  • I have to thank NorbertR33 and others for these marvelous trips back in time with "What's My Line" video clips. This show ended when I was a kid so every video clip I'm seeing is for the first time and it's just absolutely exhilarating.

  • "Baby Jane" brought Bette her 10th Oscar nomination (she lost to Anne Bancroft's performance as Annie Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker.")

  • Now I wonder how Bette, or Joan would call these reality attention whores these days. If she was alive she would be ranting her life off. Joan, well, she would have been knitting!

  • sadly its the true. Even the great Bette Davis quoted it: "nowadays, they say starring ,here and there in my days we earned that recognition" those were the early days were stars were the real thing in new America we got a bimbo smurfette called Snooki a star.

  • Those eyes !

  • She looks great in this clip. She also reminds me of Jeanne Moreau here. BETTE DAVIS...All Hail the Queen!

  • This episode would have to be from 1962, since that's when "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" came out. That's a great movie, BTW. If you haven't seen it, check it out!

  • Sigh, this show was so much fun,not to mention interesting.....

  • She has Bette Davis eyes.

  • Hahah she disguises her voice in this one --- the last appearance, when she was promoting The Nanny, her breathey "Yes" gave her away.

  • She's so fab!

  • These people had CLASS!!

  • I love her laryngitis voice! Long live Baby Jane <3

  • I can never get enough of how she throws her dress out behind her when she walks past the panel. Such style!

  • Gone are the days of TRUE HOLLYWOOD STARS.....Todays actors are just wannabes....

  • Lol, Bette's instant reaction after Arlene asks about the "Vis-à-vis" (Joan Crawford) (1:25)! You have to watch really closely because it's really quick. (For the record I love both Bette and Joan =)

  • Others who acknowleged the audiences on WML included nearly every old Vaudeville performer who appeared (Sophie Tucker, George Jessell, Eddie Cantor, Bert Lahr, etc.) who all knew who paid their salaries.

  • Others who acknowleged the audiences on WML included nearly every old Vaudeville performers who appeared (Sophie Tucker, George Jessell, Eddie Cantor, Bert Lahr, etc.) who all knew who paid their salaries.

  • She looks less uptight and rigid here. Full of fun and laughter.

As she got older, Bette became more serious in interviews, maybe she just got fed up with everything. Don't we all?

  • I love Bette Davis, I feel my heart all soft and warm when I watch her.

  • Bette Davis was in that rare class of performers whom others strived to emulate, craved to equal or even surpass, but always held in the highest regard...knowing they had the privilege of working in the same profession as one of such magnitude talent and class!

  • Were members of the panel permitted to guess the identity of a guest (it's so strange to use "guest" and "guess" in the same sentence!) primarily yb way of recognizing the guest's voice? I realize it isn't as fun or cerebral, but, for the most part, the voices despit being disguised, nearly always give their hosts away.

  • Definitely my all time favorite actress!!

  • She was never what I would call a beautiful woman. Ordinary looking, really.

But she could act to perfection.

  • this wa quick :-)

  • what year was this?

  • she is such an unstoppable badass

  • I love how they referred to movies as "pictures" back then. My grandparents still call them that :)

  • @serpentisma there have been a few good film since 1977, how about Schindlers list starring Liam Neeson. The Pacific Miniseries which has been on recently is very good.

  • amazing actress

  • What a good sport of her to go on when her voice was nearly gone!

  • I love that movie. Especially the scene (and I know it has nothing to do with WML) is when Joan Crawford's character goes through the check book because the date is literally the day before I was born.

  • Bette was sheer class! Greatly respected by those who have called her difficult. People dont realize that if she and others didnt stand up for themselves, the studio bosses would have really used them like a commodities. She said once, that at the end of her Warner Bros. Years after 18 long years she built many soundstages with the money she made them and that her last day on the lot she spent with a sound man and a producer & shared drinks & not so much as a farewell from the front office.

  • Oh my, she's wonderful!!!!!

  • she attended my High School, for one year I think, but she did not graduate from it.

  • i adore Bette Davis, hope i meet her in heaven one day. that would be a great honour.

  • They're all so classy!

  • The stars of yesteryear were in fact just that: STARS!!! They weren't just talented they were smart! Today we have overpaid egos who are basically dumb as sticks.

  • Baby Jane never dates.

  • why don't you put the year of these programs?

  • @moorlock oh puh-leeze. ABC is as far left as you can go! And only a liberal like you could bring up BRISTOL PALIN in relation to a TV clip that was recorded 50 years ago. come on.

  • for your information, ABC is owned by Disney, a totally right-wing company.

  • @moorlock2003 Huh? You did it again! You bring us Bristol Palin, and NOW you bring up Tom Delay. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A 50 YEAR OLD TV CLIP. You should change your name from moorlock to moron. dope.

  • Why don't you answer my simple question. Do you think convicted felon Tom Delay qualifies as a "star"? Do you put him up there with Bette Davis? How about Bristol Palin, her too? Geez, answer the question for crying out loud! Don't you understand English, or is it a second language for you? Comprende, por favor?

  • So what do you think of convicted felon Tom Delay? I suppose he's a hero to you.

  • She looks beautiful here.

  • She was exceptional. One of the greatest actresses who ever lived.

  • Even her signature looks dynamic!

  • The Queen of the silver screen, Miss Bette Davis!

  • she's so delightful!

  • This is when Hollywood had celebrities that were true legends! Today pure garbage! Celebs that are wannabees and will be forgotten in a few year's! LOng live celebs from 1920-1960's!!!!!!

  • @heebieandjeebie how true. In those Golden years of Hollywood, people with talent and class were considered stars. That honor had to be earned and a lot of work had to be done for that kind of honor. Nowdays, a star wannabe just has to act like a slut and she is a star. She/ he just has to act wild or maybe show too much skin to be considered a star. That honor has no meaning now. They say Snooky is a star. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!

  • @calihartley2010 the criteria for being a star has changed because the media has changed. back then you had a few studios, a couple of networks, no reality tv. nowadays, there's 200 channels, indie films, and many reality shows. think of it like a sports league.when there are 6 teams, there can only be 120 players. when there are 20 teams, you need 400 players. same thing with today's entertainment medium. also, the term "casting couch" isn't a new one. work for honour? in hollywood?

  • @watty024 Exactly my point. Lowering the standards has caused a lot of classiness to disappear.

  • @calihartley2010 your point on lower standards was taken but addressed. however, i think you're glorifying those "golden" years. many people were 'stars' simply because of how they looked, or how they performed on the couch. also, hollywood had its' share of scandals, at a time when there was no internet or cell phones to catch all the bad behaviour, and when studios could buy off bad press. the classiness hasn't disappeared, but alot more classlessness has appeared. in my opinion.

  • @watty024 you are right in some ways concerning dissemination of info then and now, but tell me how has a lot more classiness appeared? I am curious to know.

  • @calihartley2010 no, i said a lot more class less ness has appeared, upsetting the balance.

  • @watty024 so I take it you mean that there is class, but today's Hollywood does not conform to it. Is that what you are saying?

  • It must be hard for these chain smoking actresses to disguise their voices

  • Long live Old Hollywood!! Queen Bette was the best of them all.

  • class

  • @arjhendrix While watching this, before I looked at these comments, that was the very word I was thinking of.... so glad someone else feels that way about Ms. Davis, too..."CLASS" Seems like most of the celebrity guests exit too quickly. I was so glad to see Bette Davis acknowledge the audience, too.

  • the audience always gives it away

  • she actually looks kind of milfy here

  • @swooningtree Word. I thought I was the only one who thought that. She's hot in her own way :)

  • a vecchia ...........

    mortacci sua

  • a vecchia ...........mortaccci sua

  • Long live Ms. Bette Davis!

  • Elephant Shoe

  • ...awesome...awesome...awesome...she rocks!!

  • I love her.

  • This is what Madonna will look like when she's in her 60's.

  • I love these "What's My Line" clips, they are so much fun!

  • The film mentioned was, of course, Whatever Happened To BabyJane? Kiddies, this will give you nightmares for years to come. It came out in 1962 in black and white but no matter what-it was edgy and surreal. A classic without the bloodshed.

  • @NYVoiceEnjoyed your comments.

  • @NYVoice Lunch, Miss Hudson? Why ceeerainlyyyy, Miss Hudson!

  • old hollywood rocks my socks!

  • and I love how Dorothy chose to stand.

  • @zamusicza

    Why did she stand?

  • @DictatorRoB Out of respect. When shaking hands with a man or a woman etiquette says a woman can choose to stand or sit. If she chooses to stand it is showing a great deal of respect. Sometimes when a title is involved she doesn't have a choice. On all these What's My Line clips I've seen Dorothy and Arlene stand very few times. Arlene stood for Dorothy's father and Elanor Roosevelt. Dorothy for Elanor and Bette. Of course this was back when girls and boys were taught these things.

  • @zamusicza

Than I wonder they didn't stand during each hand shaking, just to avoid possibility to offend the other one.

  • LOL I would have been able to guess at the first yes. Arlene was right how do you fake that voice?

  • Love Bette She is my all time favorite actress. Classy and she never put up with anything or anyone.

  • Bette Davis was a TRUE actress.

  • LOVE THESE Thank you!

  • The elegance as she walks out! You just don't see that anymore! A simple swish of her dress, and a a sweeping exit... True class died with her.

  • bette made the best exits of all the mystery guests on WML. makes sense.

  • She has the most raspiest voice I've ever known.

  • @beyoncetyratina she has laryngitis!

  • @toothbrush55

    Oh.. sorry.

  • Today's twenty-first century has no movie stars. They are simply referred to "celebrities." Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Sophia Loren, Rosalind Russell, and Elizabeth Taylor are movie stars or were.

  • Class and sass!

  • what an amazing women!

  • I love Bette Davis, even if she was kind of bitchy, it wast in a good way. She had fun with her stardom, that's for sure.

  • How do they get them so fast? Iol

  • she actually looks really good there. in the same year she was in baby jane

  • When people had class & elegance...

  • When people had class and elegance...

  • One of the Best ! Should have won a 3rd Oscar !! Whatever happened to baby Jane ? Was a true classic . Noone can compare to Bette Davis .

  • I don't know why but it seems to be that Ms. Kilgallen adored Bette very much, just watch her face looking at Ms. Davis

  • 1962

  • makes you realise what fab makeup they use to age her up on baby jane. she looks fantastic here, a blonde margo channing without the edge!!!. dont you just love her.

  • I agree! But anyway, Bette always looked older than she was. But she was very ATTRACTIVE ;-)

  • The epitome of class ! I adore Ms. Davis...

  • "Where the hell did I put that last bottle o' Scotch? Musta been that damn maid!"

"Listen, sis, one of us ain't gonna make it, and it's not me!"

  • Oh, she looks very pretty here! What year is this, please?

  • @Etheline 1962/3 roughly about the time of baby jane

  • Thank you very much!

  • What's for din-din?

  • What an ovation !!!!!!

  • God I love her!

  • her voice is amazing! you KNOW its her

  • Oh! I have sooooooooo favorited this!!!

  • This just makes me smile... normally she's so intimidating (in an impressive sort of way) but here, with that voice she is like a cute little puppy you wanna give a hug! Still so glamorous though... 'It's just SPOOKY!' lol!

  • That my friends is a STAR, class and quality

  • what a great actor ....But you are blanche .You are ! !

  • Thanks for the share flybreath. Obviously she had to disguise her voice - it is so distinctive. Adored her - such class.

  • oooh the old hollywood, speaks class and statuesque beauty! now, it's shame filth and overrated sexuality

  • @MuzikLuver8, I couldn't have said it better. 'Now, it's shame filfh and overrated sexuality' ZING!

  • @MuzikLuver8 The old Hollywood... such class. Like Fatty Arbuckle raping a girl to death with a broken bottle, Ramon Navarro choking to death on a dildo, and Frances Farmer getting her brain stirred with a coat hangar.

What's changed is not Hollywood, but the ability of studios to control the press.

  • @icaruspnw Fatty was acquitted, the actress in question died from a botched abortion....and Farmer was never given a lobotomy..thats mere rumor...not true

  • @icaruspnw Fatty was acquitted, the actress in question died from a botched abortion....and Farmer was never given a lobotomy..thats mere rumor...not true

  • @icaruspnw Fatty was acquitted, the actress in question died from a botched abortion....and Farmer was never given a lobotomy..thats mere rumor...not true

  • Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were rivals and always hated each other

  • Class and charm!

Yeah she really did not deserve a third Oscar for "Jane" but hell yeah for "All About Eve"!

  • whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? I can say that All about Eve deserved one, but Baby Jane too, she was creepy and incredible in that role!

  • Classy lady, she's always been a big fave for me. Thanks for posting this! :-)

  • Bette Davis had real star quality and charisma. Great actress

  • look at the expression at 3:50!

  • I've watched this so many times and every time I come back to it I just love the way Bette's gets up from the desk, sweeps up her flowing dress, offers her hand to the panel, stays for a tiny chat and then turns to the audience to thank them! How classy is she?!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, in other episodes the mystery guest greets the panel but offers the audience no acknowledgment whatsoever. After all, fans are the reason a star becomes a star! Bette Davis always remembers this. She doesn't just wave, she offers the audience a bow, a traditional and humble gesture of showing thanks. As others have said, she's pure class all the way!

  • @CDU916 I just read Bette Davis' last autobiography "this 'N That" She talks abouther career the stroke, breast cancer & broken hip & always talked about WORKING. Worrying if she'd ever work again & how important her fans were to her. She, like Judy Garland, Lucille Ball always bowed to their fans, showing great love & respect for them.Today's "stars & Celebritites" are cocky up-starts & most look down on their fans with disdain and its because of the enitlement mind-set of todays "stars".

  • Wowza wowza wowza... look at those breathtaking eyes! Gorgeous woman!

  • I agree with chucknyc123 on manufactured "stars". When this years "stars" of Dancing With The Stars was announced, I heard someone say they ought to retitle the show "Dancing With Whoever They Can Get". And it's true! They could never re-do this show because there aren't any real stars left. There are celebrities; but I'm not sure they could get big celebrities in this day - well maybe they could. They go on talk shows to plug movies or books, so they could use this show for same thing.

  • Having a cigarett cold! :-)

  • She really does have Bette Davis eyes...

  • Yes if you look closely her eyes really are beautiful

  • Yes. Bette Davis eyes indeed. She never was a classic beauty, but she sure did have some expressive, lovely eyes.

  • Great clip!! I just saw Meryl Streep on Conan and thought - Wow, these two (Bette and Meryl) are as good as their generations would probably ever see.

  • She remains a legend thanks to YouTube and TCM. I just wish she could have gotten in a few choice words for that awful Joan Crawford in. Nobody ever seemed to fool Arlene Francis. They should bring this show back -- except we'd have to see manufactured 'personalities' like The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus as mystery guests...

  • Oh, stop with that. Why would she diss Joan? They had a huge hit movie at the time, due to BOTH of them giving excellent performances.

  • Wonderful post!

  • A fabulous actress. A genuine gem.

  • I think it's so nice that everyone loves Bette. She's one for the ages, that's for sure.

  • Ahhhhh Bette's voice is soo distinctive.

    She just cannot disguise it.

Ahaha that kind of "smokers talk"

    Ahhh I love her

  • One of my favorite actresses of all time!!!!

There was and never has been an actress like Bette Davis........

  • the most beautiful and liberated, classy lady around... joan might have been a great beauty but she didnt have shit on bette

  • She's just FABULOUS!!!even with laryngytix!!!Very few artists star like her..

  • Wow. I think the only other times have been for Bishop Sheen, Eleanor Roosevelt, and a nun.

  • Duke535: She just didn't want Bette to say "But ya ARE in that chair, Dorothy — YA ARE!" :)

  • I wish I could jump in a time machine and go back to this year. I would give up the internet, microwave ovens, cd's , everything. Just to enjoy a simpler time. I would.

  • When was this aired? :D

  • It was aired Nov. 11, 1962. She was 54 here...

  • she's like....I dont give a fuck

  • I love Bette!

  • Gracious and lovely. And what a great walker!

  • EWW.

  • I was at a theatre in Forest Hills where she made one of those appearance.

  • Bette Davis was crazy about Errol Flynn!!!

  • i thought she hated him

  • She did at one point. Shr thought he was a terrible actor but later admitted that he wasn't that bad. I love her eyes at 3:51!

  • Ooh, me too. She reminded me a lot of Meryl Streep just then for some reason.

  • Yeah she did have that look about her! Gotta love the Great Bette! And Meryl for that matter! A modern day Bette Davis in her own right! :)

  • She is the queen. Love her. Awesome to see this. Thank you.

  • Gorgeous dress on a gorgeous lady!

  • Bette Davis is a Star ..i just adore her

  • Bette Davis looks real sexy here!!!

  • in the 'whats my line?' for Barbra Streisand they told her that bette davis had talked about her and i can't find that clip!

  • She doesn't have shit on Bette Davis, that's why

  • Bette Davis was a REAL star. She had more talent and charisma in her little finger than movie stars today have put together. I love this lady! She comes across as so genuine in all the interviews I've seen of her on youtube.

  • Charisma is right.

  • Aw Bette sounded so cute when she was saying "This is all I have" XD. That probably sounds weird, but whatever lol. This show is amazing =)

    ~Jade808~

  • Nah! Doesn't sound weird, it WAS really cute! Heehee! :)

  • LOL! Thanks for agreeing =P haha

    ~Jade808~
