
@Marker1229 It's a newer release, so you probably won't find it cheaper if you want it brand new. You can avoid paying tax if you buy online and some dealers offer free shipping. If you're lucky, you might can find someone selling theirs for a few 100 dollars off in the newspaper or craigslist.
@Azure0080FF Yes, I must have been very stupid to take a phrase like "you myst be a redneck american" as prejudiced. Until you learn to think before saying stupid shit like that, I would prefer to just drop the argument completely. There are very few things that piss me off more than prejudice and negative stereotypes.
@Azure0080FF Wow you are a very prejudiced idiot. I am an American, but I am FAR from being a redneck. If you are so ignorant and racist that you feel the need to turn something as trivial as the pronunciation of a camera brand into a rant about how stupid and egocentric you think Americans are, then I have nothing more to say to you.
Why the hell every where i look all these europeeons complaining about how Americans pronounce the word (Nikon) Neekon, Nyekon same shit they are damn good brand of cameras thats what its all about.
@Azure0080FF No, it's more like calling you stupid. If Nikon wasn't meant to be pronounced "nye-conn" (as you put it), they wouldn't pronounce it that way in their commercials.
Hi, I've been saving up for this camera, then im gonna be buying this very soon, what would be the best recommended lens for portrait for D7000? I'm looking at Nikkor 24-70mm, but it's for FX camera. Would the quality be compromise of the conversion something? Or should i go for 17-55mm which is also a pro lens but for DX camera. I wanted to have zoom pro lens, but not the 70-200mm vr II yet. pls reply
I don't know why people are obsessing about shallow DoF video. Most will get too frustrated with it to use it beyond dabbling. It's just not a practical proposition for amateurs. Unless you're mostly shooting static scened from a tripod (which amateur videographers almost never are), shooting video with a DSLR is extremely challenging.
that microphone issue is definitely a deal breaker for me. I am looking at the Canon 60D or this one and between the swivel screen and the video plug in mic hole, it seems like the 60D is better for my needs. I will be using it for video, but my mom is going to split the cost with me because she wants a great quality digital photo camera.
Well maybe you should learn how to use it, maybe a few class on photographic technique. I just got that Nikon D7000, It's an awsome piece of equipement.
@atomas59 I never say that D7000 it is not a good camera. the only thing i dont like it. it is not good for action photography because it is only has a small buffer. u can test by yourself put u camera on Ch and keep press shutter button an
@MrFrankdole 550d is very vad on pictures quality i had it when u zoom in u feel like u took pic with a phone camera , i returned it the same day , not sure about 7D but D7000 has awesome pics for real , even D90
Thanks for taking the time and sharing your expertise. I found the D7000 video footage less garish than the Canon T2i. Excellent review and nil illegitimi carborundum.
on the constructive criticism side, way too much trying to be funny and chatty, it wastes time, id prefer to hear about the camera than "look how cute I am" comments. Also waaay to long talking about single things, like the friggin audio jack issue.
The Nikon D7000 is a great body, but NOT better than the Canon 7D. I own both and the only thing that I REALLY like better about the D7000 is the price.
WOW! The video does the look a bit the same... I couldn't tell if you really changed or not.
I guess the Canon T2i is no joke! Totally awesome.
Now, did you list the microphone you are using? Also, if you a recording 3 people who is singing and dancing on stage, how do get the lens to stay focus? Also, the motor of the lens is very noisy!
@markd514 ok fair enough, i had the d90 before and it is a excellent camera and still sets the benchmark though for the beginning of the revolution in hd video in dslr cameras, and still to this day has a better review rating than the d7000, but boy i do like this and may get this in like.......6.5 hrs
buy a second plug and shave it off evenly where it does not completely remove the insulation around the headphone/mic jack and it should solve the problem. just replicate the surroundings of the hole plug in the camera.
Very nice job, just one point: one of your minuses is the audio input is off center, however, there are two imputs, one for audio, one for GPS. Is it possible that your camera is one of the very first batches that didn't have the GPS input? With the GPS input the two inputs are centered.......great post though.
This camera sounds great from a high ISO and color/dynamic range perspective, but the Canon 7D is much better as far as ergonomics and menus. On the 7D everything can easily be done while keeping your eye in the viewfinder, including changing the Autofocus issue you mentioned. In this mode the maximum exposure time is 1/30s and it doesnt show you any difference in the final picture to come when changing the exposure.

Very good insight, outstanding review. You break down the information and perspective on the camera in a very useful way.

i will disagree with this pro, this camera is not a d90 upgrade as the d90 will continue to appear within the nikon range

@atyl1972
wrong-the d90 is now obsolete
markd514 1 year ago
@markd514 no you're wrong cos nikon are still selling this camera alongside the d7000, get your facts right before you comment

@atyl1972
The d90 is obsolete to ME. They may very certainly be selling it, which is fine. That is not the point I was making
markd514 1 year ago
@markd514 ok fair enough, i had the d90 before and it is a excellent camera and still sets the benchmark though for the beginning of the revolution in hd video in dslr cameras, and still to this day has a better review rating than the d7000, but boy i do like this and may get this in like.......6.5 hrs

Thank you very much for your great review. I like it more than others.

buy a second plug and shave it off evenly where it does not completely remove the insulation around the headphone/mic jack and it should solve the problem. just replicate the surroundings of the hole plug in the camera.
good luck.

Very nice job, just one point: one of your minuses is the audio input is off center, however, there are two imputs, one for audio, one for GPS. Is it possible that your camera is one of the very first batches that didn't have the GPS input? With the GPS input the two inputs are centered.......great post though.
