where can I buy her cd? I googled her name, can't find anything.. I'm going to go to her site.. Simply beautiful, and if she could read this, I don't think she would waste her time because she is obviously busy with more important tasks like making timeless music
Hi Ioana , I like your playing a lot, your interpretation of this work is a 10 out of 10! What you need to work on is your right hand, your fingers nearly pick in the direction of the strings, when they should be at right angles to the strings.and your thumb should be straight and move only at the base knuckle. What you will get with this technique is an effortless power not a powerless effort!
@31041955 no its not necessarly to keep the fingers at right angles . the way she keeps them is very good , because you get a much warmer sound , if you play like that.
Thank you Ioana for allowing us to see your soul through your music!. Your wonderful technique is fully in service of your art. I love the colors of sounds and the accents you put on each sentence. With them the piece flows like a poem that caresses our minds. Very expressive!.
Thank you Loana for allowing us to see your soul through your music!.
there is nothing sad, IMO, Ioana is a gift from God, and one of the best guitarists in the world. My friend Scott and I sat stunned listening to this piece, which i first heard by another player on pandora.com . Amazing
That's amazing! For anyone who can't see and play such chords has magnificant talent! Same thing if one wasn't to hear, especially, and be so musically enclined.
@rabbitcanfly On this instrument, a skillful player will bring out all the "voices" - the melody, the bass, and the accompaniment - so that it sounds like 3 guitars playing simultaneously.

She has also obtained numerous prizes in prestigious competitions such as "Gargnano", (Italy) "Printemps de la guitar" (Belgium) "Joaquin rodrigo" (Spain) and "Guitar Foundation of America" (Canada)
Ioana Gandrabur has four degrees in music and speaks six languages.
Ioana performs concerts, both Solo and with Orchestra, in Canada, France, Germany, Romania, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Austria, USA and many other countries. She teaches master classes internationally in countries including Germany, Mexico, Romania and the USA. She has also made several recordings on radio and television.
Then, receiving full scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, she traveled to Germany for postgraduate studies at the Musikhochschule in Köln (germany) with Hubert Käppel, the Musikakademie in Basel (Switzerland) with Oscar Ghiglia and the Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf (Germany) with Joaquin Clerch. She received diplomas from each of these schools.
At the age of 16, Ioana immigrated to Canada. She continued her studies at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal under the direction of Jean Vallières and graduated with honors.
Born in Bucharest, Romania, Ioana Gandrabur started playing piano at the age of five. At twelve she discovered the guitar and feeling an immediate connection with this instrument she began to study with Liviu Georgescu and Petre Fartatescu. After only two years she won the Romanian National Guitar Competition in the adult category. Ioana is the youngest winner in the history of this competition.
great work. tough to be blind, but she was blessed with long graceful fingers. I so wish I could play guitar, but I doubt my short fingers could do much. :)
She is indeed beautiful. Unfortuneatly she can´t see her own beauty in the mirror. But she can feel her own soul playing the guitar. That´s the most important thing.
Dude please, just because she is playing guitar doesn't make her beautiful. Now, don't get me wrong I'd tap that, but still she seems bland in that lifeless Russian/Balkan'esque kind of way.
@dohertm2 it's not that she's just playing guitar that makes her beautiful, it's how she presents it. If you listen instead of look, anyone who could play such music is beautiful in my opinion.
@SteauaBucuresti The saddest thing of all... (or well why not the best, who knows) is that she can't even read what you and me are writing here unless someone reads it out loud for her. She'd see how many ppl like what she does.
This superb interpretation equals the one of Leif Christiensen in its purity and fidelilty to the original score.( something very inusual in the guitar field...) Bravo Ioana!! Here is an amazing artist palying the great Regondi!..
"Canadian-Romanian born blind guitarist Ioana Gandrabur plays Rêverie by Giulio Regondi (1822-1872). Recorded in Montreal 03.04.07. Unedited performance."
This piece is one of the most beautiful and expressive pieces in the guitar repertoire, incredibly difficult too.. She plays it very well, her technique is great!
whoever is a critic of this or any of her pieces you are completely wrong... i am an obsessive classical guitar listener and her technique is perfect she doesn't add her own interpretation especially to her bach pieces i think she plays the pieces as they were written and intended to be played which is exactly how they should be played
Ca intr-un vis! Ioana esti deja o artista si sunt deosebit de bucuros ca te-am descoperit! Sper sa continui si pe mai departe cu aceeasi pasiune si dedicatie!
I'd give my right arm to play this piece as "unemotional" as others claim. She might use a bit more rubato in certan places, but that's a temptation for our misunderstanding of early and mid-Romanticism. She plays the piece as Regondi himself might have, given his cultural proximity to Classicism. She avoids a kitsch sentimentality that often accompanies modrn evocations of the Romantic. I play this piece, and I've learned from her performance. Her blindness is simply beside the point. Brava!
What an exquisite touch this girl has. It is emotionally a little restrained but equally it has a great elegance, and it's nice to hear no forced notes, or brashness. Imagine learning this and other pieces with no visual reference to go on. Thanks for posting it.
DadsDaBossa - Yes, I agree her playing is emotionally reserved, but this piece also goes under the title of 'Nocturne', so maybe it's not too bad that she hasn't made it so lush.
If you prefer, you might want to enjoy the full richness of Gaelle Solal's excellent performance.
By comparison, Ioana's playing here has a more subtle, delicate flavour to it. Like Jasmine tea, that is something I never get tired of.

Okay, she is blind. So what! read my scale. She mastered the piece and masters the guitar but her delivery is unmoving and unemotional. It is too square and monotone. It lacks interpretation. Yes, she is capable and hits all the notes and is in rythm but not in soul. I have no prejudice for the handicap and I dont give them extra points just because they are blind. And as for you ability to play, why do you even compare yourself with her?

I'm not making any kind of judgement with the following observation, but what immediately strikes me is that the interpretation is *identical* to David Russell's famous recording on "David Russell plays 19th C Music". You can pretty much play this video along to the CD; I'd be interested to know how other people feel about that.
Shades of Villa-Lobos around 1:50. Wouldn't it be great if she posted something from VL on YouTube. I'd bet London to a brick it would sound delightfully different to the usual renditions our jaded eardrums have become accustomed to. Especially if she chose something from the Suite Populaire Brasilenne.
what problems do you have with typical interpretations of that suite? I find among the recordings of those pieces a very wide range of interpretative approaches, from Julian Bream's flamboyant, hit-or-miss expressiveness to Barrueco's extreme reserve, to Kraft's... attempts. I agree, it would be great to hear her play some of that stuff, though.
VTguitar88 - I was really referring to the general repertoire of Villa-Lobos, esp. the Preludes and, say, Choros no.1. It's just that works from the SPB were personal favourites from my playing days, the introspective nature of Valse- and Gavotte-Choro making them, I feel, most compatible with Ioana's personality. Intrigued as to how she'd arpeggiate these pieces (how she 'weights' the arpeggios in the home stretch to the Prelude Bach BWV 997 is to die for). And she would 'own' VL Prelude no. 5!
I keep asking myself why I enjoy listening so much to Ioana's playing. One reason: she doesn't need to rush any notes or phrases (like many other players do) in order to "make a point". Every note she plays is treated just as importantly as any other, and she does this WITHOUT sacrificing musicality. This helps to make Ioana more than just a guitarist - she is an Artist.
This is a musical score you goose. It is not a porno site. This girl is a wonderful musician and from her music she demonstrates a beauty that few can match. But you, we all know that you are ugly!
cirusflex - In this video, Ioana's hair is a little out of place, and therefore doesn't show her at her best. You might want to check out her other videos, to reconsider. In my opinion, she is, without doubt, beautiful.
I am super inspired by the beautiful and amazing young lady. Oh so wonderful, wonderful is the human spirit.

This helps to make Ioana more than just a guitarist - she is an Artist.

cirusflex - In this video, Ioana's hair is a little out of place, and therefore doesn't show her at her best. You might want to check out her other videos, to reconsider. In my opinion, she is, without doubt, beautiful.
