@Rolmarsden - Kool DJ Herc, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Ruben Blades, Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey, Lou Reed, Run DMC, Peter Gabriel, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Darlene Love, Bobby Womack, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Jackson Browne and Darryl Hannah, Peter Wolf, U2, George Clinton, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bonnie Raitt, Hall & Oates, Jimmy Cliff, Stiv Bators, Peter Garrett, Gil-Scott Heron, Nona Hendryx, Pat Benatar, and Joey Ramone. Ring any bells?
Apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into racial groups and residential areas were segregated by means of forced removals. From 1958, Blacks were deprived of their citizenship. The government segregated education, medical care, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of whites. Please read a book Hermangu & TheEmptyEmpire...
Apartheid means sepertate development. Black people were given land to developed but it never developed so they got jealous of white people that developed their part of the land. So they wanted to end apartheid because they couldn't developed on their own.
Daryl Hall DID play at Sun City years earlier...after he was "lied to" by South African authorities who told him that Bophuthatswana was a sovereign nation within South Africa's borders like Lesotho is. That's one of the reasons he participated in this project.
If the Africans were smart enough to run their own country without massive outbreaks of AIDS and rampant violence there wouldn't be need for Apartheid
I love this song... But I want more Joey Ramone!:D... R.I.P. ...

@rabb046 - yeah, got about four of those (inc Peter Garrett - without hair even then).
It'd be great to have a version with their names showing!

I'm waiting for them to do a song against Castro's apartheid in Cuba, but I'm not holding my breath for that to happen anytime soon.

Compilations with individual songs are alright (IE , Save Darfur, Warchild, Very Special Christmas), but this sort of thing is so much more powerful

Is that Missy Elliott at 1:15?
keliata 1 year ago
@keliata Missy Elliot is nowhere to be found in this video being that it was filmed and released in 1985.
