I wonder who could nt hv ruled those countries "successfully", seeing dt they are organized: Do u know how many races, ethnic & party groups there are in those countries, yet they moved on? As defacto Vice to Gowon, Chief Awolowo's failure to instigate grandstandings d type he did in d West baffles imagination. He learned nothing 4rm d "Carpet-crossing" in the then W/Region Leg/Election & his 20 pounds advice was a script. Forget d Russians! One must love a ppl 2 affect them. Love 1st!
@igbos27 You are quite correct. Awo is simply one of the greatest across the board. However his inability to capture the imagination of the others is certainly to be regretted. Perhaps it is more of a reflection of the severe undereducation of the Nigeria of the period or simply peronal failings -we will never know. But I suspect that Nigeria will not have been hurt if men like him had executive power over the whole territory. Things will certainly have been different -a bit at least.
Awolowo was a product of his time. He served his country during turbulent times when ethnocetricity was rife and sectional self interests were the order of the day. Ojukwu definitely wanted to break away and there is nothing anyone else could have done about that.
In hindsight though, I really wished the Western Region took advantage of the initial Biafran chaos to declare their own indepenhdence from the clutches of Northern domination. We missed a good window of opportunity.
Afenifere for life. Awolowo, a great man indeed and a blessing to the Yoruba race, and Nigeria. Born 1909, a century apart from America's Abraham Lincoln, born in 1809. Both men Rosicrucians.
Afenifere reunites - Enough is Enough, says HID - Meetings to now hold in Ikenne - From Jackson Udom, Sam Nwaoko and Wale Ajayi
Friday, February 13, 2009 DECADES after the cold war that almost tore the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, apart, the group on Thursday came together to bury the hatchet.
Governor Gbenga Daniel, who also spoke at the meeting, said the meeting was a turning point, charging members to go out and win new converts. He also described the meeting as a remarkable success and a positive step and commended Chief (Mrs) Awolowo for convening it.
"Let us also agree that there is only one Afenifere. All the bad things that befell the Yoruba race happened when one of its sons was the president. Our voice is no longer heard not to talk of being respected in national circles because of the seed of disunity that had been planted among us. All Afenifere members, must be prepared to embrace the four cardinal programmes of Baba Awolowo.
That henceforth, all meetings of the Afenifere will now be held in Ikenne, at Papa Obafemi Awolowos house, being the source and Mecca of Awoism. That all of us agreed to work together and to ensure that we keep the flame of Afenifere moving on. We agreed that no matter the political affiliation, all of us shall come to Afenifere.
A truly incredible man..and it gets on my nerves when i see people say things just because they believe in tribalism such as he did nothing1...The foundations of what he did is still being enjoyed today..free education..1st tv station in africa..tallest building in africa as of then..free health, employment, thriving economy and industry..an so on..truly remarkable..at his death the Russinas said Awo could have ruled Russia,Great Britain& USA succesfully..I REST MY CASE
Well said toksgirl. Chief Awolowo ought to be celebrated as a national treasure for all of his sacrifices to the Yoruba nation and indeed the whole of Nigeria. Our parents and our generation rode on the back of his social and educational programs that had produced the best minds in Nigeria. Even those who hated him benefited from his programs. may his soul rest in peace.
I WISHED THAT EACH OF THESE CORRUPT NIGERIAN POLITICIANS HAD ONE DROP OF AWOLOWO'S BLOOD IN THEIR GREEDY BODIES. NIGERIA WOULD HAVE BEEN A PARADISE ON THIS PLANET. JERRY RAWLINGS OF NIGERIA SHALL RISE REAL SOON. SO SAYS THE PROPHESY.
MAY AWO'S SOUL CONTINUE TO REST IN PEACE FOR THE FOUNDATION HE LAID IN THE 60'S IS WHAT WE CAN STILL POINT AT AS ACHIEVEMENTS IN TODAYS NIGERIA. SO MUCH TO SAY TO THESE POLITICIANS.
NO AMOUNT OF WORDS HURT THEM. THEIR ATTITUDE IS We are THIEVES, SOOO WHAT?
"... I have always fought for what I believe in without fear, and I say this without any spirit of immodesty that in the course of my political career, I have rendered services to this country which historians and the coming generations will regard as imperishable... " - Chief Obafemi Awolowo
Very true, Odunation. He indeed contributed to our nation. It is noteworthy that in 2008, we can't point to any politician that could rival him in his service to his country. His contemporaries could not could not even make such claim. May his soul rest in peace.
Ojoge Daniel was also a pioneer of his time. May his soul rest in peace, too.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'grandstanding', but you're right: Love 1st.
Chief Obafemi Awolowo indeed loved his people and Nigeria in general. Perhaps you're one of his free-education beneficiary like most elite igbos are.

Happy 100 years b'day Papa Awolowo.
A man never to be forgotten in the minds of well-meaning Nigerians, just as Lincoln keeps resurfacing in the American contemporary world.
