Scholars agree that on this track the "Beat Brothers" were not the Beatles. The Beat Brothers was a term used for all of the backing musicians on Tony's Hamburg recordings.
Bill Harry (1985): The Beatles themselves, John, Paul, George, and Pete Best, only participated in ...eight tracks... Rikki Barnes, a tenor sax player from Scotland teamed up with organist Roy Young, bass guitarist Colin Malander and drummer Johnny Watson to record "Let's Dance", "Ya Ya", and "What'd I Say" and on "Ruby Baby" Tony was backed by Joey Dee's Band The Starliters.
Just for Clarification. The Beat Brothers was a name Tony used for several of the backing bands he used (mainly because the bands were tied into contracts with other record companies). It is true that one of these bands was The Beatles but in this particular instance the band is The Bobby Patrick Big Six. The Piano Player is John Wiggins and the Sax Player is Alex Young. Hope this helps.
I used to have this song (What'd I say) in an album, sung by a black guy with a strong voice. The front cover showed him standing and one or two girls at his feet. It was a mid 70's or early 80's album. I lent it to a guy who I have never seen again. It was like 30 years ago and now I can't remember further details from the album, neither the singer's name nor the other songs' names but I love his version of this song and would like to have it again. Could any1 tell me which singer was that?
tony was brilliant but rumour has it the beatles (not participating here) used to perfom a 30 minute version of this song in hamburg, ive read about it both in from cavern to star club and beatle the pete best story. TONY was however a professional performer and had his act more together than the beatles, hence they were a perfect mix, see the saints for clarification
@tucolitosakallama You are right it's the hamburg szene sound that matter not who played, and TONY is there, this particular tune is not by the beatles, but why focus on this, when it's obvious that this is a killer tune MACH Shau Mach Shau
The Beat Brothers was an older stage name used by The Beatles way back during the time when they weren't fab yet and when they weren't yet recording artists...
no, it wasn't, it's widely known that kaempfert recorded many more songs for the album with other backing groups, and also he rerecorded some of them, and while the beatles had this song in their stage act they never recorded it with sheridan, there is no document of the beatles doing this song.
It ain't true. The Beatles backed Sheridan on My Bonnie, Why, Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby, Nobody's Child and The Saints only. During the same sessions held on 22-23 June 1961 there were recorded Cry For A Shadow and Ain't She Sweet, too.
The only time The Beatles used "The Beat Brothers" nickname, was for the first German release of "My Bonnie" single.

Is that really The Beatles backin it? cause there is such a great piano and in the end a sax or something, and nobody in the Beatles could play it.
GUILMON44 1 year ago
@GUILMON44 John Lennon plays the piano. No one plays the sax though

This particular song didn't have the Beatles as the backing band. It was The Beat Brothers which I believe was a different group.
