Yeah, definitely different from aphex twin. His stuff is much more repetitive, more like regular dance/trance music just that it has similar sounds to this music, while this music has a must more diverse, complex structure--this makes Autechre more difficult to follow for those who are not very musically inclined, but those who can usually prefer this.
um, no. both have long and diverse careers and neither one leans in either direction when you look at them in their entirety. listen to the hangable auto bulb ep or drukqs or richard d james album.
Actually, in the past few weeks I have listened to a lot more Aphex Twin (only had heard a small amount of his stuff before that), and I agree that my previous comment wasn't really right. Aphex Twin does a few songs that are like what I said but in general his structure takes on its own unique characteristics just like Autechre's
i wud luv 2 watch this in a cinema...on a massive screen with EVIL bass and dark room except 4 the crazy flashing images of this song...and come to daddy by aphex twins come to think of it
@De50lat0r i did it , not to this video but to many others of cunningham, during the show of his DVD on a local cinem. WHen come to daddy was playing i got goosebumps of pleausre
I know there are two versions of the video for this song. I kinda like the one with the alien-thing in it better, but Chris apparently didn't like that version and re-edited it (this version is the one on the DVD of Chris's work.) Very awesome song.
AFX I don't honestly think is as good as Autechre. Both are pioneers and leaders in experimental/IDM but I think Autechre has more going on I guess I could say. I still like Aphex Twin but yea, just saying.
I used to own this in vinyl and play it at a slower pace. The result was an industrial mayhem. true Robot factory atmosphere. On side B was an amazing ambient title : second peng, really far out when played in slow-mo, and a must when it comes to sonic landscape creation.
Autechre.. This is really good electronic music for me, far above my understanding. Just love to rely on "Pyr" and stuff alike. And cunningham is also a supersumo on his own. thank you for posting :D

OH! I'm so sorry I've offended your sensibilities!! Poor baby! Look, I've been listening to avaunt garde music since it was called "electronic music" back in the 1960's. Yes, this is a pretty interesting piece, but it's done more with programming talent and production effects than with (what I'd call) musical talent. And, yes, ANYONE can make a piece like this with a sequencer and some practice. Try it yourself. please.
"Look, I've been listening to avaunt garde music since it was called "electronic music" SO WHAT! that only means your old and apparently stupid to,
to think that autechre are only using a sequencers and a little programming...ill have you know that autechre have been pioneering this genre since late 80's. This attitude is deffenetly what's wrong with people's view's of art today...
people like you think that just because you have a pc that has the capability to make this kind of video's and music you think you also do...you know that your cell phone has more processing power than the computers at nasa when they landed on the moon!! (when you where so great listening to electronic music back in the 60's) maybe you should go fly to the moon? go play with your guitar idiot!
I agree, there are millions of guitars out there, all you have to do is buy one and you sound better than your favorite guitarist.
Yes, it is a lot of 'programming' but what would you call any composition but programming? Bach 'programmed' on pieces of paper and then other machines (called classical musicians haha) played it back.
Then perhaps no composer has what you would call 'musical talent' since they usually can't play the instruments they write for as well as the performers who play it.
Actually, (like most famous composers), Bach was a virtuoso on his primary instrument, (organ). Technically speaking, composers could infact play the instrument they wrote for very well.
Artistically speaking, would anyone have a better understanding of what the music was about than the person who composed it? They must play it well in that sense too, no?
Well, you know, any music genre has it's stars and fans. It's just that some has more depth to it than others, some listen to music just for listening to music's sake. Some, like Autechre or Aphex fans, it's sometimes an alternate mentality, but for some it's still just for listening. I can see why someone could come across this type of music and not understand it. Autechre is exactly that "programming" and they're talented at it. Much the same way someone could be called "talented" at guitar.
Composing music like this is a different talent than playing an instrument, this shares more similarities with painting and writing as you are setting down ideas rather than performing/expressing them at the time they are heard.
Very tru'; painting but on a much higher degree. The elements are much more complex. With painting, what you're doing is manipulating atmosphere, color and what not... but with music you're manipulating atmosphere since it's with sound waves, and you're also manipulating time. It's quite amazing.
why is everyone getting so uptight about genre's, although i always hated the term "intelligent dance music", too pretentious for me. autechre have so many different styles it's impossible to nail them down to one genre, but if i had to i'd say they were "dirty funky breaks on a rasta tip, bad ass urban beats for generation x", look for that section in hmv. thank god for warp
come on man i was being sarcastic, i've have enough of people bitching about defining artists when we should really all just be grateful that people like autechre still make innovative music. you have no sense of humor and you like electronic music, are you german by any chance?
No. Same country as you, apparently. Unfortunately, sarcasm really doesn't work in text, particularly nor with such a po-faced comment as yours. And it was a pretty pretentious thing to say, though I in no way think pretension is a bad thing. Perhaps I ought to have put a smiley at the end of my comment. Also, 'humour'. [/pedant]
oooooooooooh get you! time of the month? what does "particularly nor" mean? are you having problems with your spelling too? although i do apologise for using an american spelling, its my new mac.
u. obviously it has a u key but it highlights spelling "mistakes" so humour is considered a mistake. dont know about you but i'm starting to feel a bit guilty that we're both sitting in on a friday night posting comments about autechre videos, i'm going for a pint. check out harmonic 33
no u start argueing around after telling us so much of your intelligent thoghts. letzt just be greatful to be connected by their innovative music... im from germany by the way.. ;)
After sifting through 100 of IDM vs EBM comments.. Phew..!
I wanted to know more about the making of, since Chris C. was "only" 25 at the time of making, and some parts look so CG/3d. But this was an actual model built for the video?
i may be in the minority, but so is chris crocker. anyway, autechre are really pushing the evolution of music. i think these guys are way out there plotting new sonic territory. excellent!
base, guitar make me think of bloc party remixed, or a night in the orange club (Uk) tripping in the 90s. The videos too visually abstract i.e. can't make sod all out. Wihtout base and without altered perception I cannot see or hear whats exciting about this. Subliminal aeroplanes/ insects and robots.Prag yours is better honestly just came from there.
Always found that video more scary than purpose, asd. Love the other version more.

Your Mac doesn't have a 'u' key? And now we see why these comments are a terrible means of communication. I admit I'm an awful typist.
RedlineAngel 4 years ago

autechre is awesome, and why does the description say it's a "techno" group, there's nothing techno about this.

chris cunningham made the roboinsect for stanley kubricks A.I movie. i think it would have been slightly cooler than the spielberg version.

After sifting through 100 of IDM vs EBM comments.. Phew..!
I wanted to know more about the making of, since Chris C. was "only" 25 at the time of making, and some parts look so CG/3d. But this was an actual model built for the video?
Know where I can find out more?

Why can't people actually discuss music anymore rather than go on about empty genre classifications?
moonlemon09 4 years ago 2
This video is not art. It is subconscious. I don't believe they go for "art". FWAP.

i may be in the minority, but so is chris crocker. anyway, autechre are really pushing the evolution of music. i think these guys are way out there plotting new sonic territory. excellent!

Second Bad Vibel was one of Chris Cunninghams first music videos. But more importantly one where his vision began to creep into them.

base, guitar make me think of bloc party remixed, or a night in the orange club (Uk) tripping in the 90s. The videos too visually abstract i.e. can't make sod all out. Wihtout base and without altered perception I cannot see or hear whats exciting about this. Subliminal aeroplanes/ insects and robots.Prag yours is better honestly just came from there.
