The Maritime and Coastguard Agency says coastguards and lifeboats are sent out needlessly. In 2010 the agency recorded 1,500 flare incidents, of which 500 were believed to be false alarms caused by lanterns, while the CAA says they also pose danger to landing aircraft.
Crops are also at risk; last summer in Oxfordshire, a blaze from a lantern destroyed 2.5 hectares of barley. Litter is also a problem, said the NFU: "The people releasing lanterns wouldn't dream of dumping rubbish, but that's what is happening."
Civil Aviation Authority wants a ban on the sale of the sky lanterns, which are paper and wire hot air balloons fuelled by a naked flame. "People have no control where they land," said Nick von Westenholz, government affairs adviser for the NFU. Dorset and Somerset fire service said it had seen a sharp increase in lantern fires in the past year. Farmers say cows suffer stomach damage from eating the wire of fallen lanterns.
For those that want an easy and safe way for building "UFOs", find a lightweight and high power LED control board(bicycle/safety lights work) plus lightweight lithium batteries(coin works). Then build a triangular platform made out of very lightweight tubing(straws work) and have an LED board on each corner. Get yourself some clear/white balloons filled with helium and hook on as many as it takes to lift off your LEDs. No fire hazard and more reliable than lanterns.
Seriously irresponsible to set fire to stuff and launch it into the air to land anywhere. Could end up setting someones house or barn or stables on fire. Could kill people, kill animals, or destroy people's livelihood...
...and how about forest or heath fires?
ah well, its a giggle right?
Only complete losers would do such a thing!
Nonsense to say these are safe - just look at all the you tube videos showing people being idiots with them, and getting caught in trees etc
very cool! my only concern is the plastic hitting the ocean and getting ingested by a turtle or other sea animal when they mistake it for a jelly....and we all know what happens then.
Our UFO Balloons are made of burn proof paper and are 100 % bio degradable. So you don't have to worry about any ingested by turtles or other sea animal
I want to try this, but I'm afraid it would start a fire. Do these eventually burn out when they get really high in the air? I live in a dry state, so I don't know if this would be too dangerous to try.
