Live performances is the injection of real personality of the band we do not see/hear from their albums. While Arneal sings very well, Steve Perry has so much more to give to the fans out there when he performs live. That's the difference. Only 22 and I feel like I miss out so much from the 70s-80s!
This debate is similar to the one about Chicago. Diehard Chicago fans say that the band is not the same since Peter Cetera left. Sure Jason Scheff is a talented performer but IMO he just seems to "miss" sometimes. Just like Arnel wiht Journey--talented of course but the feeling of the band is just--"different'". You can't imitate the greats you can only attempt to replace them.

Arnel DOES NOT ROCK JOURNEY. They need to wake up. I was just at one of their concerts and people were walkin out...REAL EARLY. Arnel does not sound good. A lot of people were very disappointed. Even Steve Augeri sounded much better than Arnel. You could close your eyes and imagine Journey in their best times when he was with Journey...BUT ARNEL...NEVER.

Amazing. It's just different enough to know that it's live and not lip synch. But he sounds JUST as good as on the album. Not a lot of artists can do that today.

Both were amazing vocalists that became the heart and soul of the bands they fronted, and were largely responsible for the success and "super group" status that each band attained. People forget Pineda was discovered singing kareoke. What do you do in kareoke? You try to sound like it is supposed to. He may sound like Perry, but who sang this song in front of 100,000 or more people in Japan of all places.
Before you try to compare Perry and Pineda, remember this video was made before people had computers in their homes. Pineda sounds good now, based on the insturments and tech used. In the 80s, there was only one "voice" and Perry was it.

Name one song that has come out of Journey since Perry left(none). They are all aware of this. Arnel there comes a point as an artist, when he will want to record and do his own music.

I saw Steve and Journey in LA in the 80's at the Colosseum. Someone threw a frisbee at or to Steve Perry. Steve was in the middle of a song, singing, he caught the frisbee--kept singing--then threw it out to the crowd; they went absolutely wild!
We must always give props to the man who's voice is the one who made Journey who they are today--Steve Perry. We will always miss him despite the fact that others have claimed his position and have done an equal job in his absence.
Good lord, I've probably listened to this version a hundred times, but it still blows me away every time. Obviously the dude couldn't pull off all those incredible vocals during the '83 "Frontiers" tour since that was the beginning of his voice getting a little more raspy (still awesome nonetheless), but I consider this to be the definitive version of this song.

Both were amazing vocalists that became the heart and soul of the bands they fronted, and were largely responsible for the success and "super group" status that each band attained. This is not a put-down on SP (I'm a huge fan), but just answering your question, "but who is?"

Before you try to compare Perry and Pineda, remember this video was made before people had computers in their homes. Pineda sounds good now, based on the insturments and tech used. In the 80s, there was only one "voice" and Perry was it.

Journey today uses a lot of sound equipment that enhances ALL of their vocals including Arnel's. Sorry to bust your bubble but facts are facts. Not to take anything away from the former karaoke singer, but Perry and the guys didn't have snazzy audio boxes. They had their instruments and Perry's voice. This is NOT his best performance but its damn good.

Journey is now just a tribute band to Steve Perry. Arnel has worked hard to sound like Perry. However, he lacks passion, emotion, hair, humor and sex appeal. The members know that Journey will probably never reach as far as Perry took them. Seive cowrote must of the songs and sang the hell out of them. Name one song that has come out of Journey since Perry left(none). They are all aware of this. Arnel there comes a point as an artist, when he will want to record and do his own music.

Hell, he discovered Arnel by watching him emulate Steve Perry. Much like David Lee Roth felt compelled to find a guitarist like Steve Vai to offset EVH after he left. It all goes back to the origin. Every attempt after that is diluted because it is trying to match the original.

Because Steve was the song writer, or co-writer, on the majority of their songs, had input into production,etc. The consummate well-rounded musician-and the catalyst for the success. Revelation sold a lot because of the great backstory with Arnel, and the Perry era second disk-but Eclipse, with all new music, has NOT fared well per the Billboard charts. I saw Steve and Journey in LA in the 80's at the Colosseum. Someone threw a frisbee at or to Steve Perry. Steve was in the middle of a song, singing, he caught the frisbee--kept singing--then threw it out to the crowd; they went absolutely wild!

Good lord, I've probably listened to this version a hundred times, but it still blows me away every time. Obviously the dude couldn't pull off all those incredible vocals during the '83 "Frontiers" tour since that was the beginning of his voice getting a little more raspy (still awesome nonetheless), but I consider this to be the definitive version of this song.
