  • R.I.P. Dave Waymer

  • Bum also shouldn't have drafted Dave Wilson in the first round of the 81 Supplemental Draft. That was the Dave Brown pick of the 80's.

  • It was not easy for Bum Phillips and the Saints to compete in a division with the 49ers and Rams. But Bum gambled that Richard Todd would break out of his mental slumber, and kept him around a year too long, the way he did with Ken Stabler. In early 1980s, Archie Manning was a better quarterback than either what Stabler had become, or what Todd always was. 1st-round pick should not have been given up for Earl Campbell, who had lost his speed and 4th gear, and dragged his right leg around.

  • While Bruce Clark and Rickey Jackson contributed to the Saints having the NFL's best pass defense in 1984, their rush defense ranked third from the bottom. #74 nose tackle Derland Moore missed 13 games that season and it cost them. Moore was a true scrapper and exceptionally quick for a nose, and his experience and gamesmanship were never replaced.

  • In 1984, Richard Todd's 60.6 rating was worst among NFC quarterbacks. He was intercepted 19 times that year and 45 times from 1983-84 and never thought on his feet, making many crucial mistakes, and was always in a mental slumber. Dave Wilson was not a self-starter and always needed encouragement. Both had big-league arms but nothing else.

  • Bruce Clark was a smart, disciplined player who did a good job of stacking up the run. in 1984, Clark developed a good outside charge and a clever inside duck under to give opposing blockers fits. His angles of pursuit showed improvement as he made more tackles away from the pile. He was strong, explosive, stayed on his feet, and had a quick change of direction.

  • Rickey Jackson was the Lawrence Taylor of the south. He was a big-play blitzer and tireless pursuer with the strength and size (6-2, 240) to handle a blocking back. He played with alot of pride and confidence, and the bigger the game the better he performed. His quickness, strength, and all-out effort made him extremely difficult to block on a blitz and against the run he made tackles all over the field.

  • damn i love me some Bum Phillips.....great man.
