  • you're a God

  • @MsFunkhead Thanks, but I don't believe in religion ;-)

  • @katasky are you talking @ 2:21? on the original there are two sets of 16th note triplet run with a rest on the down beat

  • Un placer escucharte tocar. Enhorabuena!!!!

  • very good playing!

but, in the original bassline you can feel a little break on the bassline, I'm not able to say exactly where.. isn't it?

I don't know why I still haven't heard it played in any of the video covers I found here on YT.... what do you think?

  • nice tone on that bass, great job

  • this kicked SO much ass!

  • @slikktim;this is great! lovin' this; makes me want2 pull a 'guitar face'! :D

  • first of all....excellent playing, inspiring! and secondly....thank you so very much for helping me find this beautiful track....this bassline is......um.......nope, I can't find any words. great post! :D

  • Slikk Tim is Sick. I cannot believe someone disliked this. We should be able to veto that. lol

  • @Starrchild65 thanks man... let 'em hate !

  • J Dilla sampled this song for Slum Village - Go Ladies

  • @5thElementArts right on

  • Yo, Imma lil 14 yr old musician cat, I love Dilla, I love Don Blackman, and im trying to figure out how to play that Bassline in the beginning, and eventually the entire song,,, any help?????

  • Great tone and great feel! Thanks for turning me on to a great tune with Sonjohn Johnson playing bass. The only time I've heard him was on Lenny White's Best of Friends album. Any idea what kind of bass he played on that Lenny White album? Those EMG pickups sound great! Are you running those active or passive? w/btc control? Sounds like a Super P Bass! Thanks a lot.

  • u doin great job,if its reallly you u douin exactly the same like the album version, exellent, funk algeriaaa

  • Tim - Thanks for reminding me of why I loved this track so so much - as you its an exercise in minimalism -

Got to agree with what weedkiller said "the difference between Slikk Tim and others is, most play their instrument, he makes love to his'

    Total respect !.

  • Liking your playing man. Love Don Blackman as well loads of gospel in there. I was a little stuck on gettin the chords on the chorus, did u happen to work them out or just the bassline.

    Thanks,

    Al.

  • That's my favourite track. It's the bass that carries it nicely.

Totally got it on point perfectly. Wishing I had the skills too.

  • that is some solid bass playing. man that tone !

  • This is dope..

  • So cool, so slick ,so funky. fantastic playing there bro!

  • very good post, he is playin it right on to a tee, lol. i sampled and remade this track by don.

ps dude looks like the long lost member of "THE TIME" Monte More jr. lol

  • Omg...you was really getting into it. LOL

Seriously though, I always wanted to play bass and I was just wishing a few weeks ago that I knew how to play bass so I could play this song (among others).

    Nice work.

  • killed that shit.. niiiice!!!

  • Pure!

  • You played it righteously...love u!

  • Great job!!!

  • I bet Barry was a big influence on Stuart Zender formerly from Jamiroquai, I'm hearing a big similarity in tone and overall sound. Exquisite groove my man, keep funkin!!

  • hell yeah man... do that stuff, great song

  • commy tally vou,,

always have a space in my mind for you cover version,,,,,

  • hi. very nice stuff you have here!

have you ever tried a dimarzio p pickup? if so, how did it compare to emg?

  • I have a Model P in my "rock'n'roll" bass. Totally different animal. The Emg is like a solid punch, the dimarzio is all midrange grind. good for different things.

  • Your shades look whack son!

  • I know man, that's suckage right there... But I keep those cause they are correcting shades. New correcting sunglasses are in the works :D

  • I love and respect all you true musicians out there; you know, the ones that can pick up an instrument and jam, instead of sampling. This message goes out to the true vocalists also; who needs dubbing?

  • Yeah, but watch some SP1200 videos. Those beatmakers are definately jamming cause they make sick ass beats in seconds.

  • There are people who are more creative with a 300$ sampler than any "true musician" will ever be(and i'm pretty sure Tim can do both ;) Plus,he's not jamming but playing note for note Barry Johnson's (perfect)bass line, except for that tasty pluck at 0:41 that match the drummer's open hihat accent.

  • Wow ! That's attention ! thanks ;)

i think we know what we prefer hearing. =]

  • Probably the greatest youtube comment I've ever had. Thanks bro

  • Slikk Tim - you are smooth as silk! Loving it...

  • Yo dude!! Great work on this. You've got that bass down tight. Heard this for the first time the other week and nearly broke my jaw it dropped so fast. Trying to figure this one out on bass myself and having a hard time. Any chance you have a transcribe, or fancy re-recording it with a close up of the fretboard so's I can try and learn it?

    Keep on grooving.

  • Love it. Keep it up. Nice groove.

  • one of the few bassists on youtube who knows where the groove is

  • i love this funky music

  • Tu sais que Jay Dee l'a samplé ? c'est sur "Go Ladies" de Slum Village(Fantastic Vol.2,quelle classe, cet album!)

Chapeau bas, Monsieur Slikk Tim !

  • I enjoyed!

  • excellent choice and great playing

  • i love this track !

  • This is awesome, Don Blackman rules

  • You got good taste, homie. Those 16th notes are tricky....

  • i go for that bass line

  • rock on ,, man ,,,

    yea m8 ,, solid

  • LOL! he was breakin it down...good stuff

  • hey you're my man!(dont get any crazy ideas tho)... great feel! love the sound, and Don is one of my favourites! cheers!

  • You have a really nice feel - great groove and your timing is solid. You also have good taste in music! Just one thing - it would be even funkier if you drop out on the 16th note on the one in the chorus every so often (like Barry Johnson does on the album). Otherwise, you've done a very tasteful job. Keep it up!

  • definitely my favorite track. Well done on the groove.

  • very well executed on the chorus part...that's what makes the bass part so crucial...

  • haha..this is cool, you know your music..but this Don Blackman song would never make it today..."the girl is only 27...." hands off Don!!!

  • You mean 17 ;)

  • 17 years old is too young

  • Depends how old you are and how old she looks ;-)

  • nice work!!! keep that feeling !

  • This song came down from the stars!!

Don Blackman's music is as groovin' as groovin' gets.

Love the way you're feelin' it man!

These grooves, harmonies & chord progressions are what's missing from todays R&B.

    Much respect....Peace!

  • dude this is fuking awesome man

  • I love that album! Keep posting, I wanna hear you playing "Hearts Desire" :D

  • That's on point, man! Skills.

  • Wow man.....I always loved this tune, but now I love it even more thanks to your bassin' - really dig it!!!

    :P

  • GOOD JOB

  • hehe dude i was joking! i dont mid that,! kep playing like that!

  • you are the satriani of the bass lol xD i bet you are bald too hehe nice playalong

  • I ain't bald, I'm buzz cut xD

  • I have to commend you on your bass playing skills to a CLASSIC song! I just started learning how to play bass. You make it look easy! You should do a video of you playing along to "Hearts Desire" by Don Blackman!

  • The whole album is planned :)

  • go ladies, go ladies

  • OMG another one....WHERES THE PART OF GO LADIES FOR FUCKS SAKE...

  • On the album maybe ?

  • Good choice of genre Slikk, funk is feeling and your off to a good start. Let me be the first to say "you got some skills". I have most of these cuts of that release and this one has some complicated time signatures and you are managing them well. Sonjon played with Lenny White (twennynine)w/DB. Checkout MarloweDK. He's been doing this for a year.

    That guy's sick.

  • Thanks man. But this one doesn't have no complicated time signatures, it's all 4/4 shuffle. I love Lenny White too, the Streamline album is great fusion music (but I think it was marcus miller on bass).
