  • I know it's being aired in the UK. I watched it on BT vision on demand. But does anyone know when it will be released to buy in the UK amazon only have region 1.

  • @MRaverz its in the uk now

  • triple rainbow at 0:25, ha

  • Does anyone else find that the sound is a little weird?

  • what times it on, and is it on discovery chanal, and when does it start if not already? or has it already finished?

  • wtf? it played 18 seconds of the video, then the advertisement, then played the rest of the video... lol

  • @ihave1dollars I haven't seen an ad since I started using Firefox with the ad block plus add-on.

  • @TheCraich i usually don't see them, i use adblock for chrome but i guess they changed the ad coding a little so now it doesn't catch it.

  • I love how all the shots of asteroids have them coming in so slowly, in Bill Bryson's a Short History of Absolutely Everything he points out that it would take an asteroid over a km long a second or less to go through the atmosphere and hit the earth. Everyone at ground zero would be dead before they even knew what happened. I hope he brings that up or makes a counter-argument.

  • @LunaticFringe20 It's a 'Short History of Nearly Everything' my bad.

  • COOOL

  • Phil Plait comes up with mildly clever name for his show and that’s about all - pilfering, rehashing virtually standard info from recent (and better) shows. Phil goes for ride in jet, “gee” haven’t seen that done before…yawn... flamboyant mediocrity. “My new TV show”, “…read my book…” “win a signed copy of my book” and "Definitely want more Phil", "Phil rocks!" “holy crap I can’t wait!” just in first paragraph at Discovery web site for his show. Now who wrote that?

  • @99thmonkee

I see you have your finger off the pulse and have it firmly wedged in your arsehole.

  • this is true, imagine, no one has ever reach the edge of the universe, there are too many planets in the universe.

  • Do I see Ultraman parody?

  • Junk science is a good term for it I guess. Myself I have been using the term "hollywood bullshit science" for this kind of stuff.

  • too bad they only made 2 episodes. it looked like promising show.

  • @ascari12 They're only pilots. Watch them a lot and they may become a full time series.

  • @ascari12 cool cool.

  • The fake is fake the TV is TV. Look at my comment now look at yours now look up now look back down now look up. Solar Maximum will reach it's peak around 2013 this is bad universe. Phil Plait is an astronomer but mainly a star sucker looking for some fame. Now look up now look down now look at my comment now look at yours now tell the truth.

  • Yeah smells like Mass-Extinction!!!

  • This show is dildos

  • Wow is the whole show a cartoon?

  • BTW, you act like you're trying to appeal to little children instead of adults, and your 'show' is condescending and unintelligent, a combination that makes a jackass out of you.

  • @MrConspiracyRealist Wow, from all assholes I've ever seen on the internet, you've got to be the worst by far.

Why don't you chill out for a week? This shit can't be good for your health.

  • @MrConspiracyRealist such theories have been around since the 1800's, so you're either very old, or very ignorant.

  • @MrConspiracyRealist Your "Plait Envy" is showing there bub, very unbecoming.

  • Wait, wait. You mean the Discovery channel is going to "discover" something that isn't a shark or a ghost? /boggle

  • I could totally see a cartoon series based on the last part of this video. "Irradiated by a solar flare caused by aliens, a simple astronomer becomes... The Plait". Anyway, good to see more science on TV, but too bad Discovery seemingly won't touch anything if it doesn't have that Myth Busters "we made an experiment with stuff and wore hard hats" side to it. I wonder if that's the way to go in inspiring new generations of scientists, or if we're doing a disservice to them.

  • Yay for Sleep Deprived Productions and Adam Benson!!!!

  • double rainbow at 0:23

  • @iOhadRubin rofl

  • @iOhadRubin HAHAHA Epic shit

  • @iOhadRubin OMG a second later it started to look like a triple rainbow!

  • SWEEEEEET. I hope this really takes of for both mine and Phil's sake

  • This show looks cool! Its like Mythbusters... IIIIIIIINNNNNN SSSPPPAAACCCEEEE!!!!!!!

  • oh the bad astronomer,

    I love his podcast...

  • I love the trailer I hate that I missed the first episode!

  • :24 seconds in... Whooah! Double Rainbow! It's becoming a triple rainbow!

  • Wow. Congrats Phil. I think this is a winner. I really enjoyed watching every minute.

  • Yeah, just watched the asteroid episode. This series sucks hard. Phil is annoying, every "test" is crap and all the "knowledge" can be found at some time or another on the back of a Count Chocula box. NOT GOOD. unless you're 7. This is a good show for grade school students. It's like Bill Nye with shitty internet lingo and crap attempts to prove something. I hate it. So much. Not for adults.

  • @bedofrazorsqwerty This was way better than Mythbusters in my opinion. Whatever. I think a micro asteroid hit your brain.

  • Mythbuster wannabe series.

    I'm Gonna Be Sick !

  • @Modruz You obviously don't know who this man is. Give it a chance, I'm sure you will love it. Unless you are a christian.

  • @Modruz Way better than Myth Busters.

  • I always love how idiots lump christians into the same pile as muslims, because Christians are running around blowing up people who draw cartoons of jesus btw im not Christian so say whatever you like about it I just think its such a copout

  • @MrAwesomesauce2

They do that because it is easier to broad brush than look at facts, I guess that's why they're watching this nonsense. I'm not too keen on religion either, but this show doesn't make a great case for scientific inquiry; and as explained by Gould, aren't explicitly opposed to one another.

  • @MrAwesomesauce2

Christians aren't that far removed from razing Jewish villages and setting each other on fire over trivial doctrinal disputes.

They've got no right to throw stones at Muslims for doing the same crap they were still doing just a few generations ago.

  • i see the ep1 it was good wene u say fall oct right ?

  • what did you use 24kbs for audio

at least the video was good looks like an interesting program

  • hehe that cartoon figure of you phil is unmistakable =)

  • It looks like the bastard child of Good Eats & Mythbusters and I can't wait!

  • more like Bad Ass Universe

  • Is there a minoe extinction ? lol

  • 0:23 WHAT DOES IT MEAN?! (Thumbs up if you get it.) :D

  • @magog1138 It almost looks like a triple rainbow...

  • Looks awesome ! I am looking forward to see that !!

  • I'm sure i've seen several shows do this same stuff before, but if you follow through with the promise of huge explosions then i'll definitely tune in.

  • The show airs Auguest 29th at 10 PM, according to Phil.

  • This is going to be my new fave show.

  • i like him alot i follow him on twitter too

  • I hope this airs before the GRB gets us. ;-) I can't wait to watch the BA do his thing.

  • Amazing!!!

  • I see now why phil plait resigned his presidency of the JREF. Awsome!!! I can't wait.

  • Good work, Discovery. The Bad Astronomer is awesome and I will totally watch this show… assuming you don't put it on the schedule while I'm at work. Then you'd better put episodes on your Web site so I don't miss out. A DVD deal wouldn't be bad, either. In fact, can you just make a whole channel full of this stuff?

  • shoot a nuke at it

  • The universe hates our freedoms and way of life. We need to declare war on the universe and launch a preemptive strike.

  • Expecting your show and wish you the best. Education is knowing something for application of someone's upliftment and survival. You may learn something which may take a littlle burden out of your shoulder in a future unknown, should your common sense urge you to do so.

  • Will it debunk Nassim Haramein too?

  • A real scientist who is familiar with popularising his field, it's always good to see this type of progress in the media. I'm looking forward to the show.

  • What's with the crappy audio?...

  • @adnausium stfu, who cares. you're spoiled. it's called compression, and not all videos are without it.

  • @Euph420 Anyone who takes pride in there work, would not what their audio to sound like that...and there is no reason for it to sound like that. This is the official Discovery YouTube video channel, quality is expected from us and from the corporation...someone messed up and it should have been fixed promptly. That is all.

  • @Euph420 I care.

  • dont worry doctor who will save us !

  • i love discovery channel but all the good sows come on without repeats. so in the middle of the day i cant watch things like this, man vs wild even if its staged, and other good shows.

  • @PenultimateRun Uh, Phil Plait has never said there's no such thing as aliens. But, like anyone who actually understands the standards of evidence real science requires, he's well aware that there is not one shred of decent evidence that alien life has approached earth.

  • im not big on shows that feed on fear (even just a little bit of fear) but I wanna see this anyway

  • 66,666 views!? 0.o

  • @vo117man Not anymore heheh

  • 66,666

    views

  • 10 "people" are Aliens or Meteorites

  • OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG This is awesome, Discovery Channel FTW !!!

  • So... Ex... Cit.... ed.

  • ohoohoho i'm gonna wanna watch this :D

  • I very much look forward to seeing this series!

  • Looks awesome!

  • Can you get rid of Christianty and Islam while your at it?

    Thanks,

    Peace & Love

  • @oocares lol

  • @oocares completely agree, but take it further no, how about all religions, their simply a plague to humanity. Do agree? look at history... yup

  • @oocares LOL.

  • @oocares good one

as an ex-muslim I would appreciate if that could happen

  • @oocares First off, you used the word "your" incorrectly. In that instance, "you're" would have been appropriate (there IS a difference- one means ownership- your car, your house, etc., and the other means 'you are'). It astounds me how many people don't get this. So your poor grasp of basic grammar gives away your ignorance and detracts from the point you're trying to make. Second, by attacking religion, it's obvious you're just trying to stir up anger, so your immaturity is quite evident.

  • Thumbs up if we should start building safety bunkers NOW

  • i was hoping he would call all of hawkings theories theoretical mumbo jumbo about as testable as the existence of god

im not saying hes retarded, im sure hes very intelligent, but theoretical physics is just that, theoretical

  • @KojachBaumherr Learn the difference between scientific theory and philosophical theory before you go making a fool of yourself by implying that Hawking is wrong. You might want to crack a book on empirical evidence and the scientific method.

  • @KojachBaumherr

And I suspect that you do not have a full grasp of what a theory is. It does not mean the same thing as a 'guess' or even a hypothesis.

    No.

A theory makes predictions that can be falsified - in other words, those predictions might possibly be turn out to be wrong.

If the predictions, time after time, are in accord with evidence, then you have a theory.

I often find that (curiously, mostly Americans) seem to think that a theory is a guess. Odd that.

  • WOAH TRIPPLE RAINBOW

  • Phil Plait ? hes a douche-bag!

  • Mythbusters in spaceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Great, thanks discovery! Another show showing us how the earth is going to be destroyed by big explosions and everyone is going to die! Fuck sake, im so sick of this childish explosion crap! There is so much beauty in the world and the only thing these networks make shows about is how we are all going to be destroyed.

  • @ElectricalNoises

Unfortunately if you don't have explosions you won't have many viewers, which is an incredibly sad truth for all the Discovery-like channels. I have high hopes for this, since I'm hoping that unlike Mythbusters and similar shows this will have an actual HARD SCIENCE angle which will make it believable at least. This guy is an astronomer, not a special effects guy.

  • @ElectricalNoises Thanks YouTube, for another ignorant comment from someone who clearly doesn't know who Phil Plait is, or what the nature of this show is going to be. If you actually read a bit about the people involved, you'd realize this show is going to be a lot more about debunking bullshit than promoting it.

  • Do it like they do on the discovery channel

  • this shows gonna force us to donate shit just to 'save our lives' from the meteors that doesn't exist and they're gonna use all the money on cocaine.

  • @TomFuIp And prostitutes! Don't forget the prostitutes! Yeah, I know what you mean. All that crap about being round and not being in the center of the Universe. What the hell do those science guys know anyway, right?

  • The safest way to avoid an asteroid collision, is not to blow it up, but in fact to simply move it off course.

  • @Lostsolider I'm skeptical whether moving an astroid to change it's course is as simply as you suggest.

  • @aGuy i never said it was simple, I am just saying its the safest way to get rid of an asteroid.

  • I hate these series where they imitate something they have no clue how it woukd be if it actually would happen.

  • @beautifulday01 uhh it is actually possible to simulate an asteroid hitting earth, but not with the math you learned before you dropped out in 6th grade

  • @beautifulday01 it's amazing that you don't see the irony in that retarded statement you just made. "they imitate something they have no clue how it worked." maybe that's why they are trying to imitate it in the 1st place because they don't know. although imitate isn't the best word choice.

  • @beautifulday01 Uh, what? Phil Plait is actually a well respected astronomer, and well known for his debunking of stupid bullshit. I think we can safely say that the science on this show will be well represented.

  • lol mass extinction is too easy for mankind that has cause such horrendous crimes against other species and themselves... don't you think? alienssssssssss LOL

  • Thumbs up if SMBC (Zach Weiner) sent you here :)

  • Go, Phil, go! I just can't WAIT!

  • Thanks Zach!

  • so nice ....... like to see some 'smart beggars' also . . . help yourself

  • im looking forward to this series

  • Myth Busters 2.0? Where's Jamie? lol

  • This could be good.

  • Asteroid? Chuck Norris on a Titan II Missle

  • I'm psyched. I've been reading BA for years now and I'd love to see this.

  • It's strange that while advertising a show about debunking sensationalized science they keep saying "it can be deadly!" and "it might just save your life!" Seems kind of hypocritical.

  • Thumbs up if Gizmodo sent you here!

  • this remind anyone else of mythbusters?

  • awesome

  • YouTube people: Why do you even have a HD version of the videos if your servers are incapable of streaming them in realtime?

Your player is gradually becoming the biggest piece of garbage on the internet. Instead of clever sound buttons, fix your streaming so it actually works and doesn't take 30 minutes to load a one minute clip.

  • @macgyver2210 Uh, I have no problems streaming their HD videos. You do realize that when something goes slowly on the internet, the server that is hosting the content is only one of many places that could be slowing things down? It's just as likely one of the many hops along the way, your ISP, or even you computer being too slow to handle the data.

  • Why does it sound so bad?

  • @richardmaudsley77 Sounds like the audio bitrate was way too low when they made the master to upload. All the different resolutions are downscaled from the 1080 upload, so it's one of those 'garbage in, garbage out' things. Show looks cool though.

  • @TVGenius Fair enough, but its weird that sound effects are all completely screwed whereas the speech isn't. You'd think they'd have caught that before exporting the final thing.

  • @richardmaudsley77 True, I noticed that right after posting. That makes it more intriguing...

  • Oh god, the garbling on this video. Is it just me or is the sound all kinds of garbled in all quality levels?

Also, awesomesauce! I need to watch this when it comes up!

  • Death From the Skies was a GREAT book.

Very excited for this guy's show!

  • You americans have to be afraid of everything. "Danger can come from every direction!!" Please...

  • Comment removed

  • Triple rainbow at 0:23!

  • jesus, would it have killed them to bump up the audio quality a little? thatn distortion is terrible.

  • Woohoo!! I can't wait!

  • oh, for this and so many reasons, i DO wish we had cable....or dish...or...something other than antennae but at least some things make it to the internet!thanks for the link, andromedas wake!yay!

  • Phil Plait is awesome.. he reminds me of my old high school physics professor.. just so much energy in this dude..

  • Explosions! Another thing I truly love about Discovery Channel.

  • Skipped to the next available video. One or more videos were no longer available.

  • This is going to be awesome! When does it air?

  • this will be huge :)

  • This is going to be fucking EPIC!

3 cheers for Discovery giving Phil Plait a TV show.

I think that plus Mythbusters more than makes up for those silly ghost shows. Ok, well almost. It does if you don't watch those other ones. Heheh.

  • @reddog22000 This will be so much better than Mythbusters. Plait is a real scientist who actually understands the point of being realistic instead of sensationalizing.

  • @kaimialana That is a good point, but Mythbusters is still pretty amazing. Here's to hoping Bad Universe will be given enough TLC to entrench itself as a permanent fixture along side them.

Judging by the trailer, it looks to be off to a great start as far as production quality goes.

  • @kaimialana Actually, the Mythbusters both understand real science extremely well. However, they've also got to make a TV show that will attract and educated all kinds of viewers. If they made a show that showed in detail how a professional experiment was carried out, it would not have lasted beyond a pilot. They're doing a great job of showing how things are tested, and how to question stupid assumptions, while keeping it understandable and entertaining for children and morons.

  • KILL IT WITH FIRE

  • "My job is to debunk all of the junk science out there, and reveal the truth." Holy shit, talk about an unending task. You might as well calculate the number of angels that can dance on a pinhead... (but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try!)

  • the universe isn t dangerous is it?? we have evolved here (on earth) for billions of years!! don t scare me! plz...

    ; )

  • @kapa1611 O.o

  • when does it start in the uk?

  • That was lovely, young man.

  • Thumbs up if AndromedasWake sent you here!

  • @Farksisten can i give you a thumbs down cause Gizmodo sent me here ?

  • it looks awesome! I can't wait :)

  • This reminds me a little of Mythbusters but Phil Plaith is a smart guy and he's funny I'm sure it will be interesting. This is just in time for 2012. :D

    Go Phil!

  • Michael Shermer must co-host.

  • OMG Discovery is starting an AWESOME show instead of a SHIT one like Deadliest Catch or OMG GHOSTS LOL? FUCK YEAH!

  • Anyone know if this is coming to the UK too? Cant find any info in the link. Infact the link is useless.

  • Ooo, I want to watch now!
