Clark resigned from Notts Forest in December 1996 as they seemed doomed to relegation from the Premiership.

He returned to football as boss of Man City just weeks later. But he lasted only until towards the end of the following season, as they were also relegated, to the tier now known as League One!

When it became clear that no club was interested in his services anymore, he quit coaching, and became the regional director of the LMA (League Managers Association). He still holds this position.
