Ford has said himself, that the more full lyric repertoire was too big for him. His voice is well suited to Rossini, Donizetti and Mozart. I wouldn't say he is a bari-tenor though. He is simply a singer who uses his fully developed voice, not a portion of it like most singers today.
Vocal timbre is a product of good technique, not something you choose. Ford isn't doing anything differently than Florez for instance. He's just got a very different sound.
@chrisscruzzz what r u talking about? FORD IS A FREAKING LEGGIERO! He just uses his instrument in a different manor. Utilizing the high voice and also bring more space and warmth to the sound, something most Rossini tenors avoid where they bring a brassier sound. Ford freakin rocks! Gotta love this technique there is a reason he was and is so successful.
Ford always shows a certain constancy, stability in his vocal performance, unlike other colorature tenors who can't always avoid their vocal "ups and downs".
@otfried please see Rockwell Blake. This very aria won him the first Richard Tucker award if I'm not mistaken. Bruce is quite good, but far from Blake's level!
@safersephiroth2001 french horns have a beautiful sound, but are not perfect instruments...brass instrumentalists do the best they can, just like ford. i take it you're not a musician?

I always thought that Bruce Ford was that rare creature the Bari-tenor?

sorry to disagree folks, although Ford sings leggiero roles he is a lyric tenor. His voice has the weight and squillo of a lyric tenor.
