first of all....excellent playing, inspiring! and secondly....thank you so very much for helping me find this beautiful track....this bassline is......um.......nope, I can't find any words. great post! :D
Yo, Imma lil 14 yr old musician cat, I love Dilla, I love Don Blackman, and im trying to figure out how to play that Bassline in the beginning, and eventually the entire song,,, any help?????
Great tone and great feel! Thanks for turning me on to a great tune with Sonjohn Johnson playing bass. The only time I've heard him was on Lenny White's Best of Friends album. Any idea what kind of bass he played on that Lenny White album? Those EMG pickups sound great! Are you running those active or passive? w/btc control? Sounds like a Super P Bass! Thanks a lot.
Liking your playing man. Love Don Blackman as well loads of gospel in there. I was a little stuck on gettin the chords on the chorus, did u happen to work them out or just the bassline.
Seriously though, I always wanted to play bass and I was just wishing a few weeks ago that I knew how to play bass so I could play this song (among others).
I bet Barry was a big influence on Stuart Zender formerly from Jamiroquai, I'm hearing a big similarity in tone and overall sound. Exquisite groove my man, keep funkin!!
I have a Model P in my "rock'n'roll" bass. Totally different animal. The Emg is like a solid punch, the dimarzio is all midrange grind. good for different things.
I love and respect all you true musicians out there; you know, the ones that can pick up an instrument and jam, instead of sampling. This message goes out to the true vocalists also; who needs dubbing?
There are people who are more creative with a 300$ sampler than any "true musician" will ever be(and i'm pretty sure Tim can do both ;) Plus,he's not jamming but playing note for note Barry Johnson's (perfect)bass line, except for that tasty pluck at 0:41 that match the drummer's open hihat accent.
Yo dude!! Great work on this. You've got that bass down tight. Heard this for the first time the other week and nearly broke my jaw it dropped so fast. Trying to figure this one out on bass myself and having a hard time. Any chance you have a transcribe, or fancy re-recording it with a close up of the fretboard so's I can try and learn it?
You have a really nice feel - great groove and your timing is solid. You also have good taste in music! Just one thing - it would be even funkier if you drop out on the 16th note on the one in the chorus every so often (like Barry Johnson does on the album). Otherwise, you've done a very tasteful job. Keep it up!
I have to commend you on your bass playing skills to a CLASSIC song! I just started learning how to play bass. You make it look easy! You should do a video of you playing along to "Hearts Desire" by Don Blackman!
Good choice of genre Slikk, funk is feeling and your off to a good start. Let me be the first to say "you got some skills". I have most of these cuts of that release and this one has some complicated time signatures and you are managing them well. Sonjon played with Lenny White (twennynine)w/DB. Checkout MarloweDK. He's been doing this for a year.
Thanks man. But this one doesn't have no complicated time signatures, it's all 4/4 shuffle. I love Lenny White too, the Streamline album is great fusion music (but I think it was marcus miller on bass).
you're a God

very good playing!
but, in the original bassline you can feel a little break on the bassline, I'm not able to say exactly where.. isn't it?
I don't know why I still haven't heard it played in any of the video covers I found here on YT.... what do you think?

Yeah, but watch some SP1200 videos. Those beatmakers are definately jamming cause they make sick ass beats in seconds.
