I have so many issues with this musical but it gave us a young Lea Salonga so I ignore the flaws and just listen to her parts. Maybe the writing and casual racism could have been rescued if they had chosen someone other than Bowman who may have one of the least romantic theater voices I've ever heard. I wish there were more recordings with Lea and another Chris.
@terribithiajjls12 I don't know your age or your ethnicity, maybe you are young and never heard about the seedier side of war of war for civillians. There have been various conflicts where the servicemen have left behind a great number of women who were to rear children single handed and left at a social disadvantage thanks to their children being bastards in a legal sense.Maany women were left in Britain and Europe when their American/Canadian lovers went off to fight or returned home.
@TZEITEL10 It was the same story in Vietnam, the composers of this show wrote the story, based on Madame Butterfly,as a result of seeing a photo showing a tearful family watch as the mixed race daughter of a Vietnamese mother is taken against her will to join her American family.
Lets be honest ,the bar girls were just a lay to most of these men,the lyric writer is American and a former soldier so i expect he knows what hes writing about, and the language he uses is their language.
@migrsm I guess you & 78kljk disagree. He wants to delete Moore from the duet & just have Lea sing the whole song. I don't think it'll work so I disagree with him. I think Claire did well in this song. The singers have different singing style & I disagree w/ you. The many times I've seen Lea in a duet, she takes the cake. No less than the two writers, director, and producer of Miss Saigon agree w/ me. But what do they know?
I wish that someone would do a little judicious editing and turn this into a solo for Ms. Salonga. Her performance of it is so fantastic....and it's nearly the perfect song for everyone who has ever lost a love and can't give up the hope that it will return. But I'd give a great deal to hear it turned into a solo....after all, someone did it with "For Good" which is a duet from "Wicked".........
Mr. Cameron Mackintosh, please consider a reunion of Miss Saigon, ala. Les Mis 25. You'll make millions of people very happy. (You'll make millions of dollars too, if that still matters.)
This play brings to my mind a quote from Euripides, "Why is there no mark engraved upon men's bodies by which we could know the true ones from the false ones" If only =/
@RUAmplified But he did (at least in front of her) choose his wife, she asked him (also a song) if he wanted to be with her or him, he basically said he didn't really know himself and in trying to make sense of the mess going on in Vietnam he found Kim and tried to save her but couldn't so it haunted him but he still loved his wife and was going to be with her and offer Kim and Tam monetary support but like H1 said, before he could TRULY decide with Kim being a option, she shot herself.
Was this the end of the first part of the play? I saw it on Broadway almost 20 years ago (high school!), but this song made a great impression on me...and I find it so hard not to mouth the words and make dramatic gestures (and I'm a dude!) even after not hearing it for two decades.
I'm a girl btw despite my name cause I'm using my dads but my dream is to be Kim I'm an ok singer I can hit all her notes but there's 1 problem I'm not Asian so I think my dream won't work but hopefully I can be eponine in the west end XD if I pray real hard
I can NOT watch this without shedding a tear. These two ladies are SO powerful, their love and what they each feel is SO heartfelt - just one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen performed on the stage. Simply Beautiful. Thank You!!
I love that they perform it as a scene from the show - as opposed to just singing the song. Makes it more emotional. Miss Saigon is one of my faves. Thanks for this!
I love this song because both Kim and Ellen require voices that can seriously belt and I love good belting more than anything so hearing to incredible singers belt at the same time is amazing!!!!!!!!!
this is my favorite song from Miss Saigon! :D i watched this in the Philippines when i was really young and i'm watching it again next month here in New Zealand! :D too bad i won't get to see it performed by the original London cast though..
@kudanga it's going to be in nz?! where, when, for how long etc! hahaha - i saw it in melbourne a few years ago - absolutely DESP to go again!! you, kudanga, may well have made my day!! :) x
@catiecop hi! it was showing in Hamilton in June..they'll be showing it in the Civic in Auckland City next year from last week of May up to the 2nd week of June i think. :) it won't be an international cast since they just held the auditions for next year's show here in Auckland last month. but it should still be good :D
"but when moonlight fills my room, i know you are here still." this is too painful to those whose loved ones are gone....from a wonderful voice of lea salonga...
Lea Salonga has a smooth, soft wonderful voice!!! when she sings...i feel like i'm floating in the air. its like she brings me into the Magical world...
Lea Salonga has one of the most beautiful voices to date now that her voice has fully matured into something god-like, but for some reason I just cannot listen to her sing this song after it matured, it just sounds so much less angelic to me and innocent. I wish I could've seen her perform in Miss Saigon at this point in her career
I am sure you sang it well :) Thanks for posting this ruel....this is the best live recording I see of this song with the best duo (Lea and Claire) to play Kim and Ellen.

@TZEITEL10 I'm not sure how that's a response to my disliking the simplistic lyrics and some of the vocals of the main cast.
