My compliments to Jim on some very impressive (and massive!) scenery work. I work as a model maker and have done custom layouts in the past, and I definitely take my hat off to him! Really impressive.
What a fantastic job! I have driven Hwy 70 up to Reno more times than I can count. You really nailed the scenery. I especially liked to see the strands of wires to detect rock slides, the leaning power poles and the shed over the track to deflect falling rocks.
At the time this was filmed, there were more than 500 handmade pine trees alone, on the layout. Even though they are in the 12"-14" height range, they don't even make a dent in representing the greenery found naturally growing there. I guess this is a testament to how large of an area Jim chose to model (I think from bottom to top of the scenery is in the 4'-5' range). It's VERY impressive in person! I haven't been back yet but I here there is a lot more finished plus more trees too.
Super video! A realistic sound! My son in delight! At me a question: what it for the locomotive without a cabin, - in a real life? It has the engine? What scale of this breadboard model?
@JBofBrisbane it's been quite a while for me....I usually work weekends making in diffulct to get away and see what's all taking place nowadays with model railroading. BTW, I model in 1:1

this is an amazing recreation of one of the most beautiful spots in the country to watch trains. Came upon Keddie, CA and the Feather River Canyon by accident in 1998 and have never forgotten the scenery.
Yes, it's my train running on his layout the day after we did the shoot for Great Model Railroads. I haven't been back yet (it's half way across the state) and I guess he's got a lot more done. I'm planning a trip back sometime this year.
That was awesome filming! 5 stars! makes me want to start building a layout in my new family's house, I have a large HO layout in my parents basement. Just awesome sound and filming! Kudos! FIVE STARS!
I think filming my train running on the layout makes the article come to life. Still, neither the magazine photos nor the film are nearly as awesome as being there in person!
Oh yea! This was really good without the sound, but now that the sound is with it its even more realistic. Great job man! Lets just hope that the YouTube sound police don't come knocking at your door.

Is this your facility?

I wish! It's the creation of a friend of mine. This layout was the feature article in the Kalmbach annual publication GREAT MODEL RAILROADS 2009.

Amazing work! Nice job on the Wye. Looks real... just need some more green undergrowth and you'd fool everyone.

Thank you. I try hard to edit the sound just right. The locomotive you ask about is a "real life" GP60B (B = booster or cab less).

Thanks, I didn't build the layout, I'm just running on it. There are much longer trains in some of my other videos.

@turnoutjim - you need to get out to more train shows.
