Families have moved to the suburbs & kids go to schools there.

In Kansas City itself -- the Inner City -- there used to be 75,000 children & now there are 15,000 -- so many of the school rooms are vacant.

It makes sense to consolidate - but some parents protest cause they want a school nearby & some teacher protest for fear of losing their jobs.

If there were not enough students to make it economical to sustain those schools (some were at 40% capacity) then closing them is smart and financially responsible. Its not like the kids cant still go to school. You take 2-4 partially filled schools and from those areas find a middle ground existing school and consolidate them into one combined new one. The will be staff losses and teacer cuts but the kids can still get an education which is what school is supposed to be about anyway.

That said the higher echelon city leaders should also consider taking salary cuts until things get better. This will show a sign that all levels of city govt are aware of the dire situation they are in and if they want to be reelected that might better their chances by taking one for the team.

I agree that we should "educate" children, but I don't think that's what's happening at most schools these days. Requiring that a child learn to regurgitate arbitrarily chosen facts does not equate to education. Such techniques are indicative of indoctrination. Based on the comments so far here, I think the public school system is working perfectly towards that end, and therefore should be shut down immediately.

You see, these schools more than likely were underperforming. What's a use of a school if it doesn't do what it was established to do? The Teacher's Union is against parents choosing schools, it doesn't keep the teachers on payroll, not so much about kids staying in class. However, no students = no money, so they all lose out, but the children (where at all possible) are left with an option.

Option to get into a better school, not keep a bad one open.
