  • nice

  • that's what i call soul music. sounds like the trees, the river polishing the rocks, the deep dark soil

  • You think he can read music?

  • i feel like the guitar player needs to open his eyes a little more

  • @bassmansta doc is so good he doesn't need to open his eyes.... that and it wouldn't do him much good, he's blind.

  • He was referring to Gaither Carlton. I believe he may be related to him.

  • By 'Gaither', is he possibly referring to Bill Gaither?

    Great music, by the way.

  • There is something astrally beautiful about the mix of clawhammer banjo and a great guitar player.

  • Grandioso.

  • I know people comment about the dislikes to much but seriously, If you don't like this music you don't know what real music is an you never will.

  • There is no one in the world like Doc. How could someone not like this video? I use to do this for my classes to sing.

  • Perfect :)

  • Doc Watson is a force of nature.

  • What a beautiful voice he has! So natural and unpretentious.

  • Really Neat

  • Most badass blind dude ever picked a lick!

  • Wow this is great !

  • Best version I have ever heard!!

  • lol

  • I listen to mostly melodic speed metal and i still think that you cant get any more hard core than Doc.

  • The Greatest DOC WATSON!

  • I saw Doc last night... his guitar playing is pretty much gone except for short bursts of brilliance, but his soul is still very much in the music and his voice is still really nice.

He played this. It was my favorite.

  • yeah this song is amazing and very addicting

  • Beautiful.

  • Love this song. I can't stop listen to it !

  • I saw Doc and David at the Newberry Opera House, front row tickets. They are both amazing. Doc is as strong as ever. I met David and he is a very nice, down to earth person. He and Doc signed my hat. I feel I was very blessed to see them. They are great! If they come within a days ride, go and see them.

  • Post more Doc!!

  • Wish I had a big fine horse...

  • If nothing but Doc's music played on my stereo I would be happy.

  • Doc is going on strong.... Since he lost Merle I don't know how he kept going, but he just does.....!

  • it's impossible to trace all those old folk songs, but from what I understand Matty Groves is an old English tune with variants including Little Musgrave, which dates way back to the 1700s. Then Shady grove sort of evolved out of that and became it's own song entirely in America. But way back when none of these were written down the lyrics and melodies would always get changed and passed on over time. Either way this is a great version

  • It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

  • Ahhhhh

Like a drink of water on a hot day

  • great

  • Sick and/or stupid.

  • Feel good tune! I like this pacing too.

  • Brilliant!

  • I love this song! I prefer it sung much more slowly though..My dad and uncle used to sing this song when I was little. It was my favorite..Still is...Thanks for posting it..

    LAX3!

  • America the Beautiful!

  • Actually this is an old English ballad from the 17th century, called Matty Groves, but re made in America into a less gruesome version. Check out the original.

  • No, I believe the American version of Matty Groves is called "Matty Groves" and Doc Watson also does that one. Great version too.

  • Matty Groves is the American variant of Little Musgrave. I think the only relation to Shady Grove is that Matty Groves borrowed the tune.

  • I'm pretty positive Matty Groves is not an American song to begin with. and that Shady Grove borrowed the melody from Matty Groves, not the other way around. But all the old folk songs back then were borrowing and changing and getting passed on all the time. (and Matty Groves can be traced to as early as the 17th century)... either way, they are all great tunes - I love this melody.

  • oops, thought i deleted the first comment before posting it... guess not.

  • No tune survives for the Little Musgrave and the earliest versions don't scan to Shady Grove, so I don't see why it didn't borrow the tune. As I had already mentioned, Matty Groves is the American VARIANT.

  • Really enjoyed this! Thanks for making it available!

  • Great performance.
