It's alright. I prefer music with real instruments, and being in a band myself, I tend to be that way. Honestly I wouldn't really call this experimental. Buckethead is experimental and he takes it to some weird extremes.
People will often slap the label "experimental" on anything, but I take a stricter look at it. For example, with movies, it has to be something where the basics of movies are gone - for example, a film with no narrative, or no actors (which I've done both.)
@Bassbait I prefer real instruments too. Just did this stuff as a passing hobby. There are some elements in here I hardly hear in other music such as the tempo suddenly speeding up for about 2 seconds at one point and I think it changes flow a lot more than most music.
Buckethead is pretty bizarre. Got a few of his albums, but I got bored of the guitar solo back in the '80's so I skip those parts. These days I'm into samples and electronica because there's so much can be done with it.
@robag88 Well first off, there are bands I know that do have sudden change in tempo. The song "Noisy Pink Bubbles" does it for a very short time, that song is by Devin Townsend.
Buckethead is interesting because he has robotic guitar solos, emotional guitar solos, and then he also has an entire electronica album, multiple dark ambient albums. He's got huge range, just as Devin Townsend does. That's why I love those guys. Also, being a guitarist and singer, I look up to both of them.
@Bassbait I think you're mistaking "experimental" for "original". I've got thousands of Cds and a lot of structural stuff I was playing with in this song isn't present in the vast majority of music I've heard (or at least only happens rarely). For me it was experimental. Whether townsend had done something similar outside of electronica at some other point doesn't mean this piece isn't experimental :)
@robag88 Well I just consider experimental on a grander scale. So that's where there's a difference. I consider something experimental when it plays with the form of music conventions, whether that be Naked City for combining jazz with Grindcore or Buckethead for combining shred guitar with electronica, there are plenty of bands that don't fall under specific genres, and those are the bands that I consider experimental. So it's really just a viewpoint.
@Bassbait It's a viewpoint I largely agree with and I honestly can't see what standard genre you'd fit this track into. There are def drum n bass elements, though the bass lines are too varied to really fit that genre and it doesn't use any standard loops used in a lot of d&b. There are trip hop and ambient elements too and someone on here mentioned the drums to be heavy metallish. A couple of people have mentioned Aphex Twin similarities, but then his stuff doesn't fit a single genre either.
@robag88 Ya, I see that. But there's a lot of genres out there. Sometimes being experimental can still be part of a genre, but just the way you handle it. The band "Vektor" has vocals completely unheard in music. As in, he's completely alone in the way he sounds, no one sounds like him. But the music is a combination of Thrash Metal, Black Metal, and Prog. Their song "Black Future", at about the 2:30 mark, has a vocal style that is so ear piercing and without any digital effects, it's incredible
@Bassbait From our chats on the forum I know you're a big metal fan. I listen to a lot of metal too, though I get the impression you're not into electonica. I think the genres we're not into seem the most bland to us. For instance I hear most one man and his acoustic guitar stuff as sounding the same, but I've got friends who think all heavy metal is just noise. I actually dislike music genres as a concept. Then again I've heard extremely original artists who're unlistenable lol
@robag88 Well as I said earlier, I'm into real instruments. I prefer this stuff over a lot of electronica, but if Igorrr were to count as electronica, I'd put them higher. Devin Townsend has electronic influences as does Buckethead, but I don't consider them electronica. Electronica isn't really bland to me, it's just not appropriate as listening music. I think of it as a backdrop to a video game or movie, not something that could be put onto albums. They seem to lack context on their own.
@robag88 No, but it prompted me to finally ask it. I know most electronica composers are into drugs, but that's still no guarantee regarding each individual -- I honestly just wanted to know out of curiosity, which is why I asked you. I apologize if I've offended you.
Hey Rob im on my way to sending you my work, but im too greatly suppressed by my own self-criticism about personal art and vision that im sabotaging myself, i hope to sacrifice the sacred goat soon and be able to unleash my stuff for you.
@fliegeroh I think the latest version for PC was music 2002. I've got a copy which I still use, but I'm not even sure it's on sale any more. Maybe the odd copy will be show up on ebay. I loved the ease of use, it allowed me to try new ideas quickly.
@666deadman1988 One of the problems with it was that the instruction manual only covered the basics. There was scope to do a lot more with a little experimentation.
@thumminxy Do you mean the soundtracks of his films or the music composed for his films? Actually it doesn't make mnuch difference. I like both. Lost Highway was a really good soundtrack / score.
Sweet this song made ten years ago sound more futuristic then most of the Ambient music created by Futurecop and Tesla Boy and Miami nights 1984.
