  • this is the song that made me play gamba

    THANKS

  • Sounds great indeed, first time I really like the da gamba sound, mellow and clear as well. Nice chant as well.

  • I just saw her perform this song last weekend

  • What a lovely melody. It has medieval sounds. what is this Chanty??

  • Sea Shanties, or chanties, were sung by seamen through the ages and passed down from generation to generation. Sometimes they are accompanied by instruments.

  • Such an awsome instrument, anyone know what clef it plays in, and what strings it has?

  • From the bottom, strings are tuned AA, D, G, c, e, a, d1. the bottom three are gut wound in silver, the top 4 are open, twisted and polished gut.

viol music is written in many clefs - treble, treble an octove down, alto, tenor, and bass are the most normal, but there is baritone clef and soprano clef as well.

  • Is that a tenor or a bass viol?

  • bass viol

  • It's a bass viol. Prototype of the "Contra-Bass" or in English "Bowed Double-Bass"

  • Have anybody noticed the sweet longing thing from 00.55 - 01.07? (of course you have) Very untraditional - very modern.

  • I just love the name of the instrument but i perfer my celli

  • too beautiful sound.

I really love the sound of viola da gamba.

  • Chanty is sailorman-song. Otherwise, great job, well done.

  • Lovely sound of that VdG!

  • That was beautiful. What is a Chanty?

  • Is that a bass viol?

That piece for some reason sounds sooooo English. I guess cause it was written by a brit.

It would be really cool if you could play "the Spirit of Gambo" by Tomas Humes. That's my favorite English tune.

  • great tone!

  • Please add more videos of your playing. I love this. Is the music available? I was also wondering whether this piece could be played on a six stringed bass gamba.

  • Well Im a violist and even though my instrument is a far cousin of the da gamba, I still love its sound....

  • A lovely little ditty on the Gamba. I too am a cellist and in the last four years have had the chance to listen to a lot of gamba music. In some sense I am sad that many years ago, when I was taking up an instrument, the gamba was not as widely played as it is now.

  • A lovely sound indeed, but a viola da gamba has nothing to do with a cello. They're totally different. The viol's main opponent was the violin in the Baroque Era. Viols are played in consort from Soprano (Dessus), to the famous bass viol. Marin Marais and Mr. de Saint-Colombe were among those who created an amazing music repertoire for this instrument.

  • True, very true. What I ment to say was as a cellist, I am interested in instraments such as the viola da gamba because they are distant cousins of each other... lol

Have you seen the movie All the Mornings of the World (Tous les matins du monde)? It's a movie about Sainte Colombe. It's very beautiful. And in french! yay french.

  • one of the best sounds that can come out from an instrument...i don't really like the song but the sound is amazing....i think i prefer violin though...

  • Lovely.
