it's sad watching these matches and knowing that soon probably the best era of women's tennis (serena, venus, clijsters, henin) will be gone. now there are only players who either kill the ball (sharapova, azarenka, kvitova) or completely push it (wozniacki)
@lesguy19 This was in 2006 and she was indeed out of shape but still put up a good fight against and in-form Mauresmo. It's a shame Mauresmo was always a bundle of nerves because her game was beautiful. She was just always scared to win until the end of her career.
ima fan of the sport...and to say any of these girls are on the same level as a serena who is a 13 major winner...you have to be dillusional...mauresmo got a bagel beatdown in 22 mins in the second set...thats just to show you what serena is capable of
well, you obviously don't know what tennis really is. it's about playing, about running, forcing your opponent on the error...it's a fluent game, and good player NEEDS TO HAVE EVERYTHING in the game. I don't say serena is bad, but she simply hasn't everything-her touch is among the poorest in wta. look mauresmo-she had everything, watchig her against henin was tennis, but watching serena against sharapova wasn't-their game includes ONLY power, with nothing more tennis has to offer.
@vldvlado Hello???.... are you blind and deaf?... what has she done for the last 12/13 years and 13 grand slams ago?. Why is it you and the rest can´t accept the truth?. Mauresmo was good but there´s no comparison. Oh Please!
HAHAHAHAHAAHA You Folks Forget that SERENA OWNS MAURESMO 10-2, after this match SERENA literally owned Mauresmo until she retired like how she's owning Sharapova RIGHT NOW LOL. Once you make Serena 'BITCH LIST' ur in for a lifetime of fucking until u retire like Henin.
@lloyd3642 Love your comment!! And Venus also kind of targets those on that list. What Venus did to world no. 1 Dinara Safina in wimbledon 2009 semifinal 6-1,6-0 broke Dinara´s heart and courage forever...
@lloyd3642 Henin was never Serena's bitch. Serena only leads the head to head 8-6, Serena lost 3 of their last 5 matches and 5 of their last 8, and Henin leads the slam head to head 4-3 with Henin winning the last 3.
@usaskjock Justine Henin has never "kicked" Serena's ass. Everytime she won, it was always close..most of the time them gonig 3 sets. Serena on the other hand HAS kicked her ass comfortably AS WELL as Mauresemo. (I wont even go there with the thrashings Serena has put on her) Get your facts straight...look at the head to heads. Anyway, Mauresmo was definitely a good player in 06, credit to her. Everyone thought Serve/volley back hand players would stop the power players as the Williamses...NOT.
@lloyd3642 Serena does lose at the us open a lot actually. Henin in 2,capriati,stosur (thrashed her),clijsters(in 2),mauresmo, and venus many times. And lets not forget that serena has an ugly side. we saw it against stosur and clijsters. Serena isn't very likable. She thinks she can be number one by only turning up to the big events and slams. She doesn't put any real effort i anymore and is nearly done. By 2013 shell be retired or a nobody. And venus though much more likable should retire now.
@jafarhie yes but they are more hard working and dedicated.they train and push themselves and work their hardest. she relies on her massive natural talent and mental strength only. and though they are huge weapons her tennis work ethic is lacking.I respect the way she plays but i don't respect her.and i feel sorry for any umpire that has to umpire at her matches. lots of talent very good, good for the game but her personality and work ethic is lacking.
@lordazmadeus Serena works just as hard it's just that she's naturally gifted and can rely on the intangibles during any match where she's struggling. She doesn't need your RESPECT because she's earned it by winning more grand slams than any player from her generation. At the end of the day she'll go down in the history books as a well respected tennis phenom. The majority of great champions are flawed, she's no different in that regard.
@jafarhie "i will kill you" "your a hater" "your unattractive on the inside" "don't look my way, if were on the same street cross the road". "are you the one who screwed me over last time" "you cant get me trouble for saying what i want this is america" Thats why i dont respect her. those comments to eva asderaki and another line judge in 2 seperate us opens. Shes an arrogant selfish rude but talented tennis player. How can anyone look at her without some doubt after those words.
@lordazmadeus I understand and you're entitled to your opinion. Serena is very passionate when she plays tennis but she is a really sweet person. I have met her a four times at various tournaments and she was a sweetheart. When it comes to tennis she is very competitive. This is what makes her so great. Take it or leave it.
@jafarhie she turns 31 next year. She is the last remnant (along with her sister) of the steffi graf era. she played graf, sanchez vicario and conchita martinez. She playd with that generatin and now shes a shadow of her former self. By the 2013 australian open venus will be gone (as will clijsters) and serena will NOT be a factor. Also lots of mens and womens players will retire after the olympics-haas,hewitt,gonzalez,venus,clijsters maybe, ferrero. etc etc
@lordazmadeus The sad fact is that even at 31 Serena still has a chance to win slams in this era. If it wasn't for her foot surgery and near death experience she would have kept racking up slams. She has a few more left in her and then I believe she'll call it quits. All she has to do is regain her match toughness and the slam titles will come.
@jafarhie fair enough shes nice when things are going well. she was in trouble in the matches, big trouble when she lost her temper. Also i think she has 2 more slams in her possibly 3 but she wont win another french open for sure. Shes at the the end of the road almost.
I remember this match... Yes, Serena wasnt in the best of shape, but she was is somewhat in decent shape... she had played a few matches that summer to prepare for this tournament after not playing much of 2006 due to depression and injuries. In the second set, she streamrolled Amelie, but she took her foot off the gas pedal and played more tentative in the 3rd set, but not hitting as hard... And she look good here, nice dress, hair, jewelry, hair, and makeup... lol
Her movement sometimes raises some question marks. Serena is extremely quick and is excellent at running down impossible balls and striking them back for clean winners, this is because she has a strong core. However there are times in her career when her movement has looked suspect, she can sometimes be lazy and miss out the tiny adjustment steps needed for good positioning on the court, and can also look flat footed. She was at her strongest during 2000-2003 movement wise, in my opinion.
Not to mention her backhand is a very reliable shot, but in some instances her forehand can become erratic. But Serena isn’t just power, she can employ the use of topspin and uses slice, she can lob and volley. Saying that, her transition game is strong and she can punish players at the net too, her drive volley being the most intimidating shot in her arsenal.
Serena regularly records impressive stats on her first serve and hits the most aces at Grand Slams too; she also has a solid second serve to back her up. Serena’s ground game, when in full flow, is utterly overwhelming. She generates huge pace from her powerful upper body, her trunk rotation is explosive and she can strike winners at speeds of 90mph plus. She also takes the ball very early which robs opponents of time increasing the chance of hitting a clean winner.
Briefly, the serve is the most important shot of the game. It is the one shot you can fully control and initiates a rally. God didn't give Serena that serve. Serena worked hard to have a serve that is outright the best serve in women’s tennis. Her technique is simple and she generates huge pace through her powerful legs. She can also hit wicked angles and mix it up with spin utilizing the kick serve beautifully on many occasions, leaving players completely bewildered.
Mauresmo has absolutely no right to even have been a profesional tennis player. she is absolutely horrible. She is so bad it's not even funny. She has absolutely no power and she's a pusher. I hate her so much.
@foxnfoxnfoxn Mauresmo is an incredible player. Her technique is impeccable, great serve, amazing volleys and superb variety in her game. That you're too blind to see these things, shows you don't know shit about tennis. Tennis isn't always about power, it's about being smart and using the right shot at the right time, and Mauresmo was great at it. And she has some power of her own as well. Besides that, she showed great athleticism and personality.
@orbitalwarriorLike it or not, Serena's serve is the best in the game, it's powerful and varied. She hits different kinds of them. Would Sampras be half of the player he was without his? stop making excuses, you're talking about it like it's not a part of a tennis repertoire. Would the belgian Henin be the player she was without her backhand? And besides, she's as good off the ground as anybody otherwise she wouldn't be just another Karlovic or Brenda Schlutz Mc Carthy. We both know it
@kevin12061989 I was just telling a fact. Her serve gives a lot of free points, other players have to construct the point, serena often scrambles out a victory just because of her serve. For me; hitting hard serves isn't as much of an achievement as hitting a beautiful down the line backhand, or a fine dropshot. It's just dropping a bomb in the box, mostly because of the player's bodystrength. I'm not saying Serena wouldn'thave won slams without it, it just would have been a lot more difficult.
@orbitalwarrior She doesn't just hit a serve hard in the box. She places her serve better than anyone, which is hard to do consistently. And "her serve" doesn't "give her" free points, she earns those points by hitting the shot. There's nothing free about it.
@aa330 yeah, 5 seconds of concentration and she gets the point, sounds pretty effortless to me. It's a quality if you can hit hard serves regularly and consistently, but for me it's just not the same. I prefer players who construct points and earn every damn point, instead of relying on their serve. Off course a tennis player is a full package, but I think your rally-qualities show if you're a good player or not. Obviously Serena isn't all about serving, but it gives her a big advantage.
@orbitalwarrior Even if it's not as hard as playing a long rally, hitting an ace isn't free. The only free point is when your opponent double faults because you don't have to do anything. So you're saying she doesn't earn the point when she hits an ace? And you think rallying qualities show if you're a good player? I think winning shows you're a good player. But that's just me.
@aa330 Because everyone else on tour isn't built like Serena. I'm not saying she's a man, because that's childish, but she has however got an extreme physique. But you've maid your point, I've made mine, different oppinions. I don't even know why you seem to take it so personally, it's not like I'm saying Serena isn't a great competitor. I mean, what do commentators say during a match "her/his serve gives a lot of free points", meaning they don't need to spill energy to get the point.
@orbitalwarrior You're sounding like it pisses you off Serena has the best serve. It's not all about bodystrength to have a good serve, it's also about TECHNIQUE, and Serena has BY FAR the best technique on serve. I'd much rather see her hit aces than watch Clijsters, Sharapova and co hit tons of double faults, often 10+, those are the ones that give the wta tour a bad publicity on serving. The only ones known to serve properly on this tour are, Serena, stosur, Vee and Petrova. how sad
@diteraka It doesn't piss me off. It's more like nobody wants to recognize simple facts. So why do you think that men don't hit a lot of doubles? they all have got better technique than women?maybe, but if so, the question remains: why?answer: men are a lot stronger than women, and because of their bodystrength, comes better technique, because they can push more from their legs, get better extension, etc. Result: good serve = strong, tall body. It's obvious Serena has a big hereditary advantage.
@jshaoful I was replying to someone who said Mauresmo didn't have the right to be a professional player, I wasn't talking about Serena, or saying one is better than the other. You have the right to make that conclusion, but I don't know why you would bother me with this comment, since your reaction had nothing to do with my comment.
@jproxursoxoff Um, over-weight Serena bageled Mauresmo during Mauresmo's best ever year coming off Wimbledon and Australian Open wins. Serena was in even better Shape at the AO 07' so, it's perhaps not THAT suprising.
@KFactor93 maybe you are suffering from selective amnesia but it was well documented that Mauresmo suffered a groin tear and right shoulder injury during the finals at Wimbledon
She started to double right after Wimbledon that year but facts don't work with Serena Williams fans
they're both good players but mauresmo definitely has a magic touch and a genius sense of tennis...

Gosh after watching her form here, it's hard to believe she won a major a couple months later...
