Big Beautiful Bear-Dog. That's what the Natives called Lewis & Clark's Newfoundland. My sympathy for your loss. We have a Newfie about that size who is 10 years old. I can't imagine not having one. Some people say that Newfs remind them of Saint Bernards, but really, I think they are really similar in behavior to retrievers. It's just a retriever with some molosser in it.

Newfs love the water. They can be taught to retrieve from the water, including humans. Napoleon was saved by a Newfoundland. What gets confusing is that in historical documents he Newfoundland dog can describe this dog or the ancestor of the Labrador, which also plays a role in the development of the other retrievers.

Newfs most definately do remind of St. Bernard, as after the original St. Bernhard breed was extinct, they brought Newfies among other large breeds to breed a new dog by the same name. Very old historical documents show that the original St. Bernhard wasnt' the heavy build, gigantic dog as we nowdays stereotype the breed. Newfies are also ancestors of Leonbergs, among others.

What's interesting is that Newfoundland dogs didn't always look like that. Originally, most were black and white (Landseers) and were smaller and more lightly built.
