For everyone who is confused on the bands genre, they're post punk with an old school hardcore influence. Notice how the instrumental side is comparable to that of Joy Division (Post-punk 1976-1980) and the vocals are raspy and aggressive and highly comparable to hardcore punk. If hipsters want to listen to this and label it "indie" (which is supposed to mean indepent from a record label, not some stupid sound) then fine, at least it is a band we punks can compromise on with you guys.
As a punk rock fan. Its not pure punk rock, nor is it indie/hip. Its a blend of both. My hipster friend showed me it. Its good background music. I can see its appeal to the indie kids and some punks. Cool idea on the band's part.
I heard this on MTV today i dont usually watch mtv cuz i hate the music they play but im happy i watched it today or else i wouldnt know about this fucken dope band! :D this is some trippy shit!
in reference to those slandering the scream vocals on this track, they are tasteful and appropriate to the type of song the writers would like to convey. i'm a new listener to this band but the vocalist has shown integrity to the inner turmoil expressed in the song itself, and for that we should all be grateful. also, hail satan and smoke trees every day.
@dontcareyourestupid I felt the exact same when I first listened to Chemistry of Modern Life. The screaming has definitely grown on me and I hope it does for you as well. Fucked Up is so incredible when you get into it.
I think that the combination of the different vocal styles is really enjoyable. I listen to like no Punk rock and am a hardcore indie fag, but this shit is good. haha
I wouldn't mind the vocals if this was actual hardcore, but face it, they've strayed way too far from the genre to still be considered a part of it. I mean, I like this song and his voice doesn't bother me THAT much, but I'm having a hard time trying to listen to the whole album because the fact that he's screaming all the time makes every song sound the same.
They don't consider themselves as a part of the genre anymore. You should watch the video that goes along with this album (watch?v=3dYWof3QZbQ&feature=related).
I don't get all the complaints about the vocals. Besides them not really being that extreme, it's a fucking punk rock band, what did you expect, Arcade Fire? Wish Pitchfork would just stick to reviewing shitty indie bands.
Look.. maybe I don't get modern advertising, but I don't think that an ad for a diamond ring fits this video. Just saying hire me for your marketing. Also the irony of posting this for this song is funny!!!!!!!1111111111
I think this song would be much more successful if they changed the vocals... I feel like his gravelly, Foo Fighters-ish gravelly voice doesn't suit their sweet guitars and melodic accompaniment? Just an opinion...
I have to disagree personally. I think his vocal style gives the otherwise calming music a nice edge. I think it sounds great and its a pretty creative and unexpected combo, although I understand that a lot of people don't really like the sound of screaming vocals. But hey, who says they even want to appeal to a large audience.
@christietotheanna They're a hardcore/punk band... of course there's screaming. Their sound has changed a lot over the years, but they're still a hardcore/punk act. That has always been and will likely always be an integral part of the bands sound.
It's like someone combined a mediocre punk frontman with los campesinos. Theyre about as hardcore as blink 182. God you people will love anything pitchfork tells you is cool.
This album is masterpiece, with all due respect to Husker Du-Zen Arcade but this is the best concept hard rock album i ever heard. Sure i don't considering albums like The Wall as hard rock.
So are these guys like a screamo revival band or something? I mean, real screamo hasn't been around for like a decade, if not longer. It would make chronological sense that "post screamo" begins now, right?
@studiohry Thats a load of shit. You can try to like music. You find all the good points in it and weigh it up against the bad points. Then you keep trying to search for good points. Therefore you can try to like music. And don't call people idiots because they believe in something you don't. Idiot.
@cocksuckermichael he's the nicest guy alive and if you punched him he'd give you a deep talk on the importance of peace, give you a big hug and then you would go dedicate your life to peaceful activism.
So you're saying you base whether you actually like a track or not on who it's by? I heard this really sweet tune the other day, but then I checked and it turned out it was by R.E.M. and seeing as everybody knows who they are and loads of people like them I decided I hated it.
