I found out yesterday that Frank Oz wasn't actually involved with this sketch physically. He only dubbed the voice later. Grover was being puppeteered by Richard Hunt here.
Ahhh, the aerobic dancing craze of the early 80s. Sweat outfits, headbands...oh yeah. My mom used to teach a class in aerobics back in those days and always played those annoying records that had popular songs with some disembodied voice giving exercise instructions over the music. And let's not forget the infamous Richard Simmons morning show...
What happpened to Betty Lou? She's up front in this sketch, but you do not see her anymore on Sesame Street. A lot of great characters have just gone away.
No, Prairie and Betty both go way back and were around at the same for a while. But Prarie was always a more developed character--Betty Lou was always a minor one. She briefly became more prominent in the late '90s, I think, but now she's not seen at all.
Apparently they've been paired up in some skits, so one doesn't replace the other. But they're both pink 'Anything' muppets, so they're often confused. I guess Betty Lou's just faded into the background.
I really like this song too. Maybe Grover wanted more attention from everyone in the skit and he probably wanted more attention from the audience which is why he would shout "Exercise!" when Betty Lou was the one who was supposed to shout "Exercise!" since she was the one who had the leading role in this skit.
We've seen every character in this song in other sketches. The man with the mustache and the woman in the headband were both in the "Cooperation (Makes it Happen)" number, the blue guy, I believe, is Bruno from "School in the Afternoon", and the little boy has appeared in numerous clips.
this is my most favorite song eva on sesame street ... im only 23 and i havent seen this since the late 80's or what so ... been looking for it ... like the music ... they always have goo music on sesame street !!! thnx for uploading history ....classic
Wow! I remembered this so well I just began to sing along! I haven't seen this since I was a kid! Thanks for bringing back the memories. XDDD! Betty Lou rocked.
Awesome! I remember seeing this one on Sesame Street as a kid! Cool to see Betty Lou again. And I can definitely see the "Let's Get Physical" connection now that I think about it- great tune (but questionable lyrics!)

One part that's stayed in memory with me for years was when Grover yelled "exerCISE!" hitting the last syllable. You're the man, Frank!

This bring back memories when I was in preschool. My teacher used to play this song everyday in class.

It's We are Family right? Can you also post the video where they say Ep Op Exercise?

Wrong. It's "Physical", performed by Olivia Newton-John.

Hmm. I didn't notice, but this skit only has a token monster in it! Sesame Street must have been more discriminating back then! :p

Is Prarie Dawn the replacement muppet for Betty Lou since Betty Lou is not on Sesame Street anymore?

I have been looking for this song for ages - it's AWESOME. Grover steals the show for the whole thing (the way he cries out "Exercise!").

Funny how the backup singers run over Betty Lou after the second verse!
bearcattony 4 years ago
That's hilarious! It's no wonder they used "Betty Lou" as the lead singer, seeing as how she has blonde hair (like Olivia Newton-John).

Not quite as provocative as the video for "Let's Get Physical." And that's probably a good thing!

Betty Lou, another long lost forgotten Sesame Steet character. Also nice hearing Jim Henson as the grey moustached man :)
