Do you avoid peels on fruit and vegetables? I read on a site from a man with div that the skins are hard to digest on things like bell peppers and apples when raw. Guess what I eat both by the tons or use to. Ate some and paid dearly. Have found out I can eat strawberries Yipeeeeeee
Yeah, during flare ups, liquids is the only option. One, you are sick and lose your apetite (or at least I did with fever and chills). Two, giving your intestine a chance to rest and clear out the infection. Adding any food at that point is a bad idea. Nothing solid really. Just liquids. Someone might say, "Hey, eat more FIBER!" WRONG! lol
Fiber is for people that are already healthy. Those of us with div, we have pockets (div). And too much anything will irritate the pockets.
Not sure how sever your div is. But I would eat anything that is soft. Try to go easy on lettuce and test it out and use it as a way to clear your other foods. If you can eat it, then keep doing it, but keep tabs on how leafy foods affect your other food combinations.
Things that are hard could get stuck (apples/bell pepers). So, just keep that in mind. I had my surgery 8 months ago, and I'm 90% better. But I still try and give my intestines a rest; smoothies for snacks.
I actually started to try and visualize what I was eating going thru my intestines. Lettuce could be a sweeper that is soft enough to clean you out the other foods (fish/chicken). But raw apples and bell pepers might be like little bricks moving through your intestines.
All three of them: raw veggies. But one of them is soft enough (leafy sweeper), but the others are hard bricks. lol Like rocks! Ouch! Even if apple/bells don't get stuck. they still move over the infected area. ow
By the way, when I said "wrong" lol on the fiber part. I meant when people just suggest a blanket statement solution. They just say, "Eat more fiber" as if any type is ok for us. Div people can't do that. They have to be selective in their fiber or else we'll get sick again. That's why some lettuce might be ok for you.
Also, you must try and exercise you abdomen area. Not to lose weight but just to keep your stomach/intestines moving. Think of it as massaging and strengthening that area. I avoided moving my sids/stomach because I though I was going to hurt it. But you isides are tougher than you think. Of course, if you have a flare up, then no. But when you feel good, exercise that area as much as possible. Even if it's only laying on the floor doing small leg lifts while watching tv. Something.
When you system is sick, any food is bad for it. But the veggies broken down into a shake form is better than straight raw foods. At this point it's only a matter of what pieces of the food would get stuck in a diverticuli pouch. Larger and medium pieces? Or liquified particles that have already been broken down for digestion. Eating a cooked piece of meat/chicken/fish (fully formed) is worse if you in a flare up.
Just diagnosed with Div and was told by Dr. eat anything and everything the old info is bunk. A few people that have this have said this is not true for them. I am still learning what to eat from trial and error. Just had a flare up (2nd one in 6 weeks) and now I know it was from the raw bell peppers I ate. Didn't know raw food was a problem. Does this mean no more cucumbers and tomatoes? I have eaten lettuce w/o a problem. Thanks for any info you share.
Ask you self this. If you have Diverticulitis, what happens during a flare up? Food is stuck in the tiny pouches and gets infected. Now, any food, cooked, raw or otherwise will get stuck. And when it sits there for days, it gets rancid and infected. It really doesn't matter what you eat at that point. Any food is a bad idea at that point.
The reason that it's different for other people is because of the degree of infection/pouches they have...
I had to learn for myself to only do liquids when a flare up occurs as my dr or an associate never instructed me either time I was in the office with a flare up. Both just said it everything until you can't eat something. Umm no thanks I prefer to forego some intense pain and doing further damage. I would say it is reasonable that after a certian age foods that look the same coming out as going in(apology for being crude)just might be a problem. I dream about corn now...lol
...one person may eat lettuce and tomatoes just fine. But when they have a flare up, do you think eating anything is a good idea?" it's not. I went on a fast one year because I was so bad that I couldn't eat anything. I still got stick once a month because the intestine sheds normally and that would get stuck in my diverticuli. The reason that veggies (raw or not) are good is because they are roughage that clears up the intestine. But it applies more for already healthy people.

I would love to talk to your Dr. Because I had suffered from Diverticlitus for 6 years before I had surgery. And if I new what I know now back then I could have prevented (this is key) my condition in the first place. But once you go too far into infection states, it's really the path of no return and diets that normally would be good for you do more harm than good.

@agerolimatos Eating any food during a flare up is the worst thing you can do.

@TheJas3982 Which doctor should have their license taken away? The one that was being skeptical about raw foods?
