My guess is the 109 he was up against was an F or G variant, which means the Mustang was vastly superior at that point in time, especially if the fuel the 109 had was low quality. The mere fact that a 109 could even keep up with him for that long is nothing short of miraculous.

@kn1b1s95, near the end of WW2, most German pilots were "bad at shooting". Most of the German aces had been killed by then, and Germany could not replace them.
America, on the other hand, was always replacing pilots, and would rotate aces back to America after a set number of missions, so they would be alive to train rookie pilots.
Also, if you've ever played a good WW2 flight simulator game, you would also know that the P-51D did, indeed, kick ass. It's maneuverability & speed are superb.

Hell yeah, The North American P-51 Mustang. Actually, it was made in England in a record of 127 days! Armed with six 50cal. M2 Heavy Machineguns make great work of the German Bf 109's and Fw190's. Did you know! The Ford ''Mustang'' was named after the plane. Another great Mustang type was the F-82 Mustang or ''twin stang''. Numerous Mustangs still fly today!

America, on the other hand, was always replacing pilots, and would rotate aces back to America after a set number of missions, so they would be alive to train rookie pilots.
Also, if you've ever played a good WW2 flight simulator game, you would also know that the P-51D did, indeed, kick ass. It's maneuverability & speed are superb.
