  • Anger, hate, profanity, vulgarity, insults, all from listening to a poor guy singing in memory of a

fallen son. What in the world have we come to?Is this what our fallen sacrificed their lives for?

For God's sake please converse with peace and respect.

  • Was the most outstanding voice live in the world , I have seem him 6 times live and when he hits the high notes you feel that the roof of the building is going to be blown off . Very few singers can even try to match the quality of his voice . He has never given a poor performance live and is voice is even better than his records when live .

  • Um what kind of niggrish fucktard listens to this and then clicks dislike? fuck...

  • Hello 5papa and Mrsticksb. I read your post about where this song came from by Roy Orbison, I have the album. Here is the info:

Roy Orbison "Memphis" MGM Records 1972. There you have it. Thank you so very much.

  • Actually the song is English although obviously it has almost become an Irish anthem.

  • @brianofoz The tune from danny boy is IRISH! Its origin is the 'Derry air' Danny Boy is Lyrics that have been put to the tune. It was first noted in the 'Melodies of Ireland' a 1855 book See Chapter - The Ancient Music of Ireland. Please get facts correct!

  • i mean big O

  • great, big best ever end of

  • And I thought I had heard every Roy Orbison song. This is the first time for this one and it won't be the last. The brilliance of this man can never be denied.

  • One of the great versions of one of the great songs.

  • Flamorgan is correct Weatherly wrote it in 1910 and it was used at one time as a recruiting song for the British army. But who ever wrote it, or why, Roy Obirson puts his stamp on it

  • hahaha! hit me where it hurts a spelling mistake!!! lol!!! oh im so sorry didnt realise millions of people on you tube have terrible musical taste!! hahaha you are such a funny person!! Oh and look at lil old you knowing whats good compared to everyone else! If you dont like his voice thats your taste then dont listen but dont insult mine everyone else intelligence!! Go and listen to what ever makes you tick and let people enjoy this without listening to your disgusting insults!!

  • @imajeed2

First of all- you, calm down. XD Not helping out. Being a spaz, and feeding the troll. Just ignore him- he's just another prick who can't accept other people's beliefs and opinions.

  • This is not an Irish song, the air is Irish and was known as "The Londonderry Air"

  • @1Harkin Correct, the song was only written in 1910 by an Englishman (Fred Weatherly). The song was originally called "Eily Dear" and is certainly not an old traditional Irish song, the Londonderry air tune itself is a very old Irish tune.

  • my irish mother is the only other person who could sing this song like an angel!rip mom and roy.

  • Irish classic, definitely. I love Irish songs

  • is there a live version of this? can only find audio version..roy's version is truly beautiful, his voice is made for this beautiful song!...can't help but get the goosebumps listening to this!

  • Jackie Wilson's version is great too.

    But, this is ROY!!

  • Folks you have just heard THE MASTER sing Danny Boy Rest in Peace ROY xxxx

  • @marchgirly08 You couldn't have put it better, completely agree ROY is the MASTER

  • this version of Danny boy is totally and utterly beautiful . being Irish i have heard quite a few versions of this song .

  • How could you not love this :)

  • Adele is my favorite on the women's side. And Roy Orbison is best of all men. It is a great pity not to Roy Orbison live longer because he had guaranteed could make were the only song that Adele can and more to where.

  • This song was sung in our family since lord knows when,Haunting but beautiful.Thank you Roy.R.I.P.

  • It's just brilliant

  • I have heard the really best singing this song. Because this song is inherent;y Irish and we know ever word he hasn't really got the sentiments of the song. I love his other stuff.

  • I CAN'T EXPRESS IN WORDS ALONE HOW WELL HE SANG THIS SONG HOW WELL IT WAS REPRESENED BY THIS ARTIST AND HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE IT IN THIS DAY IN AGE WITH SO MANY OVER SEAS.

  • As good as recorded music gets.

  • @MrSticksb

The best I have ever heard. Where did this come from?

  • @5papa I believe it came from a Warner Bros collection of standards in the early 80s.

Chet Atkins was trying to market Roy as a country artist , unsuccessfully , and Roy would take side projects. You could'nt cubbyhole the guy, he could sing anything , with

soul and operatic power. I'll dig for the album name and post here if I find it . Merry Christmas pops !

  • He WAS the best of ALL time.

  • It's sad allright, but that's how we feel loss; we all would like to be remembered in the best light, right?

  • The history of the song and and the music can be found by Googling 'The Legend and History of the Song 'Danny Boy'. I suggest 'buffet62' you do some homework before you spout off - you are very wrong - and also apologise to 'OddThomas88'

The additional words and music score here by Roy Orbison bring a new vibrance and atmospheric dimension to this old classic. Great upload - thanks.

  • Thinking of pop! Peace, DAD.

  • very nice

  • In a class by itself. Roy gives a most creative and expressive reading of this song.

  • this is absolutely beautiful. just gorgeous.

    <3

  • Roy had a great vocal range. One of the best all time

  • Never ever sung any better, by any other!

    Roy Orbison's unique voice

    JR (UK)

  • my mane is danny.xd

  • Irish classic?

Was actually written by a proud Englishman.

    Funny how things work out.

  • @OddThomas88 Yeah it is funny how things worked out, especially if its a fabricated lie like the one you just said. Lets not mislead people. This song was written by an old Irish Jesuit back in the 1200 A.D. Actually the song was sung by this Irish Jesuit on the battlefields, after the battles. He was grieving for all the lost souls that died. The name Danny Boy was in honor of all those killed.

  • 'tis a hackneyed phrase, but i shall use it anyway: they just dont make 'em like mr roy orbison...wonderful...thanks for the post...much love to all my YT peeps...love ya america...

  • beautiful!

  • Great Roy Orbison . . . I like most all of what he sings. For a unique interpretation of this beautiful song view The Larks version from about 1954 . . . definitely out of the ordinary.

  • i love roy orbison but jackie wilson does the ultimate version fo this song

  • BEAUTIFUL....best voice in the world.

  • BEAUTIFUL....

  • fantasties

  • Rolling Stone Magazine has rated him the 13th greatest singer. Elvis and Bono claimed him to be the greatest singer they'd ever heard. Bruce Springstein memorialized him.

He started in rockabilly/country-western (he was born in Texas you know) but later became rated among the best in rock and roll.

He lost his wife and children in different accidents. His style was lf standing still, solitary ,vulnerable Quiet, desperate vulnerability was how it was described.

    He sang in 4 octives!

  • go ireland

  • @niccilomachiaveli . I do not blame you what you though about Roy voice but do your friend ever suggest you go to see Psychiatrist? If not yet and then go to see Psychiatrist or Psychologist ASAP.

  • 11 Brits

  • WTF?! Why haven't I heard this one before?! I've heard DOZENS of people sing "Danny Boy", but The Big O?! BY NO DOUBT THE BEST COVER <3 <3 <3

  • Ma name is Danny, and I'm a boy! :O

  • This man had an incredible voice! What a beautiful version of this old song!

  • Superkenalmighty.

I wrote that Roy conveys the sadness of a father in those circumstances. In case you did not know, the fathers of most, if not all fathers of sons who are in desperate or dangerous circumstances are always "If only I could take his place" If you ever experience it you will share the reality that this song, sung properly conveys. My comment alludes more to Dodo wishing roy Orbison Dead in his comment before last.

  • I could not have expressed it any better than jaygatesby1. Roy in my opinion was the ultimate 20th century singer. Roy could sing anything and would do so with passion through a voice that will stand the test of time.

  • I think Roy conveys perfectly the sadness of a father whose son is off to war, the anguish that he could not take his place, the refusal to let life move on without his son!

Sad then, the comments from Dodo251 with the obscenities of the young, disrespecting all whose opinion is not his own. Danny is to give his life for this?

Wishing a dead person dead is a futile exercise Dodo! Lastly the words to this song were written by an Englishman, Fredric Weatherly.

  • @Issiteasy Danny didn't give his life for anything. Danny is a fictional character. Get real.

  • the best

  • brilliant

  • I think Roy Orbison sings this song brilliantly....Slim Whitman has been my favourite singer of this beautiful song...

  • Fabulous version.

  • I'm Hungry People!

  • HE...FUCKING.... SUCKS.... ASS....

  • @niccilomachiaveli You're not 44. More like14.

  • @niccilomachiaveli Yes, you're 14 and obviously missing a dick. That explains the massive attitude problem.

  • @Dodo251 you're talking about someone missing a dick on a ROY ORBISON video? really? the only one missing a dick is the guy singing an irish classic rather terribly.

  • @niccilomachiaveli Written by an Englishman! You appear to be the aforesaid appendage:)

  • @niccilomachiaveli ohh yeah not like you could do better? assshole.

  • @Friendlykiller2 anyone can do better. a lobotimized cow chocking on its own tounge can do better. and i am sticking by that viewpoint.

  • @niccilomachiaveli you know what why do put a video up of you singing this song then and show me oh right I forgot you are might suck.

  • @Friendlykiller2 it's not MY job to entertain you though, it's supposed to be HIS job to entertain us, and he does it porley. he sucks in short, this is a song that i have admired as a great piece of art and this piece of shit singer degrades it to his level of insipidity and low level vocal talent.

  • @niccilomachiaveli WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HIM AND HIS VOCAL TALENT !!!!!!!!! IF YOU DON'T KNOW OR IF YOU ARE TOO DUMD HE WAS SINGING BEFORE YOU WERE BONE!!!!

  • @Friendlykiller2 a long carrer does not eactly mean an illustrious one, his voice is whiney, cracked, cliched and just sounds like he's faking emotion. he can't sing, the only reason that he even exists is because people like you can't determine between a singer whose mood aparently fluctuates wildly (looking at his voice tone) and good music. he has to rely on backround to make himself sound better along with making up his own shit lyrics to go along with the song.

  • @niccilomachiaveli NO YOU ARE WRONG CAN i ASK YOU SOMETHING? DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND ALSO DO YOU KNOW WHAT REAL MUSIC IS BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE TO ME YOU DON'T. !!!!!!!!!!

  • @Friendlykiller2 i think i have a good inkling about music. if you would allow me to reference hip hop, common sense, biggie smalls, tupac, big pun, big L, sugarhill gang, NWA, easy E, ice cube, eminem, dr. dre, rakim, nas, marly marl, big daddy kane, immortal technique, diabolic, MC ren and others. or perhaps some jazz, keiko matsui, michal franti, cantelope island ect ect ect adnauseum. all of these have one thing in common that make them music, they aren't this. if u be trollin then good job.

  • @niccilomachiaveli

There's nothing more hilarious than someone referencing hip-hop when discussing taste in music.

Maybe one day you'll grow up.

  • @ChudFapper if you don't know who any of these rappers are then look them up. their songs were poetry, plain and simple, it may not be in traditional style but you can't deny that their lyrics have meaning and complexity. roy orbinsons lyrics are mediocre at best, he can't sing and he can't play guitar, if you were to look at changes, juicy or lose yourself then maybe you would know complex lyrical structure. hip hop is music, and it is difficult to make, grow a pair bitch.

  • Comment removed

  • @niccilomachiaveli And you, sir, are an uneducated, opinionated dickhead - with a rather strange grasp of musical structure - even if you pretentiously try to imply that you do have said grasp. As you feel inclined to slag Roy off, it would help your credibility if you could be bothered to spell his name correctly - given your high opinion of your own intellectual prowess.

  • @niccilomachiaveli Ha Ha!

  • @niccilomachiaveli have you thought that its not a problem with Roy, but you? you are after all in a miniscule minority that fails to appreciate his voice, not something i'd be proud of or want to let people know....

  • @jikkh2x have you ever heard of that music is subjective in it's value to certain people? or are you just an idiot who believes that the "incredible" quality of Roy Orbinson's voice is objective and is loved by everyone? I am proud of the fact that I have an opinion on Roy, and I am also proud of the fact that I vocalized it. Do you have a problem with me being proud of that? and if so, why?

  • @ChudFapper Well said - methinks the shit they smoke or drop has clouded niccilodingbat's brain.

  • @ChudFapper I think there is one thing equally as hilarious. Discussing taste without having tasted it all. If you think hip-hop is what the radio feeds you, Maybe one day you'll grow up.

    God Bless Mr. Oribson

  • @ChudFapper - Wow look at you, you really told that other youtube user there! Is this the way you showcase your intellectual superiority, by posting insulting witticisms about your more refined musical appetite on YOUTUBE? Maybe one day you'll grow up enough to recognize that none of the genres are inherently more tasteful or sophisticated than the others. It's what you do with them that counts.

  • @niccilomachiaveli hahahahaaha!! what loser you must be!! Im glad you can read this as you are not blind but you sure are deaf!!!! lol!! Save the insults no one cares what you think!!! Go and anoy some other someone else!!

  • @imajeed2 deaf? I think anyone with any musical taste will agree that this man has little to no talent. his voice is grating, his added lyrics are tired and cliche, and it is overall an unpleasant song to listen to when this man sings it. the version of Danny Boy by solstaro, (related videos) is much better than this. this is just terrible. I love the renegade spelling of annoy as well, really adds a nice touch to a comment formed out of idiocy and blind rage at a subjective topic.

  • Lovely Voice! But a Lousy rendition of "Danny Boy" Leaves are falling? I have heard "Roses are falling" isn't it supposed to be " Flowers are dying"

  • Beautiful! Magical!

  • This song Broke me up. Tears & memories things like this should never be heard by mortal man, both he and this song belong in Heaven

And I guess thats were he now sings it

  • Bye Dan.

  • What a voice

  • @RichardElden

Good one, Rich. Most will agree Brian Cowen is better than Roy Orbison, haha,NOT!

  • @twinkie57401 Why would most agree that Brian cunt face Cowen has a match on the great ROY ORBISON,

Cowen is a cunt that should be done for treason. I believe that the penalty for treason in Ireland is death by a firing squad. I would have no hesitation pulling the trigger on that fat alcoholic cunt.

  • Fred, E, Weatherly wrote the words only for this tune which is an ancient irish melody of unknown origin.Regarded as one of the most beautiful ever written.

  • My Nan taught me this when 8, although it does deppend on where in Ireland you come from as to the version you sing, all versions are special to me, as it was the first song I ever learned to sing.

  • Frederick Weatherly wrote danny boy in1912..he was english.

  • *sniffle* Never another voice as beautiful as that. Great song, but Roy made it better. I need a beer. Cheers.

  • 62 counties thats It?and you cant get along? Now I know why my ancestors left Ireland 250 years ago and married into the Tribes over here across the the big pond,2010 I ride and pack horses for a living in the Uncompaghre Wilderness I dont have two nickels to rub together and I think life is a HOOT,And I aint mad at nobody,Thank God for imagration,Get off that island and take a look around it is a big old world,Elk meat is good!!!!!

  • Comments like nationalities Vs other nationalities related to this song, are sad.

take the song for humanity sake!

Some races just love to hate! I guess!

and for hundreds of years through generations they hate.

thats the sad side of world

  • it's hard to pick the four performers who belong on modern music's mount rushmore....but roy has a very strong case.......aside from his iconic ethereal voice, his arrangements and genre fusing style sets him apart as one of modern music's great creative forces. opera meets rock meets folk meets pop meets country. incredible. thanks for posting this.

  • @jaygatsby1 wonderful comment & so well said ...have never been able to find words to express my awe at Roy's talent, but i think u have done it for me ...i cannot agree more with ur word "incredible" ...RIP Roy Orbison...

  • @jaygatsby1 actualy that sounds horrible.

  • @jaygatsby1 roy is mt. rushmore. this version of this great song cannot be equalled. "."!

  • @jaygatsby1 Buddy.....you just nailed it. "iconic ethereal voice".

  • lol well if you're talking anyone -

obviously elvis, then probably frank sinatra , then after that its a bit hard man

guys like ray charles, buddy holly, johnny cash, and all those early jazz kids, idk man...

  • Why do people have to turn this into a farce arguing over politics??? Lovely version Roy, knew you'd do it justice RIP.

  • I've always been a Roy Orbison fan and I love "Danny Boy". and this is the first time I've heard this version. Roy, R.I.P., you were a voice like no other but this is an unbelievable version. I just can't believe how good this is.

  • Powerful words, tremendous heart, great inspiration for anyone!

  • I can't beleive what i am reading, you have Roy Orbison singing a beautiful ballard and you are making comments about who did what in world war 2!!!!!! Shame on all of you. Go somewhere else to air your views

  • This is the original? The best.

  • Lovely.

  • Beautiful old standard by a great artist. For the traditionalists and another 'treat' listen to 'The Seekers' singing this with Judith Durham out front....also too good to miss.

  • The words are changed but the heart of the song will always be there !!! beauttiful Roy!!!!

  • What a unique & beautiful version of this song. Danny Boy by Roy Orbison ?? No way I though. How wrong was I !!!

  • Pure emotion - no matter where your routes are - this is simply the best

  • Wonderful, best Danny Boy recording ever!

  • an absolutely brillant version

  • it certainly very different from any version that i have heard, but very good.W ere he got the words from is another question as they are different from the original.

  • so many many irish murdered by the english ,and the transplants brought over to steal our land ,ireland for the irish .tiocfadh ar la

  • @imatim1888

Exactly. I can't stand the British. Pompus bastards.

  • @fiftysal2 A laughable comment from a Yank. The most clueless people on the planet.

  • @kemptonite

You assume a lot. Normal for ignorant people like yourself. Find something productive to do. Your life must be pathetic.

  • @fiftysal2 Assume what? That you are a clueless Yank? Or maybe you are an Oirishman who left his so-called beautiful island and now bores everyone about how hard done by they all are. Or again, one of those silly Yanks who have never been to Ireland but drink that black stuff on St. Guinness Day and parade around in green going on about their Oirish ancestry.

If you weren't so thick you might ask yourself why so many Oirishmen choose to live in Britain instead of Oireland amongst their own kind.

  • @kemptonite This from the cowards that were neutered... I mean neutral in WWII as if the Nazis were better then the allies because they hated the British too. You know I did mean NEUTERED after all. We saved you sorry asses and you know it. Talk about clueless Saint Preserve Us!

  • @Zardoz215 Who are you having a go at exactly? The Irish were neutral, and a lot actively wanted the Nazis to succeed (again, many brave Irishmen came and fought on our side but were treated disgracefully by their fellow Irishmen after the war. Ironically at the same time as Nazi war criminals were being welcomed whilst Jews who had suffered were being refused admission to Ireland).

As for the US they were neutral until attacked. And the US didn't declare war on Germany.

  • @fiftysal2 fuck off cunt we aint pompous we're just better than scum like you who write racist shit on youtube cos your too scared to come to england and say it to our faces

  • @imatim1888 And what are you doing in the USA then? Another "Irishman" who has never been there but thinks drinking Guinness and wearing silly hats on St Paddy's Day makes him an Irishman? Why don't you go back to Ireland and give America back to the natives, a lot more of who were murdered than the Irish.

  • @imatim1888 what about the innocent people that the murdering scum of the ira were responsible for , they don't even know what the Irish flag stands for , never mind wanting 36 counties , they cant even manage the 26 thieve got,

  • this must be one of the best songs around, roy was fantastic !!! i play this with toussaint mccalls - nothing takes the place of you, check it out.

  • Jesus H Christ.. when he hits the high notes at 3:13.. pure bliss.

  • Ulster4Ever. Great song TY Roy, for this the best ever. So many Solders killed by the IRA in Ulster so many Dead belonging to the Ulster Defence Regiment, may God Bless You All. RIP > At The Going Down Of The Sun And In The Morning We Will Remember Them All ..... Amen...

  • @MIKETHEDON0 The UDR were based in Northern Ireland. Not Ulster.

  • This was the first time I've heard RO's Version. It moved me to tears, just like his version of Beautiful Dreamer. RIP Roy Orbison and God bless you and your son, MrThomashope. Laserbird28, thank you so much for sharing this rare and wonderful video.

  • This is the First time I ever heard Roy's version, his talent transcends all music whether he wrote played or sang. Roy was about the greatest.

    LB

  • thanks for the info on old blues, chairman of the board...i do remember that he way a big sensation in his earlier years...and Sinatra and Elvis made fun of that when Elvis became the next big thing and by the mid 50's old blue eyes was not the

    "teen dream" anymore..............

  • WHAT A GREAT MEMORIAL TO A GREAT SON Mr Thomashope LETS HOPE HE AND ROY ARE SINGING IN HARMANY TOGETHER AWSOME

  • This is "new" to me! What an amazing version. Tune is absolutely fantastic in its own right, combine this with one of the finest popular vocalists of the post WWII and you get a version that just mind blowing! Rest in peace Roy!

  • @Darkslayer79 taste in ur ....

  • this was played at my grandads funeral miss him loads r i p

  • Comment removed

  • The world is a sorry place without Roy!!!

  • I too believe that Roy was one of the greatest singers of all time. His vocal range was truly incredible. I only heard this version of Danny Boy recently, and I can't listen to it enough. It sends shivers down my spine.

Not to be morbid but there are two songs I want played at my funeral - Je ne regrete rien by the incomparable Edith Piaf (for obvious reasons) and now this.

  • @trntndr Roy Orbison has the most unique voice. His voice cannot be equalled. No limits to what he could sing. What a fabulous song he created.

I love Elvis but Roy Orbisons voice is unequalled. When he sang a song, there was nothing to improve on. God bless you Roy!!

  • I agree with you about both Roy Orbison and Edith Piaf.

So much music gives me shivers or makes me cry or wakes me up or gives me joy.

  • sorry for the repeats having issues with this tube

  • beatiful never heard roy's version before

  • Just unbeatable love it

  • i think RO was a musical genius ...this unique arrangement is just awesome...i truly believe he could have sung anything, even opera ...truly one of the best voices of the century ... RIP Roy Orbison

  • what can you say brillant

  • Just unbeatable.

  • it is an irish song. it was heard played by a blind fiddler in the co antrim by an irish lady who liked it and penned the words to the original. i dont know who wrote the extra words

  • @robertmac62 Aparently an English Lawyer wrote the words - Frederic Edward Weatherly in 1910 - he was born 1848 - 1929.

  • yes, this was writen by an englishman, and although it has been recorded over 100 times since its original version in 1913 this is one of the best, Roy sings with such passion and even though he never did, he could have been forgiven for missing notes in parts. sometimes he almost sounds like he is crying (although i believe he was in parts of "too soon to know")

  • It's believed that the tune is an old Irish air composed by a blind harpist.

  • @niamh556 The tune is the Derry or LondonDerry Air (depending on your religious affiliations) but the lyric is by Fred Weatherly who was an Englishman born in Somerset. He also wrote Rose of Picardy so has at least two classic songs to his name. Not bad for a lawyer who knocked up the odd lyric in his spare time.

  • It's not an Irish song. It was written by an Englishman who never laid a toe on Irish ground.
