I love, love, love Abecedarians. I wish they had made so many more songs/albums. I have never heard this song. Thank you so much! I think it's great that you've made these cool videos to such a great band.
What a pleasure to stumble across this gem. I've always considered Smiling Monarchs a masterpiece, and this one here, though not as strong, deserves to be remembered for decades to come.
I was walking my dogs just a bit ago and found myself singing this song, feeling nostalgic I suppose. I cannot play Scream anymore (no record player) but here you were with this song that got me through a few break ups and a lot of screw ups. I heard a rumor that Chris Manecke was going to re-release everything on CD, but it seems that was only a rumor. Thank you for recognizing one of the best bands I have ever heard and putting this here for the idiot too cheap to buy a new record player.
This band never made it in the States. I saw them open for New Order back in 1985 @ Irvine Meadows. They were brilliant. I wish they had better success over here.
Holy Crap! I saw New Order at the Irvine Meadows amphitheater in 85. If remember correctly they had something like four opening bands and when New Order finally hit they stage they played for only a half an hour. I just didn't remember the Abecedarians being one of the opening bands. Wish I had recognized their greatness back then but hey, I was 16 and thought I knew everything.
I think I was at that gig, too. The other bands were Durutti Column and the Fall, I think. Don't emember Abecedarians playing, though. I saw them play with the Wolfgang Press in some smaller LA club, can't remember which.
That's the problem...because "Smiling Monarchs" was released as part of the "Hardest Hits" series, most people think of them in terms of the one song...that's actually the only song where they used synthesized sound. The rest of their music is pretty minimalistic..and very good, in my opinion.
They deserve exposure. They also deserve for their songs to be re-released on CD (at a realistic price) for fans (new and old) to purchase. Thank you for posting.
Beautiful; nice job Miss Parker. You did total justice to this song.

one of the greatest, most underrated, underappreciated bands of the 80's. so far ahead of their time that it still sounds relevant today...

great video! how long were they part of factory for?

Thank you. They were with Factory for about a year - long enough to make and release Smiling Monarchs (1985).
