I've never heard Matmos but I think Deerhoof are pretty stupid. As for Cocorosie being so "new". Sure, it's not every day that you hear a band that uses the Kazoo and a Harp...but it's just plain wretched to listen to. "If it is done well," you say. Well I say this is anything but "well". And not all genius lacks convention. Some of the best songs ever written have the standard verse, chorus, verse, chorus structure. Like almost everything the Beatles did and that stuff was absolutely genius.

see, the conditions deerhoof was in when they garnered attention was straight instrumentation since they didnt have anything else to play. given, it's pretty artsy fartsy but notable.

i respect that you feel it's "wrteched to listen to" but i'm not asking for you to like it.

i think some examples of bands who do it well would include (and these are defined by their ability to meld with mainstream tastes): sigur ros, portishead, wolf parade etc.
