  • OMG, so many wonderful memories of many scifi and anime conventions! TYVVM for posting this!

  • I have never seen such awesome and well-crafted classical masterpiece of animation since Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

  • This feels nostalgic and I wasn't even there to experience it.

  • gives me chills every time

  • 2 words, FUCK and YES

  • Um... Just thought I'd say... ponies.

  • @Collin8843 Bad animation.

  • For personal reasons those projects had to be put pn hiatus.

  • favorite. band. ever.

  • Why the hell doesn't Gainax make a boxset of their short films & OVAs ,

  • can i PLEASE ask which setting did you use on cartoon restore and msharpen? Multipass Bilateral, simple, Fuzzy Adaptive Filter?? And what strength and threshold numbers??

  • @333hoodboy Since I made this 2 years ago, I can't remember what settings i've used. Sorry m(_ _)m

  • When the day finally comes for Gainax to close it's doors, they need to do one more video like this one, only including stuff from 1983 onwards.

  • This is really amazing. to see all these characters and references. I am sure this will cause a lot of nostalgia for some. Hell, it does for me thats for sure. Just to see everyone together like that just gets me all teary eyed.

  • 5:14 Bottom left corner. Zardoz?!

  • the first song is not on any ELO album so what is it?

  • @JuxtaposeMystery It's a song by Kitaro, but I don't know exactly the title.

  • Great work on the Remaster. If someone out there has work prints, just think of

how awesome it could really look.

  • Like +1,000,000

  • HAPPY 30th DAICON ! WE'VE LOVED YOU FOR 30 Yrs and We'll love you for 30 more ! Stay Strong ! Stay Otaku !

  • Thank you for helping to preserve this great work. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • how did these college student avoid lawsuits from the likes of Marvel, DC, etc. Maybe things like copyright infringement is too poorly enforced during the 80s.

  • @VicViperMk2

It was until the lawyers in the early or mid 2000s got sue happy. Now you can't even do a fan

project without someone being pissed off. The 3d Chrono Trigger Resurrection remake got

killed, Scolls by the Minecraft team is being sued for © infringement by Bethseda because

Scrolls is No. 1 search in google, and the unofficial King's Quest Sequel Silver Lining barely

survived 3(!) Cease and Desist letters to kill it off.

  • @IndygoEEI Square-Enix can go die for what they did to Chrono Trigger Resurrection, same with Sega and what they did to SOR Remake.

Both Companies have made nothing but crap in the past half decade, and instead of doing the SMART thing of forcing the CTR /SORR teams work for them and release a non-free version that they can actually profit from (still evil but at least we'll actually get the games) they go for being both stupid AND Evil by killing the projects rather than just taking them over

  • @Citrakite: It's not 'crushing' the Macross. Harlock's ship Arcadia and the Yamato are installed on the Macross where the aircraft carriers would go in the original series.

And if I saw that combo on the scanners heading toward me, I'd *run*.

Also, the music behind the Daicon III recap is by Kitaro. I don't remember the name of the piece, unfortunately, but it may be from "Silk Road".

  • Japan, 80s, Anime Bunny Girl, ELO is only the beginning of how AWESOME this video is.

  • Yeah after that, the convention had better of been fanfuckingtastic.

  • The parts where she flew past all the half-faded characters (like 4:09) were very Yellow Submarine-esque.

  • i swear i saw jet jaguar.

  • so in 1983, the most notable things according to Gainax are Gundam, Vehicle Voltron, Star Wars, American Super Heroes, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider 3, the Wizard of Oz, Lupin III (green jacket), Lum, Space Adventure Cobra, Doraemon, and Getter Robo.

those were simpler times. Surprised by the lack of Captain Harlock, Golgo 13, Kinnikuman, or the Gatchamans

  • @HyperSonicSquall 4:30 IIRC thats Harlock's ship crushing the SDF-1 Macross

  • @HyperSonicSquall And Macross with the Carrot Ship firing its "Main Gun."

  • This video is definitively the definition of a NERDGASM!! and it's 100% awesome.

  • These are the most epic convention openings I've ever seen in my life.

  • 0:46 YAMATO NOOOO D:

  • Okay, I know this has a lot of well-known and beloved anime characters in it, so I'm wondering if Astro Boy/Atom is in it. I'd be sorta surprised if he wasn't. Anyone seen him? I can't seem to find any trace of anything Tezuka-made.

  • @UTAU53Yui I beleive he's in the giant crowd scene along with others from the time, like Lupin, Speed Racer and Lum.

  • @LamangoKaijura Could you give me the approx. time (ex. 1 : 23, 2 : 37, etc)? I'm not sure I'll be able to find it (I'll try anyway).

  • incredible!!!

  • Anyone noticed that the world underneath her feet at 3:37 looks *exactly* like the Civilization V world map?

  • did annyone else see superman and batman?

  • Thing in the glass fell over...

  • Only creator of Evangelion could make THIS AWESOMNESS as first video.

  • I knew there was a reason this reminded me so much of FLCL and End of Evangelion. Just watching a city get leveled over ELO's happy-go-lucky wailing reminds me so much of 'Komm Susser Tod' from EoE.

Gainax is freaking awesome. Damn that old, rotten bastard Heffner for keeping us away from a perfect version of this bunny girl insanity.

  • FLCL episode 0 (just kidding). I didn't know that in FLCL Haruko makes a reference of thi. All the visual effects fit great with ELO's Music, If they join again in a concert they should play this song while the video is being played on a big screen.

  • Early Gainax animation with ELO as the soundtrack? This is ridiculously amazing.

  • This is why drugs should be legal.

  • Wow, this is such a huge step up from Daicon III

  • 3:48 VF-1A Valkyrie in Angel Birds paint scheme as seen in episode one (Boobytrap) of Choujikuu Yousai Macross!

  • its as if the human mind unfolded itself and the gates of heaven split the cosmos to show the meaning of life and the creation of time...pure joy, imagination, and love. the most amazing thing ive ever seen, and it was made in the 80's which is amazing beyond comprehension.

" *sobs* It's so intense!" -The Double Rainbow Guy

  • Well this is certainly one of the sharper versions of the film that I have seen online. However the same old problems are there, and its because we're all stuck with the same old crusty laserdisc source video.

Gainax's website actually has a page dedicated to these films and there are screens posted there that are of staggering clarity--it leads me to believe Gainax could release a crystal-clear version of Daicon IV, something no one has ever seen, at any given time. And yet...

  • 5:09

The most mind blowing thing about this video is that they have one of the robots from Silent Running in it.

  • were is daicon 1 and 2

  • @TheKingofThorns There is no Daicon 1 and 2 videos. Daicon is, here, the name of a Japanese SF convention, held in Osaka.

  • @cracrayol i know i was pointing out something

  • @TheKingofThorns its was a joke relax people god get a sense of humor

  • For a long time people have made theories about what you see when you die. Personally I think this is the best candidate.

  • In a gamified world 190 Likes is pitiful/ but 2 dislikes, well that should be punished

    by immediate disintegration.

  • ok now i wish i got this when i went to the anime convention last year. maybe il be lucky this year and its still around. or else il have to go hunting for it.

this looks too epic not to pass up.

so um.. is her backpack like an all purpose bat utility belt or something?

  • There was a *really* great quality copy of this ripped directly from Laserdisc. I found it a few months ago, but apparently it got deleted. I guess this will do.

  • As epic as it is random

  • This song is ruined because of the shitty Twilight book.

    Fuck Stephenie Meyer.

  • Old School is the Best School! That was an awesomely cute little nostalgia bomb. :)

  • OLD SCHOOL

  • Not bad, but sadly over-leveled, and from there - less detailed even than original.

  • Not a carrot, but a daikon radish...get it, Daicon?

  • Wow, I almost don't believe there's a high quality video here... the other ones were so bad, I couldn't even see the blossoms that the explosion was made from. Seeing this version is a whole different experience.

  • any chance of you putting up a HQ download of this?

  • Thus Gainax was born.

  • @Nolroa And Shaft followed suite

  • Awesome! Just an awesome restoration! great job!

  • Does anyone know the name of the first song that plays?

    Not ELOs Prologue/Twilight

  • @CadetPD The song during the Daicon III recap is "Noah's Ark" by Kitaro.

  • Best robot voice of all time.

  • I love this vid. Whats the song called?

  • @invadermario : Electric Light Orchestra - Prologue & Twilight (from the album "Time")

  • @cracrayol ....There a storeboard of Daicon IV with music background I do not know... someone could tell me who sings? I'll be grateful....

  • Needs more Densha otoko

  • Wow, just wow, everything prior to 1983 is there ;_;

  • I WANT A CARROT SHIP.

  • Carrot?

  • It looks like a carrot to me... o____o

  • @Yomioka It's a daikon, a Japanese Radish.

  • I know this.

I wanted Puncha to rethink the carrot thing.

  • What the fuck did I just watch?

  • @spnkr19 Gainax' baby steps. And it was fucking awesome.

  • I-it was ;_;

  • @spnkr19 "They're popular now, so they suck"...

Nah, not really, I enjoyed the hell out of Gurren Lagann...

I think I have yet to see one anime of them I did not like.

But yeah, it seems hard to believe this was done in 1983 when they were not even a professional company.

  • I don't watch anime save for maybe two or three that aren't even airing anymore so everything you said went right over my head.

  • @spnkr19 tl;dr version of what I said: The guys who did this were amateurs and are today one of the most important japanese animation studios.

Still, this video might be one of the best examples of the kind of stories/videos they normally make (which tend to be crazy, with a lot of emphasis on music and paying homage to other pop-culture classics).

  • @HaraldHoerwick

Yeah, baby steps that surpass the speed of light.

  • Interesting intro. Gotta love the references to all the pop culture.

  • Oh japan, you so crazy

  • AWESOME!!!!

    THANKS A LOT!!!!

  • 3:10 Xenomorph's holding the ship from 2001: a space odyssey, lol

  • For the love of everything, please post a download link to this particular remaster. It's incredible.

  • for anyone interested, the audio at the beginning of Diacon IV is "Prologue" by Electric Light Orchestra, and then it segues into "Twilight" by ELO again, off the album Time

  • This is the copy I'm gonna use for my class... Thanks a lot!

  • Holy crap! This is amazing! Could you post a link to download this version? The YouTube rips don't do it justice! :)

  • I'm so happy to be able to see this! The scenes where Daiko is flying over the group shots give me chills...

  • Excellent work. Thanks for restoring this important piece of otaku history for us all to enjoy!

  • this is better than the oen which says it's the 'best'

  • This was a awsome effort (unlike other HD "remastering" i saw). Congratulations.

I'd like one day to mux the linework of the original video with a restored color process, what would give some the lost sharpness back.
