Very cool song. Numen and Thomas Dolby changed my musical taste from that classical rock to the next stage of music. In 1980, I thought this music would help change most people over but then it died and corporate metal took over and killed everything. At least, alternative came back to sane music.
If his music was first released this year, it would be fresh and new and remarkable. The fact that it still sounds so is nothing short of amazing. No one sounds like Gary Numan.
I grew up with Tubeway Army then Gary Numan as a solo artist, saw him live a couple of years back and he is better live than on the recordings so if you can, go see him.
Don't know how you can be a Numan fan and not like this tune. In the late 80's early 90's he released some questionable material but this in an example of him at the top of his game. One of my favourite Numan songs and from by far my favourite album.
I had the pleasure of seeing him on the Telekon tour, second row. Still one of the best stage setups I have seen live. Also, one of the top shows I've seen. I absolutely love his first four albums. Huge influence on me. I was a teen then, 13-14. It's good to see how much he has influenced music now.
@atomicpickle Not true: it's minimalist and therefore very imaginative. Gary Numan was/is a master at producing maximum effect using as little as possible.
The drummer for Buman's band was the best. One of the band member's died of an overdose in the early or mid 80s (?) and I think it was the drummer but I could be wrong about who it was.
@jrmetmoi The drummer for Numan's band was the best. One of the band member's died of an overdose in the early or mid 80s (?) and I think it was the drummer but I could be wrong about who it was.
There should be a revival of interest for Gary's material. I can't believe this stuff... I did not even know about gary numan a few weeks ago... what a shame.
@brithael138 Okay, to be honnest, I was familiar with that one, but somehow for me, it never translated into interest in the artists that had produced it. I used to be a metal-head with little interest in other times of artists/musics, until recently.
When i put a Gary Numan track at my friend's home, they obviously don't like it, this music "don't speak to them" like we say in France. Btw, i never met someone who knew Gary Numan in my country. My friends don't understand this music, any song, except "Friends are electric". I don't know why...perhaps this is too weird for them, but they can listen to Tool, Mr Bungle or King Crimson. Perhaps this is the sound, this is too "cold" or whatever. Anyway I can't understand...
Christ, I'd forgotten just how powerful this track is....I lived for this when I was a teenager! Still preferred his earlier - more moving - music, but the Telekon album was great for other reasons.
this is one of the greatest albums from the 80s, But, I cant believe he influenced so much bands and he ended up playing like some of the people he influenced,, is like Bowie I live all his albums from the 70s ,after the Album "Tonight" everything went to hell ,, creativity and quality doesn't last forever,,
Total opposite, let Manson and NIN do the hardcore metal. Not the he is bad at doing the whole goth metal thing but this is when Numan in his prime, at his best, and what type of music he is more known for to the general populous who knows him.
I hope that when the next generation looks back at all the cultural output from the 80's, Gary Numan will be remembered as one of its best poets. Gary for Modern Poetry Prize!
I'm 13 years old, and from the 'next generation' you speak of.
Nobody listens to any of the old greats, such as our good friend gary here, not even people like bob dylan, david bowie, lou reed, bb king or any of the old brilliant musicians.
I look at TS Elliot and Bob dylan as the great poets, today my age kids look at 50 cent and all that stuff the same way. I'd give anything to have lived when you did. Best poets of today? i wish...
what difference does it make, bigmouth strikes again, there is a light that never goes out, william it was really nothing, girl afraid, still ill..(and a million others)
Well........ If you were 15 in 1979 and started listening to Replicas then the Pleasure Principal and then finally Telekon. Your mind would of been so blown away for that time that it would of taken you until today to recouperate and you would have missed Pure and Jagged hahaha. So I disagree. I listen to pure and Jagged and it doesn't even come close... eg: "What if gods dead, we must of done something wrong"... God Damn!!
That and the fact that album covers were part of the mind fuk back in the days... Telekon was a more rougher edged disaplined sound than the more popier sounding Pleasure Principal... Hence the diaplined red stripes on a simple black cover with Numans floating puppet/alien robot head in the middle... Only thing that comes to mind with this look would be the concept album movie "The Wall" with the marching nazi black hammers with the red stripes and the look on Pinks face.
Actually, it was inspired more by the Japanese culture, which is typically represented by the color red (land of the rising sun); juxtaposed to the dark wave movement "a la jour" . He sings in Japanese on one of the trax in the album, in fact.
@Delsanar Sort of, OCD is shall we say unhealthy? However, the simple act of enjoying same music, same artists, same cars, same things really is not bad, if what you enjoy are best at their craft? I offer Gary Numan, Dodge, RUSH, male felines, USC cheerleaders, those who have no equal/peers?

00:00 - 00:25 It only needs 1 finger for Numan to demonstrate complete ownership of everything
00:26 - 00:29 Silence - we stand in awe before...
00:29 - 00:35 Now just 1 note & Numan exercises total authority over the universe until...
00:36 > The drums start and the tension breaks - awe and adoration are replaced with ardent listening to every word from the Master's mouth.
05:28 Experienced differently by different people: wonderment, exhaustion, inspiration, revolution.
